Turbo Twist 2 Disappeared!
« on: February 22, 2008, 09:06:05 am »
Hi guys,

I just moved to a new house a reassembled my cabinet and now I'm having trouble getting my spinner to be recognized. Before the move, it was being recognized (in MAME) as 'Mouse 2' and my trackball as 'Mouse 3'. The trackball is a Happs 3" with USB interface and the spinner is a Turbo Twist 2 (also USB). These two devices as well as the USB interface for the iPac4 are all plugged into a powered 4-port USB hub which is in turn plugged into one of the USB ports on my PC.

Now, the trackball is still 'Mouse 3' but the analog entry for the spinner in MAME is 'None' and trying to change it (by pressing Enter and spinning the spinner) has no effect.

Oddly enough, when I unplugged the spinner's USB cable from the hug, rebooted the PC, plugged the USB cable back in and then went into MAME to set the control, it was recognized as 'Mouse 5'. I played a couple games of Tempest and shut it down for the night. Unfortunately, when I powered it back on last night, the spinner had disappeared from MAME again.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?  Any help is always appreciated.

If you didn't make sure to note which devices you plugged into which ports, it's possible that you mixed them up when plugging them back in.  I believe this causes them to be enumerated differently, so that is the first thing I would check.

I can confirm this different USB ports causes them to be enumerated differently.  A bit of a hassle when you have 3 trackballs.

Try plugging the TT2 into the computer without the HUB.  That is the only way I could get my laptop to see the TT2.  The trackball and the 2 GPWIZ go into the HUB.  I do not have any problems.  It may be that I am using an unpowered HUB and it could not suport the TT2 trackball and 2 GPWIZs at the same time.  When I get the game machine set up I plan to plug all of them into the computer and not use a HUB at all.
Careful what you wish for you may get it!!

Hi guys,

I just moved ... are all plugged into a powered 4-port USB hub which is in turn plugged into one of the USB ports on my PC....

Besides the different port as noted in prior posts, check that the hub power supply isn't broken or disconnected.

Also, after the reboot, was the TT2 back to mouse 2, or did it not even work in windows?

With the new port resulting in new numbers, you might want to clean the USB drivers, too.  My work compu, err, the computer I'm on at the moment has had 4 or maybe 5 mice plugged in since I got it (plus the keyboard), and it has 37 "USB Human Interface Device"s (35 hidden) in the Device Manager ATM.  (Wow, I didn't expect that many, and I'm ignoring the 12 "HID-complliant device", 8 "HID-compliant consumer control device", and 2 "HID Non-User Input Data Filter"!!!)

Now I'm curious.  Hmm, here's the break down:

10: Dell USB Keyboard (one active)
10: USB Receiver
8: USB Device (in two groups, 6 & 2)
4: MS Wireless Optical Mouse (one active)
1: Dell USB Mouse
1: USB & PS/2 Mouse
1: Optical USB Mouse
1: SpaceNavigator
1: (blank)

10 for my Keyboard!?!  I thought it might have switched ports once.  OTOH, unless it's hidden in one of the generic ones, I must have cleaned this at least once, as it's missing the logitech mouse I had for a while.

And just for fun, I plugged in the office's spare mouse (Dell USB Mouse) into the port I had plugged in in before; no new "USB Human Interface Device".  But when I plugged it in a different USB port, a 38th one appeared.  (Time for me to clean.)

The reason it has disappeared is because the Hamburgler took it!

Muhahaha!

That's just a plastic knob glued to your panel!

I knew it! That red-headed freak is going to pay!   :)

Seriously, though, I was able to fix the problem by moving the spinner's USB cable directly to a USB port on the motherboard, as mentioned by Stan, above.

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts.  Now, back to Tempest...

Not sure if this is the same problem I'm having...

I'm trying to use a TT2 on a laptop via USB.  When I plug it in, directly to the laptop, windows recognizes it and says it's ready to use.  But, when I go into the MAME setup (per game) and try to spin the TT2 at "Dial Analog" it does nothing.

The only other USB I have plugged in is an IPAC4.  Is there some global setting that I'm missing, either in Windows or MAME?

BTW, I tested this on another laptop and it worked fine.

Any help will be greatly appreciated....we're about to be snowed in for the weekend!

If it controls the cursor at the Windows desktop, then all is well.  You probably just need to enable mouse control on the MAME installation on that machine, or set the game to use the proper MOUSE control.  If you have other pointing devices on that laptop, you'll need to figure out how they are enumerated and setup MAME to use the one you want (the TT2).

Make sure that you have the following entry in your mame.ini file:

Mouse 1

Assuming you have a mame.ini file.

Thanks Randy and Hoopz!  That's what it was.  I did not have an .ini file on that PC so I created one through a command prompt, then edited it to be "Mouse 1" and all was good.
