Geometry Wars on my Arcade w/o Steam.
« on: January 27, 2008, 08:00:36 pm »
Hi,

I recently installed Geometry Wars on my PC (not my arcade) and I love it (I had played it on Xbox Live before and loved it as well).  It was only $3.95, but there was one catch... you must use it through the Steam Client by Valve software.

I would like to run this game on my arcade, but I have a few issues:

A)  I don't want to install the Steam software if possible, just the game.  (I tried this and I could not find a way.  Finally I gave up and installed the "no frills" version of the Steam client software from www.steampowered.com )
and then I installed the Geometry Wars from there.

B)  How do I get the game to run by itself without steam loading?  I am linking to it in my front End using a batch file, however, it ALWAYS opens up Steam first.  Then it looks for an internet connection, fails and then you have to click a box that says "play offline" in order for it to finally load the game.

Anyone know if there is a command line that I'm missing to load the game without any dialog boxes popping up or anything?

Also, I know there are plenty of clones out there for Geometry Wars (Grid Wars being one of them), but I DO NOT want to run a clone.  So please, don't suggest that I do.  I am only asking for help on how to run the original.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think there's any legal solutions to your issue. Pretty sure the standard version requires Steam.

Yeah, I figured as much.  I did manage to get it to only require one click by finding the executable for Geometry wars in the apps directory in Steam.  It's called "testgw.exe" or something similar (I'm not in front of my computer right now).  For every wall there's always a higher ladder.  I'll have to keep playing with it.

Thanks!

Hi. Would you not consider Gridwars which is a Geometry Wars clone ? It's pretty good.

 :)

I am having problems running Grid Wars due to the resolution.  I am using a Betson arcade monitor with a NORMAL Nvidia card (not the arcadevga2 card).  So Grid Wars won't work.  Although it runs great on a normal PC.  :-)

I have it running on a WG D9200 at 640x480 using an arcadevga card (not the version 2). Are you sure you have the game set up correctly ? I had to fiddle around with the display settings of the game.

I'm fooling mine into working using Powerstrip.  I am using an onboard NVIDIA chipset for now until I can save up for an Arcade VGA card.

No worries, I someone linked me to a hacked version that works like a champ!  I'd rather use the real deal since, I did after all, pay for it.

Thanks!

Gridwars is a very good clone, until he was forced to pull it out, but the whole source code (Gridwars was wrote in BlitzMax) was included. It should been able to run in 640x480 in 60hz.

Otherwice there is no legal way to avoid steam and I wont eventully find a crack or such, since this type of topic is not allowered in this forum.

Arcade VGA is a pretty good card to avoid resoulutions problems, or using the soft 15khz that might work.
Decade Old Work: MultiFE, ArcadeMusicBox
Today Works: Various Spectrum Next games from Rusty Pixels and html5 games.

I tried soft 15khz which did not work with my video card setup :-(.  But I did manage to get it to work with Powerstrip and some .ini file tweaking.  But certain apps are picky and won't run.  GridWars is one of them and I also couldn't get Nestopia to run properly on the monitor either.  In full screen mode the monitor would lose the signal - it was out of range.  No biggie, as I plan to purchase an Arcade VGA card in the future to correct these problems.
