working, selling, sold, moved, not working...please help!?
« on: January 19, 2008, 10:05:19 pm »
hey all, im moving and sold two working cabs today to a neighbor 5 houses down. i had the machines on all day during a moving sale and been played alot. after he bought'em moved them to his house he came back and the monitors wont fire up?? the game sounds and plays fine just no picture.
-any ideas what to do? i feel bad but certainly dont want to return the money as they were working when i sold them.
is this common and does anyone think they'll fire up later, its seems too odd that both of them didnt work just 1 hour after i sold them?? thanks in advance

It's common for stuff to be screwed after a move.

Crack them open, check all the connections first: power and video.  Just do a once-over.  I'm sure something is just loose.

If not, we'll deal with that after.

Well, the answer depends on how soon and how far away you are moving. Then you could just not answer your door and move in the middle of the night. >:D

I'd check the circuit he put them on, too... if they BOTH blew out, there's a chance his basement/garage circuit is crap and he popped fuses.

QFT

Money and friends/family rarely mixes well.  When I'm buying from a friend I just assume that anything that happens after driving away with the game is all on me - I had every chance to inspect the game, and if I didn't, I took the risk.

I solve that problem by not having any friends with the same interests as I do.

I suggest you walk down the street and ask them.  It's your ethics, of course, but that is what I would do if I sold them as working games.

If you didn't see him move them, then you have no idea what he did to them that would cause this. For all you know, he could have ripped the power cords out of the power brick during the move.
I too, would recommend that you at least go down and offer to inspect his setup. He might be a total tard ass (which I am assuming since both don't fire up). Definitely don't go out of your way to do too much. An hour of your time (including BS chit chat time) is more than fair.

Out of curiousity, what were the games and how much did he pay?  There's a difference in obligation if you got full market value vs if you got $100 for the pair at the end of the afternoon.

ok, i'll tell...90' double axle(dynamo cab) and samarai showdown IV(in a williams cab).  some older game/cabs that i can live without.  i got 300 each for them. it was my asking price, i expected to deal down from that price naturally but they didnt even question it.
-so what do you think,, think im obligated or fair deal?

Agreed.  You got a pretty good price for those games.  Make sure they work before you leave unless he did something stupid after taking them.

take your multimeter and check the input voltages at the monitor, perhaps it could be something as simple as a broken door switch

If it was a broken door switch then nothing would be working, but he indicates just the monitors are not working ........ sounds like a loose connection to me.

welp, i finally got over there to check them out. our schedules kept conflicting.  i got lucky with the double axle and found a ground wire pulled from the power supply. got the monitor back on and the picture was blurry as hell. im guessing he was desperatly trying any dial or switch he could find to fix it. after a few minutes i got it back to picture perfect.

-note to self. drinking at 9am thru sale and offering to fix game at end of day...not a good idea. i may have found that right away had i not been pretty smashed.

-the samarai iv i didnt get so lucky..  question... can a bad transformer cause the entire system not to fire up or just the monitor? but what are the chances it went bad now right?  there is no orange glow on the monitor, no humming or no sign of life. i checked and double checked all connections. the door switch is good, power switch good. game plays now with sound still just no picture. it wasnt playing prior to checking connections.
so does this sound like a monitor issue or something else.

-also, the guy was really pleased! with the fact that one was working before i left. and said he would probably be able to figure out the other one with what i had showed him thru my troubleshooting. that the deal was good,... but i would still like to maybe figure this out as a resonsible favor to him.

Sounds like some variety of monitor issue.  Check and make sure the monitor is getting power.

Transformers rarely die.  They're just a brick of wire.  They definitely don't die from being moved.

Don't work on a game hammered.   You could kill yourself.
