Cocktail "Flipping" Mode
« on: January 15, 2007, 01:01:53 pm »
I tried to look this up on MAWS with no success...

Does anyone have a list of games that support "cocktail" screen flipping for 2nd player?

I am trying to determine if I should go with a horizontal monitor setup or go with a vertical monitor for my cocktail table...if the majority of games are vertical,  I will go that route,  if the majority of games are horizontal...I have some thinking to do.

Good question. Got me to thinking about the cocktail cabinet my older son and I just finished (a Dreamarcades kit).

It turns out so far that of all the game's we've tried on there, almost every one that we liked is a vertical. So we use the end-to-end controls the most. About the only use the side-by-side controls get is for Gauntlet (favorite of the five-year-old) and Joust.

I put a single trackball on one end (mostly for wife to play Centipede). So for Missle Command, I play it rotated to vertical and (horrors!) stretched to fill the screen.

I would like to see a list as well.  You can always add a 3rd CP so you don't have to play a horizontal game on a vertical screen.
I b**ch. People listen!!

I have an oldschool Atari cabinet...so the CP's are already on the "horizontal side"...a single CP on the vertical side would look a bit strange.   I already have 2 stand up cabs (one vertical and one horizontal)...so this is more something to play around with.   I was considering going horizontal as I am going to use a PC monitor and I could surf,  watch videos, etc if I did that...but if the majority of cocktail games are vertical,  that would leave a very small playfield for the majority of the games designed for the cabinet which would be silly...i'd go with the vertical layout and forget the PC based games, etc.

[edit: list removed!  I used the wrong parameters on the search criteria.  :-[]

This list was generated with my uber-ninja mutant tool called RL from MAME 111's XML file.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=55636.0

Using the commands:

rl -in:allgames.xml -out:vertcocktail.xml -find:"cocktail & (rotate=90 | rotate=270)"

and then rl -in:vertcocktail.xml -out:list.txt -d

In other words, find all the games that have "cocktail" something (most likely a dipswitch) and vertical orientation on the monitor.

There may be a few stragglers, but I think this hit the majority of them.

Nice...how about the same list but for horizontal games?

Thanks!

 :-[

ok, let's try this again.  I had the wrong parameters on the last list.  The rotate tags in the xml file are new and are messing with my head.  The way I understand it, rotate is like this:

rotate=0, rotate=180 should be horizontal games
rotate=90, rotate=270 should be vertical.

Too early in the morning for me I guess.

With that in mind, let's see what comes up this time:

Vertical games with cocktail in the description (a better search would be "dipvalue name=cocktail" but this is quick-n-dirty.

rl -in:allgames.xml -out:vertcocktail.xml -find:"(rotate=90 | rotate=270) & cocktail"

So take these lists with a dash of salt.
Things can trip up the search, and certainly if there is any incorrect information in the xml database, it'll come out in my lists too.

For example, I saw "double dragon" in the horizontal cocktail list, and sure enough, it has a dipswitch for setting it to cocktail mode, but how is that supposed to work?  It's a 2 player side by side game, like joust.  (joust btw is not in the list, as I'd expect)

At least (for me anyway) part of the fun is testing all the roms to see which ones actually work on your machine...

Also, you might want to print out the list and cross out the games you don't like (or try them).  And go with what you really like.

Cross out ones that require controls you don't have.

Also, lots of non-cocktail games run great on a cocktail... just without swapping sides.

I personally think that cocktails should be vertical... And possibly add a 3rd controller on the side.  Or maybe add something that can attach to the side and plug in?  Seems like you could do something...

I have a few machines and am about to start on a cocktail table.  I'm going vertical on the cocktail table and horizontal on a standup.

The tool I'm using can do that for you; just change the search criteria:

rl -in:allgames.xml -out:mygames.xml -find:"(joy4way | joy8way) & cocktail & (rotate=90 | rotate=270)"

Or whatever you need.  You can even find only the games that support the number of buttons you have or even remove the clones from the list:

-find:"(joy4way | joy8way) & cocktail & (rotate=90 | rotate=270) & (buttons=3 | buttons=2 | buttons=1 or !buttons=) & !cloneof"

that'll find all the cocktail, vertical, non-cloned games that use 8way, 4way or 2way (mame lists 2way joysticks as 8way for whatever reason) and any button combination from 0 buttons up to 3.   whew! ;D

Not that I'm trying to push the program onto anyone or anything.  ;)

I 100% agree.  I have a vertical cocktail machine myself, and easily a majority of the ROMs (especially classics) are vertical.  I want to add players 3+4 to the side of my machine someday.  I gotta have joust and robotron.

BTW: gauntlet, even though horizontal and non-cocktail, is perfectly playable on a vertical cocktail machine.  You just need to remap the controls so that each player's controls work for their sitting position.  THe only thing that's difficult is reading the text, but it's not that tough to get used to.

Are there any MAMED "vs" type game where both players sit across from each other attempting to best one another?  Sports games?   A vs. Asteroids or tank type game?

FWIW, the first trackball games (atari football, atari soccer) are head to head only (you can't play alone, like air hockey).

The tool I'm using can do that for you; just change the search criteria...

Might want to pull out the games that the driver doesn't support cocktail mode.  I'm guessing:

rl -in:allgames.xml -out:mygames.xml -find:"(joy4way | joy8way) & cocktail & (rotate=90 | rotate=270) & (buttons=3 | buttons=2 | buttons=1 or !buttons=) & !cloneof & !cocktail=preliminary

NOP, does this app basicaly string search?  I'm asking because some of mame's xml repeat names.  For example, chip, control, and chip elemant all have a "type" attribute, but they all have different valid values.  To take it further, disk, driver, and rom elements all have "status" attributes; disk & rom are simular while driver has a different set of valid values.
How could I do something like all games that all of it's roms status are "good" but have at least one disk status with "baddump" or "nodump" and the driver status is "good" or "imperfect"?

there is a thread here somewhere about cocktail vs games. but three that i enjoy are space invaders II, hot shots tennis and tekken world cup (world cup should use a trackball but is still fun with a joy).

Yes, it's a string search utility.
The tools works on anything between <game> and </game> in the xml file.  Each criteria is tested separately, and then the status returned is ORed/ANDed together as it's working through the input.

What your asking for is slightly outside the scope of what it was written for, so I haven't paid much attention to the rom/disk status, and am just now seeing people using emulation status, so we might have to revisit how this works.  Perhaps adding a + operator like so:

find:"(disk+baddump | disk+nodump) & (!rom+baddump | !rom+nodump) & driver+status=good"

The + would tell the utility that all of the keywords have to be found on the same physical text line perhaps?  Think that would do it?

BTW the "or" in the last buttons bit should be a "|" instead of the actual word OR.  My mistake there.

It appears as if I have quite a bit of work to do on this tool still.  Luckily, I'm still excited about working on it, so I think this could be a feature add in the next release.

I made a cocktail .ini file that goes in the "folders" of Mame32 to display which games support and actually work in cocktail mode. It may be a little dated though, as I made this file for verison .075 -.085 of Mame32 (might be more that have support by now, but it's a good start).

Not all Games that have the "cocktail flipping" in their dipswitches work properly (eg. Exciting Hour, among others).

Accessing the ability to make some games "flip " in cocktail mode is done within the game's service screens and not just in the dipswitches accessed by pressing the "Tab" key.

Also some "Original" Roms don't support "cocktail flipping" while one of their "clones" do... and vise versa...

I hope my rambling makes sense to you all and here's the file... ;D

In the late 70's and early 80's, more games were vertical than horizontal. These were also the years that most of the cocktails were manufactured. Because of this I'd expect there to be a LOT more vertical games that support flipping than horizontal.

This theory is also the reason I decided to build a cocktail to run vertical games instead of an upright.

Whoa. I'd never thought that there may be hidden cocktail modes inside a game's service screens.  Any idea how many of those there are?  Can you give an example?
I assume that controls.dat is a tad more accurate with regards to this.

Did you compile this list by hand?  I'd like to compare it against one generated by my ROMLister tool and see how things match up.  I'd be happy to give this list a good home on my site:
http://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister

...although I'd want to break it down into vertical and horizontal lists.
I too went with a vertical cocktail machine (used a gutted Galaga machine).
I've currently got 125 games on it that are verified to work, but I'm always curious if I've missed a couple somewhere-hence my software was written.

As for how many games had the ability to change to "cocktail" mode in their service screens... I can't remember (but there are several), its been a couple of years since I made that .ini file. As an example, the game Blast Off is one such game. I've included a pic of the service screen and what has to change (they are highlited in a red box). Some games only need the "Rank" changed and others need both "Rank" and "Type" changed. Generally these options are A-B-C sometimes D, I just played wth the different options and then started the game in 2 Player to see if the screen flipped for Player 2. In the pic this is the setting (Blast Off) for making it flip in cocktail mode. Sometimes the screen gets flipped like a mirror (reversed text, etc...) in some games but you just use some of the other settings like "Flip" screen or do the same kinda thing for the individual game using the mame settings... I hope this is understandable...    :dunno

Yes I spent hours going thru each game and compiled it by hand. I'm sure alot of the "parent roms" have the cocktail mode as well but I only used the US or World versions to be seen for my own cocktail machine. You can use the list I compiled any way you like. I hope if you add any that support cocktail that I either missed or have been fixed, you'll add it to the list and make it downloadable for all to use. That would be great if you broke it down between vertical and horizontal games but still include the full list as well. I have a horizontal cocktail so its nice to have all the games that support "cocktail".

Well, good luck and enjoy... I know I tried to find such a list for cocktail with no luck... I hope this helps fellow cocktail owners save some time and headaches.   :cheers:

I believe that these game service screens are the 'soft dipswitches' for games that don't have actual dipswitches on the PCB.  I think that when this is the way it is, then dipswitches is not even an option in the TAB menu.  (I wouldn't be surprised if there were exceptions...)

That's correct... Pretty much what I stated in my first post in this thread. Alot of people would be looking only at the dipswitch options when hitting "Tab" where as if you look in the games service screens (softdip)  you'll find others that cocktail flip as well. Not sure if the "Romlister" proggy would find these or not??? Just trying to bring these options to light for those with cocktail machines who did not know.   :)

Yes, thanks for pointing this out.  I never did think of this.  I don't believe that softdips are found by RL, as I don't believe that they are in the xml.

I just wanted to clarify that 'game service screens' was the same (or also known) as softdips.

Also note that some games that are two player simultaneous that have a cocktail dip actually change to alternating if you enable it.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Not sure if the "Romlister" proggy would find these or not??? Just trying to bring these options to light for those with cocktail machines who did not know.   :)

It absolutely would not.  I looked at MAME's xml output for Blast Off and there is no mention whatsoever of anything cocktail in the description, and then I looked at controls.xml and it too says cocktail=0.

I've got big-time mixed feelings about this.  First I'm bummed that my software isn't going to locate all of the ROMs that might play on your machine, and I'm overwhelmed by the feeling of having to manually poke around in all the ROMs to locate these hidden cocktail modes, however, I'm excited that I may be able to include some of the games that I'd written off as not working on my machine!  whew!  :D

well, we will have to keep working by hand to build up lists like turbo6 has done.
I'll gladly host them, although perhaps a wiki entry is a better idea, then people can add their own discoveries to it...

Also note that some games that are two player simultaneous that have a cocktail dip actually change to alternating if you enable it.

Yes that is true. Some of them you can change "Upright Controls" setting from Duel to Single which allows cocktail to work properly. There are a few games that have this setting that you may need to change, so when the screen flips for Player 2 the joystick will work as Player 2 and not Player 1.

On another note... about screen being turned to Player 2 (at game startup) when changing the dips to cocktail. Jungle King (Japan) does this, all I did was use the Mame settings in the "Display Tab" and check "Flip screen upside-down" and "Flip screen left-right" and all is OK.   :applaud:

I figured more people would be interested in the .ini file for their cocktail machines... maybe not as many people with cocktail arcades than I thought there would be.   :dunno

That's too bad, I was hoping Romlister would find them all... I guess we'll have to continue compiling by hand... as I'm sure several games have been added or fixed since my .ini file was created. I don't usually update Mame on a regular basis though. The PC I'm gonna use in the cocktail machine is pretty slow (PII-400) so i'll probably stick to my full set for version 0.90. But my list was made back in version 0.70-something, so still there's probably work to be done for myself anyway.

It would be nice if there was a Wiki entry for this but thats not something I have a clue about doing, maybe someone with experience could write something up...   :dunno

I've started a wiki entry:

http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Lists

It's very, very rough at the moment but it's a start.  If you find a new game, just click the edit button and type it in!

It may be nice to eventually just link to separate wiki pages for vertical+horizontal cocktail lists or however else we'd like to break them up.
There are also games like gauntlet, which is 100% not cocktail, but can absolutely be configured to work on a cocktail machine.  We may want to list those somewhere else too.  Ugh.

Way to go with the Wiki...    :applaud:

I like the idea of seperate pages... Yeah, I had my cocktail setup for Gauntlet when I was testing. Yep, its gonna be alot of work... I dread going thru the roms again.  :banghead:

I wonder how many members here have cocktail machines?

Another oddball (regarding cocktail dipswitch) is Warlords.  The screen doesn't flip, rather it acts more like a B&W/color selector (maybe other changes??? I don't think so but I don't really know).  (uprights had B&W w/ colored overlay, while cocktails were color, no overlay).  So RL would find Warlords as a cocktail game (which it is), but inaccurately in the sense that the search is for (for flippers).

Sorry to resurrect a sleeping thread!

Am I correct in assuming there is no automatic way to take a list like the ones in the Wiki linked above and pre-switch from upright to cocktail, since every game has its own DIP banks etc?

Depending on the alignment of various celestial bodies, I may undertake to toggle my ROM CFGs in just this manner sometime.

I note that, for example, the rom INVADERS generates the following, "out of the box" (for me at least)
Code: [Select]
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!-- This file is autogenerated; comments and unknown tags will be stripped -->
<mameconfig version="10">
    <system name="invaders" />
</mameconfig>
and after changing just the relevant thing, that file now looks like this:
Code: [Select]
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!-- This file is autogenerated; comments and unknown tags will be stripped -->
<mameconfig version="10">
    <system name="invaders">
        <input>
            <port type="CONFIG_NAME" mask="1" index="35" defvalue="0" value="1" />
        </input>
    </system>
</mameconfig>
ie, the addition of one <input> element.

I'm thinking of a script to load the .cfg for a ROM, identify the appropriate container element (<system> in this case) and merge in the <input> element to batch-set all relevant ROMs for cocktail flipping mode.

SoftDIPs notwithstanding of course.

I make no guarantees to ever getting around to this either, but does anyone think it would be useful (although v probably brittle over time)?

wow.  if I understand this right, that's a pretty heavy undertaking to do, but could really be a timesaver for folks setting up their cocktail machines from scratch.

Since, I assume as you do, there is no generic cocktail switch to throw, you'd have to start from scratch and then tweak each rom to set it to cocktail and then do a diff on them to see what changed, and build up a database or batch file or something so that it could be run on another user's machine.

Personally, launching each and every ROM (after getting the list down to just the ROMs that supported my machine of course) was part of the fun in setting my machine up, so I had no problems with doing this all by hand, cuz then you have to play test and all...

I really like the idea of perhaps making more wiki entries or even a dedicated group/forum for cocktail owners, because we could not only share config files and lists, and config tweakers like this, but also ideas on what other upright games can be cocktailized without wrecking too much of the game play.

Speaking of which, does anyone know how to get asteroids into cocktail mode?  It's got a hardware jumper to select it, but since it is technically not a dipswitch, I can't find a setting in MAME?

I hear ya.... I've tried getting cocktail mode enabled in Defender with no luck. Maybe its my old version of Mame(v0.90),  :dunno   Maybe I'm just missing something in the softdip???

My cocktail is an old Defender cocktail (not worth refurb) converted to a Mame machine. How's that for irony.... :laugh2:
