Why do I always go to the top of the page?
« on: October 05, 2006, 09:23:05 am »
This has pissed me off for a while on this site so I figured I'd post to see if it's jsut me or what...

Every other website I go to, when I click a link to read a thread, and then click the BACK button, I get taken back to the page I was on and the pages goes to the SAME LOCATION I was viewing.  Meaning if I was scrolled down 75% of the page, when I click back, that's right where I'd be.

On this site, it ALWAYS goes to the top of the page for whatever reason which means lots more scrolling around trying to find where i was.

Is it like this by design or is some code just screwed up somewhere?  Whatever the reason, it sucks.

Odd... it doesn't happen to me... something in the theme or browser perhaps?

I'm using Firefox and it does it on every computer I use.  I haven't modified any theme or anything that I know if.  I'll try IE *gag* and see if it does it there for me.

EDIT: Seems to be limited to FireFox.  Anyone else using FF have this problem?

You know I was just fine when I didn't realize it was happening.  Thanks!   :)

Someone (SirWoogie??) mentioned this after the first big upgrade.  It worked at one point, but supposedly it couldnt be put back in for some reason.

Thats what I remember anyway.  I really wish they could fix it, cuz it is rather annoying.

It must jsut be something in the page code that is forcing it to stay at the top.  But I'm not a web developer...

But i'd think someoen could find what it is and fix it.

Just thought I'd post a fix for this issue if it's still bugging the heck out of people like it was for me.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Scroll_position_on_web_pages_not_remembered

Has an extension you can install for FF to fix the issue and also explains why it happens in case someone wants to fix the site...

Hmm, I just put it on yesterday and it seems to work pretty well. It still goes to the top sometimes but most of the time it goes back to where I was.  Seems kind of hit and miss for me but it works more often than not.

Hopefully someone will just change whatever is wrong in the coding of the site so we don't ave to worry about the extension anyway.  :)

This is an item in the forum software to disable going back to cached pages. When we had that feature on, more people complained that they didn't want to go back to the same spot in pages and that in IE the browser will prompt you with a dialog about the cached page ("...go back to cached page....").

I can of course re-enable this feature and see how things work out. What does everybody think?

I've never heard of someone NOT wanting to go back to where they were.  It's such a pain to be 3/4 of the way down the page, view a thread, click Back, and then have to scroll back down to figure out where I was again.  Going back to the same spot is standard on every other forum that I visit.

I didn't say it was a good reason, but was what people had issue with.

Did something get changed recently?  All of a sudden I'm going up to the top of the forums now every time.  I don't go to the top of the page, but I go to the top of the thread area.  But now I'm not going back to where I was previously like I was the other day when I used that extension I linked in above.

Argh!

No, we have not changed anything on our side.

FYI, this is the description of the feature I was discussing earlier:

Quote
Turning this on will decrease the bandwidth your forum uses,
and make it so clicking back will not reload the page - the downside
is that the (new) icons won't update, among other things. (unless
you click to that page instead of going back to it.)

Hey! Yeah!
Does it to me too (using FFox).
Never noticed before 'cause got into the habit of middle-clickin
everything, leavin pages with links where they were at.
Heheh multiple tabs everywhere.
That 'post-data' warning is a pain - but there must be a way
to set it not to show/prompt.  maybe in the about:config  somewhere?

edit-added:
if, indeed, this  ("...go back to cached page....")  thing is the same thing as the 'post-data' thing.

It will reload the page if you click Reload or if you click the "Main Forum" link at the top.  Otherwise yea, it shoudl jsut go back to where you were before and not reload everything.

That's how every other forum I've ever visited worked until I came here.

IMHO that's how it should be.
