Cheap Steering Wheel at Target

I went to Target today and they had a Logitech USB Nascar Steering wheel with foot pedals on clearance for $10.69.  It was reduced from $49.99!   ;D  So far it works great with mame.  I tried Out Run, Pole Position, Pole Position 2 and Super Sprint. 

Any suggestions on what percent sensitivity I set in mame? 

Also, can someone list all of the good driving games in mame that support a steering wheel?  Thanks!

I thought that wheel only had rumble and not actually force feedback?

That amazon links says vibration feedback, guess that's not the same as force-feedback, but who cares at that price.....
Wish I could find a bargain like that here....shipping that thing would cost a lot I guess...heavy, big, etc......

I'm going to see if I can arrange a swing by Target when I'm out with the wife later,  probably shouldn't be buying anything else this week (tokens earlier) but at $11 it's hard to not charge it.  I loved driving games as a kid and if I could work this and a spinner into some sort of use it would be fantastic.

The one I got is the same one as the Amazon link.

I thought it had force feedback and vibration feedback, but I could be wrong.  I have no way of testing it in mame!  ;)  It works great with Pole Position so far...

It has extendable "lap rails" on either side and removable suction cups for mounting.

The suction cups work great on my CP. I had it up and working in 5 minutes. $10.69 +tax. Hard to beat!

Now we can play driving games!  :applaud:

Thanks for the tip, deadpool!  I went by Target earlier today and saw one on the clearance rack, but it was priced at $29.99.   :cry:

Thinking that it was an old ticket, I took it to one of the scanners and checked it out.  Sure enough, it came up at $10.62!   :applaud:

I wouldn't have been interested at the marked price, and I wouldn't have taken a second look if it wasn't for your message.  Much appreciated!  :cheers:

I *think* the difference is that with Vibration feedback, if you are turning to the left and it's hard, the wheel will vibrate to simulate a tough turn.  But if it's Force Feedback, the wheel will actually push against you and try to turn itself back to the right while you try to hold it to the left.  More realistic than just vibrations.

Damn shame there aren't more force feedback products on the market. I remember when it was such a hot ticket feature that even mice were equipped with force feedback. Damn patent trolls.  :badmood:

How do you configure the wheel to work with Mame?  I have tried with my Thrustmaster Pro Digtal Nascar 2 wheel and cannot seem to get it to work with pedals and wheel.  It is also a USB connection.  Any thoughts?

If you already have joystick enabled, start the game up, press 'tab' and go to 'input this game', select the analog axis you want to map, press enter, and then move the wheel.  Same thing with the pedals.

Did you have them check other stores in the area?Only 2 of the 10 stores or so around here had them. One had 1 and one had 2.  They are scares since they are discontinued and clearanced out.

I called the local Target and gave the numbers provided by dfmaverick and they found one in stock at another Target.  I dropped by after work and picked it up for $12.48.  Got home and suctioned it to the CP top -- fits perfectly between the trackball and player one buttons and holds solidly.  Plugged it in and XP recognizes it with no drivers.  Loaded up Outrun, and everything was already mapped perfectly!  Then I realized I could finally play Spy Hunter with this thing.  I can't tell you how great it works.  Plus it can be easily removed and stored to save CP clutter.  Thanks a million!  :cheers:

I hear ya! I didn't want to pay $50 - $100 for a wheel not knowing how well it would work. If it didn't work, big deal, I only paid $11 for it. I am sure it is not the best solution out there but when the wife says "hell yeah go get it"...you go get it!

I've been reading and enjoying these boards for a long time now, and I'm glad that I could finally contribute something!   :)
(I also bought Saint's book to show support)

Out Run, Turbo Out Run, and Pole Position are way more fun now.  ;D

I got the last one at my local store, but I haven't checked other stores.  Target is weird, because their clearance prices vary from store to store.  That's why some people are finding it for $10, and others for $12.

My wife and I seem to always wind up in Target for something, so if I see any other good deals I'll be sure to post them here.

My brother works at target, bought the wheel for 10, i went to the other target, they had none.  I asked him to pick me up one the next day at the store he works, they were out.  When he bought his he said there was alot of them !!!!!! Ill call the other two stores tomorrow.... My bro told me i can have his, he wont use it anyways, he just bought it because it was on clearance.

Too little too late for me.. none of the stores in my area (including Edgewater, New Jersey) carry the item anymore...

Spinners don't work very well for pot-based/270 degree wheel games (Spy Hunter, Outrun, Road Blasters, APB, etc).

what settings do you use for the wheel? 
I have deadzone at .25
sensitivity at 13%

Sprint just doesnt have the same feel for steering.  I know the original game uses a 360 degree wheel. 

Please let me know what settings you use.

I called target and they told me that there was 1 at a store about 25 minutes (one way) from where I live.  I asked them to hold it, piled my 2 kids into the car, and took off.  I got there and the guy at the electronics counter acted like he didn't have any idea what was going on.  We ended up walking around looking for it, even though the guy told me he was going to hold it at the counter.  After walking around for a couple minutes,  I notice the thing on the shelf, on top of some other product!  So I grab it, and finish walking to the end of the isle, and I see about 4 others on the end-cap.  So I got another one for a friend of mine.  Woohoo.  They don't look bad. 

If it wasn't for how much it would cost to ship, I would have bought the other ones and tried to sell them here.  But I'd probably have to sell them for about 30 bucks each in order for it to be worth it.  10 bucks sure sounds better than 30. :-)

Thanks for telling us about this deal! I'm excited to try it out.

My brother works at target, bought the wheel for 10, i went to the other target, they had none.  I asked him to pick me up one the next day at the store he works, they were out.  When he bought his he said there was alot of them !!!!!! Ill call the other two stores tomorrow.... My bro told me i can have his, he wont use it anyways, he just bought it because it was on clearance.

my brother found two more in the store he works at and bought it for me, we both came out with one..need to go pick it up at the house.

can someone that is testing this compile a list of games it works well with.. and your settings.. i have an extra empty cab, maybe i can do a standup driving cab.

what settings do you use for the wheel? 
I have deadzone at .25
sensitivity at 13%

Sprint just doesnt have the same feel for steering.  I know the original game uses a 360 degree wheel. 

Please let me know what settings you use.

I just used the defaults (I didn't even install the drivers), but I haven't tried the wheel with any 360 wheel games since the spinner works much better for those.  This wheel also works well for Roadblasters.

I think you can set it up in mame if you want to use keys or pedals for the gas/brake.  I'll check tonight when I get home.  Also, I was really surprised at how sturdy the wheel felt.  I think it's about 5 pounds, and the wheel doesn't feel like some hollow hard plastic tube.  If I could figure out how to get it to work with Road Blasters, I'd give it an enthusiastic thumb way up. Everybody else seems to think that it's working great, so I think it's probably just some setting I'm not setting correctly.

Oh, also, the wheel doesn't go more than all the way around.  I think it's like if you look at the wheel, you can turn 12 o'clock down to 6 o'clock either way (to the right or left) and as you get closer to 6, you seem to get more and more resistance.  It feels pretty good to me.  I'm not totally positive about the fact that it only goes 1 complete revolution.  Once again, I'll check when I get home.

That's right, it's not a 360 degree optical wheel, so you can't keep spinning it around and around and around.  As such, while you can use it to play Pole Position, it's not a 100% authentic arcade experience.  It's more appropriate for games like Rave Racer and the like, where the wheel matches the one used in an arcade.

Still, for the ridiculously low price, it's sure close enough for me, at least until I get around to building the driving panel with the old Pole Position wheel I picked up awhile back.  But the Nascar wheel will still be useful for the 270 degree games!

Sweet.  I think it was set to like 50 when I first tried it, and I think I understood the sensitivity setting backwards, so I set it to like 95.  I didn't notice a change.  I'll try it at 1 when I get home. 

TAG:  Yeah, you really can't beat 10 bucks.   And it is a billion times better than using keys or a joystick or something.

I don't know why I keep checking this thread.  It just makes me resent you all a little more each time...  I gotta get some kind of wheel setup in my cab soon... maybe even a spinner based so I can play Pole Position.

Well I tried again last night and you are right, Roadblasters just doesn't feel quite right.  I have the sensitivity way down, but it still doesn't work like Outrun.  Hard to explain.  I noticed that MAME lists the control as 'dial' implying optical.  Outrun is listed as 'paddle'.  Wasn't the original game a pot-based yoke, not optical?  It works perfectly with a spinner.

Did you have them check all the Targets in your area?  I was surprised they were able to do that when I called.  They told me the two targets in town that had them in stock.

I tried Outrun last night and it worked great.  I remember playing that at the arcade and I remember being amazed at how great it looked.  Now it's amazing how bad it looks. :-)  Still, it's a blast to play.

bfauska:  I did as a few others in this thread have done - I called my local target, told them this number - 080000826 - and they were able to look for the thing at any of the Targets within like 30 miles of my house.  And they found some at a Target bout 20 miles from my house.  :-)

After deciding that I really don't need one of these... ;)...I went to my local target and they had none...they checked for me and the other local target was out too but one an hour away from me has six.  I'll pass  Any one live in Valejo, CA?  Go get em.  ;D

I have to figure a way to put it on my CP, but at least I got one before NO stores around me had any.  If I include the gas price I still got it for less than $20 so that's good.

My wife picked one up for me at the Target in White Plains, NY (after Ninten-doh's wife struck out for me in Clifton, NJ). And I still suck at Outrun.
