Congratulations to MrCurmudgeon for winning both sides of the Token design contest for the '07 tokens.

So here's what happens next. I need to put up some sort of preorder page. On it I will ask a question something like "If we don't order the metal you want would you take the other metal?" Your choices will be a)yes or b)no, refund my money. Because I spend a lot of money up front on the tokens, I charge the full price up front for pre-orders. There is too much at risk for me to accept less. I realize this isn't ideal, but it's how I do it.

Once orders have been open for a few weeks I make a decision if there are enough orders to proceed with either 1) 10,000 Brass or 2) 10,000 brass and 10,000 nickel, or 3) None of the above. If I am able to at least break even on the original order, I will place the order.

If we only have enough demand to order 10,000 brass, the people who indicated they would not accept brass instead of nickel will get paypal refunds.

If don't have enough demand for even 10,000 brass, I will contact the people who preordered to see if they are interested in higher 5000 lot pricing. If there are enough 'yes'es, we will do that. Else - no tokens and everyone gets a refund.

It will take a few days to get the pre-orders up on my website, I need to modify my store code to allow it to ask the questions. I'll post here when it's ready.

I would like to vote on a slogan to replace the "How Retro Can You Go?". If we don't decide to mess with slogans this year I am still in for coins. Mr. C's design is just too good to pass up.

I've got to admit that "How Retro Can You Go" just doesn't work for me, although everything else about the tokens is great.

Of course, I'm partial "To Preserve and Destroy," but that's just the ego-maniac in me speaking (I guess I should take my meds, huh?)

If I propose a vote on slogans I'll be run out of town for delaying it any longer. If I don't I'm unfair.

Some thoughts:
-One could argue that we should vote for tradition's sake.
- There are no less than three slogans on these tokens, how many do we want to 'put to a vote?'
- The wrong slogan could easily break the artistic feel of the design.
- I don't think I mentioned a slogan vote this year and many probably thought they were voting on the 'whole package.'

If there's a large majority outcry for a slogan vote, I'll consider it, but I'd honestly rather not if people can generally live with them as they are.

Edit: and if this gets ugly I reserve the right to just freeze the token as it is and let the chips fall where they may. Be civil.

If there were to be a vote, I think it's highly likely that the final slogan will have nothing to do with the design, which, to me, would seem awkward...and could ruin the design as a whole. I'm not opposed to the idea that there's something potentially "better", slogan-wise...but at this point, it seems crazy to imagine just slapping something else in there.

For my part, I read the rules several times to make sure there wasn't a slogan to account for. Granted I haven't followed the token contest in past years...so I have no idea if the "slogan vote" happened at this stage. I wish I would have known that, because I would have certainly suggested that the slogan be voted on FIRST. Since, as a designer, we don't usually start the process of designing until we have all the copy (text content).

That's my .02

P.S. Outside of this whole debate...I REALLY want to thank all those who voted. All the designs were worthy of becoming tokens, and I'm honored to have mine chosen (even though it appears it still has to run the gauntlet)!

I came to the party a bit late this year and missed out on the voting. I wasn't too happy with this design at first, but it's grown on me a lot as something completely different from past designs. Kind of reminds me of the penny arcade on Main Street at Disneyland all those years ago.

Sorry Mr. C, here's my .02 at this point - I agree with other comments about the "How Retro Can you Go?" slogan. Just doesn't feel right to me. I think something like "Build. Restore. Play" that we saw on other designs could look really good in that space and font, and also sort of ties into the gears and cogs theme.

I'm up for a vote (just on that one)...

P.S., Either way, I'll be buying some of this year's run. And actually, Santoro, I would think the Brass would fit better with this design in particular, just to reinforce the theme - Not sure if I'd even want Nickel for this one...

Thinking about a bit, I see two issues:

1) Thematically, the slogan should fit.
2) Spatially, the slogan should fit.

As for issue #1, I don't have a clue on how to guarantee that. But for issue #2, I can find out what the maximum number of characters are that would fit on the banner, and that could be the maximum length for slogan text. (the text is already reeeeally small, so it probably can't get any smaller/longer and remain readable.) Note: Santoro/Pixelhugger will need to define the size limitations here.

For the record, I don't want people to buy the tokens, and still dislike the slogan.

Despite what I said previously, I agree. There's no need to delay the token run any longer. I'm not the biggest fan of the slogan, but delaying another week or two may not even come up with a "better" one.

Plus, the slogan certainly isn't going to stop me from ordering, so I say just move on and stick with what is there.

FWIW - I think the BUILD RESTORE PLAY slogan is better than "How Retro Can You Go?" I've got a mockup here, but I would do those words in the same font as Mr.C. had the "Retro" text (I didn't have it).

I'm fine with changing it to BUILD RESTORE PLAY, if that's what it comes down to. I'm not going to make that decision though, in lieu of the fact that 43 people voted on the token as it was displayed. I'll leave that to Santoro (whom I'm absolutely positive will be more explicit in the design instructions next year).

I like the "retro"phrase myself. It really goes with the theme. obviously the voters liked it too, since it was part of the theme and they voted for it. In a game room setting, I think the average visitor will "get" the retro theme of the coin.

If we're talking about slogans, I'm more concerned about "MAME Aeternus", which requires us to get MAMEDEV blessing. "Forix Aeternus" translates roughtly to "Arcade Eternal"... most translators will also come up with "Ianus Aeternus", but I can just imagine what most people's first impression of "Ianus" is.

As far as "Mame" is concerned, I believe Santoro already has their blessing. I believe I read that in the original design submission thread, so I included it in the latin phrase "Mame Everlasting". (Which STAYS, btw...I love that one just too much. Unless MameDev's have changed their minds)

Also, I went with "Mame" instead of "arcade" specifically because of the anus thing. No need to turn these into ass tokens.

This was my first opportunity to cast a vote, and all of the designs were excellent. I voted for both of Mr C's designs, though the "Retro" slogan made the decision difficult for me as I preferred the text on some of the other designs. I am one of those freaks that reads the fine print, whether on paper or coin...

Outside of Ass Tokens, I'm partial to "Build Restore Play" and would cast a vote in favor; this seems less kitsch than the "Retro" slogan.

Nothing wrong with kitsch, mind you.

Or ass, for that matter.

we only voted on slogans last year, the previous years it was the artist's work. The main reason for the slogan vote last year was so that we could get more artist involved who might come up with great designs, but not a witty slogan. Most designs last year used the "All your games are belong to us" with the understanding there would be a vote for a slogan.

I'm happy with the design either way. I would rather this particular design keep the "How Retro" slogan because of the design. The "MAME AETERNUS" on the flip side isn't my favorite, but if the artist preferred to keep it. Then I have no objections.

If there had been more entries using a generic slogan, then I would say we need to vote a slogan, but this years submissions each design had themed their particular design around their own slogans.

Did people somehow not read that slogan when they voted the first time? It was right there in the design - if you didn't like it you shouldn't have voted for it. I voted for other tokens pretty much because of the slogan on Mr C's... I liked the design but the slogan wasn't what I wanted. That was the time to make your voice heard, not after the voting closed. The design I voted for didn't win - boo hoo - now I'm ready to make my preorder.

I say keep it as it and just take the preorders. People had their chance to vote.

I'd like to toss in some 2006 tokens as well.

That is part of the problem with doing this every year: everyone ends up with too many tokens.

As soon as preorders were opened, I went to the page with great excitement only to be disappointed that I couldn't preorder a smaller quantity. I'm just starting my cab: (a) Budget is very tight, and (b) I've not decided on tokens or quarters yet.

I'd like to see a 50 or 100 quantity, and would place a preorder today if that were an option...

I believe the break even for Santoro is 10,000 tokens - if he did smaller pre-orders, he would never reach that goal. Either a group buy with others, or wait and hope there are some left over after the initial quantities are filled is the way to go. Incidentally - that is why I missed out on last years tokens, I waited to get a smaller amount after...

I would imagine it's faster to reach the minimum requirement for the token run if the pre-order amounts require a larger purchase. It looks like the quantities get split into smaller amounts once the tokens are minted.

I need to structure the sales in a way that we get enough orders to justify making the tokens at all.. this due to factory minimums. I also need to be sure I don't get stuck with too many unsold tokens.

Because of this, I do the same thing every year.. We have minimum orders of 200 of each metal for the first round, then a a few months after the tokens are avaiiable I make 100-lots available. If I had 100 or 50-lots available up front, most people would go for those to save money. This is not a very big market, and it's likely we would either not have enough tokens to order at all, or I might not make any profit at all due to unsold ones.

This way everyone wins.. If you want a smaller lot, you will be able to get one, you just need a little patience.

I guess before I opened my mouth I should have thought about whether or not this appeared to undermine the minimum order requirement. I want to hold on the group buy offer until I get the blessing from Santoro, out of respect for all the effort he puts into creating these tokens.

I mean, there's nothing to stop people from just doing it, but I'd like to make sure it's helpful, rather than harmful.

It doesn't always have to be about being cheap. I bought into the artwork group buy at $50. I just have no need for 200 tokens. I don't even have a need for 50 tokens, but would like to show my support with an order none-the-less.
If a group buy isn't in the cards, then I'll just wait and see if small orders become available once all is said and done.

Oooo hadn't thought of that. I guess group buys pretty much negates the concept of minimum order for production.I'll take my chances after they've been minted if Santoro wishes... In fact, if there is any question or hesitation on Santoro's part, I'd rather wait and let the process evolve rather than circumventing.

For those that think 200 is "oddles" of tokens, put 200 quarters into a pile and you realize it isn't as many as it sounds like. And it would get a bit annoying having to open up the coin box after every 200 drops to get them back out.

I understand it is a big outlay (bigger each year), but IMO worth it.

This is the first year I've ordered the tokens... didn't have a use for them before. I ordered 100 each of 2004 and 2005 a couple weeks ago and my preorder for the 2007 tokens is in now... well considering I haven't hacked my pinball mechs and my project "old skool" is still not complete, they just sit in the plastic tub.... I'm sure my boy has snuck off with one or two to show off and lost them, but 'tis no big deal I've still got plenty.... And since I order 200 a year I don't have to worry about running out when my cabinet is complete. I do however, need to pull a few aside once my gameroom is complete, just in case i start seeing more disappear....

Since it's your design, you may want more for the bragging rights of having been the artist of this years tokens, but you'll most likely want to get some of previous years or other types of tokens just for the sake of having a variety. A token pusher is going to require quite a few tokens within itself, and you'll also need quite a few for a slot machine... I can take better pictures of mine when I get home, but that plastic container isn't that big and there's a little over 1000 tokens in there and it isn't nowhere near full.

Status update:

It really doesn't look like Nickel is going to happen this year as we are struggling just to get to the levels we need for Brass. If I take out those few orders for nickel that indicated "no substitution," we have paid orders for 4700 Brass. If we get 7-8 more orders for 200 we should be good to go for brass.

edit: clarified wording. We don't have 4700 orders, we have orders for 4700 tokens.

Update.

The 2007 tokens are expected to arrive the first week in December. I hesitate to mention it because it seems to good to be true, but the woman at the mint thinks she can get an exception for me so I can order 5000 Nickel instead of the usual 10000 minimum. Cross your fingers she can really get it done. If so, everyone will be happy.

I also ordered some Brass MAME tokens and Brass 2006 BYOAC tokens. The store should be pretty well stocked with Brass through the spring.

I sent personal notes from the store to the pre-orderers, but I wanted to publicly thank everyone for thier patience with the process. I have been really very busy at my day job and it was hard to make time to do all the pre-work and coordination in a timely manner. I promise we will start much earlier in 2008 so that we aren't delivering tokens when its almost 2009!

I second this. This is by far the most friendly and sensible message board on the entire internet mostly due to the awesome people that support this hobby such as yourself. In fact, it's so classy that I think we could install crystal chandeliers and plush red velvet carpeting.

Nickel has arrived. This is very odd as Brass usually shows up first. I'm going to call in case something was messed up.

In short, they look great.

As usual the photos show more details than the naked eye. In person they look clean and smooth even though the photos show minor blemishes.

I'm trying to figure out what will happen for my order. I had originally ordered nickel with no substitutions and was informed that it was brass or nothing at a later date. I agreed to switch so minimums could be met. Am I back to nickel at this point or do I have to order more ?

These things are a work of art. Is it just me or is the mint getting better? I was looking at the "How Retro Can You Go?" ribbon and was just amazed at how such tiny details came out. The brass also seems lighter and brighter than the older BYOAC tokens, even the ones I preserved in airtight capsules.

Just got back from visiting family for the holiday when, much to my surprise, Santa had dropped off the tokens at my house!!
Wow! The mint did an amazing job rendering these things in metal. I thought for sure the detail would be too much, but it looks like they rose to the challenge. I'm really pleased (and I'm usually a pretty picky bastard).

I'm so happy with them I want to use tokens to pay for everything from now on.

Kudos Santoro and thanks again for bringing these to the community on a yearly basis!

Whoohoo! My 200 brass tokens arrived today!!! ..............well, 198 of them did.
It looks like customs opened up one of the rolls to check on contents and then decided to pocket two of these lovely little coins, can't blame them really, they're gorgeous.

I ordered 200 '06 and 200 '07 tokens. Got 7 unopened rolls, one torn roll package and 48 loose tokens. Still over the moon with these. Bring on the '08 threads, since it is now '08.

I must've been contemplating 100 of each in Brass in the past, but since I've decided to go Nickel. Not sure I need 200 though. The holy grail would be to have 20 of each year in nickel, but alas, I've learned about them too late.

I'm pretty sure I'll just place a 200 order in nickel. The layer of coins in the coinbox will provide that satisfying KerPlink sound that I've been looking for

EDIT: Now I've figured out what I was thinking. The question is, can I get 100 of the Mame nickel tokens and 100 of the 2007 BYOAC nickel tokens?

I've tried ping'ing him through the arcadetokens.com website twice and fired him a PM a few days back too, but haven't heard anything from him.

Trying to track down whether an order my dad placed back in early December shipped. Was intended as an Xmas present and although I expected it to get held up in the post and not arrive until January, I didn't think it would've taken this long.

AFAIK, Santora has to order these in sets of 10,000. Getting every year reminted (50,000 tokens) and then selling them in small quantities is lose/lose and would inevitably leave him financially in the hole with a ton of tokens at his home.

Small lots and sample packs are suggested often. I am always torn because in terms of customer satisfaction I want to give the people what they want.

The harsher business reality is what QB just said - Many people buy tokens from me for collecting purposes. Combined with orders from those that actually use them in cabinets I usually have just enough tokens to enable a 10,000 token order.

If I were to offer samplers and small lots I estimate that 30% of my larger lot orders would switch to smaller ones. In turn I wouldn't be able to order new tokens without being stuck with a LOT of excess inventory.

It's a dilemma. Until I find a lower-risk solution, I need to keep the larger minimum orders.
