Mounting a CRT in a mini cab
« on: August 21, 2007, 05:53:36 pm »
Hi all,

I'm building a mini galaga / pacman cab and wondered if anyone had succeeded in installing a CRT of any size in one.

I know it will be wide enough but will it be deep enough taking into account the unique angle of the monitor - I.e. will I struggling to get the back on?

Any advice would be great.

Ratzz

ok - so I have a bit of experience with this. I just completed a mini galaga style cabinet (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=68683.0). Here is a pic:

As you can see, the monitor mounts straight up. This cabinet is true to scale in the fact that the bezel is properly sized and was reduced to 25% of it's normal size, same with the sideart and marquee.

Before I built the mini bartop cabinet, I had considered a mini cabinet that had proper proportions. I made a mockup with cardboard. Here is a pic:

After I built it, I could see the monitor would not really be visible, and thus the game would be more for looks than playable.

The monitor is a 10"/9" viewable CRT monitor. So I went with the more playable but not 100% accurate bartop. Your call! What size monitor you talking about using?

It is not possible to scale a Ms. Pac-man/Galaga cabinet down to 75-80% and fit a 19" CRT in there properly.  I looked into it when I was building mine and it wasn't even close.  I didn't want to put a tiny 14" or 15" one in there so I didn't look into that and decided to go with a 19" LCD which fit quite nicely.  You might have better luck with a smaller monitor...

Isn't 75% of 19" less smaller than 15" ?

 ;)

yeah... my math skills aren't what they used to be.  ;)

Something looked "off" when I scaled down the size of the monitor during the design phase.  I'm not sure why since the ratio was the same all the way around.  Because of this, I decided to scale down everything except for the size of the monitor.  Now I have a min cab with a monitor that looks pretty big comparatively and since bigger = better, I win!

Thanks for that guys. Thought that might be the answer, but was hoping!

And I know your thread well leapinlew -- great little cab!
