MaLa resolution problem, calling Loadman and Swindus
« on: July 12, 2007, 10:38:31 pm »
I started a new thread since Unclet thinks this might be a MaLa layout issue and not a Stella issue.  The problem is when I exit Stella the layout or resolution is messed up.  This is only happening with Stella my other emulators are working fine.  You can see by the pictures what is happening.

Unclet said this and I thin he is correct.....
The more I look at the pics you posted, the more I believe this might be a MALA layout issue.  It seems the game list text seems to be displayed properly, it is just the blue square border colors which are moved around and no longer line up correctly.

It seems as if everything is shifting down and to the right.  I am using rc9b

Swindus:

Remember I had a problem very similiar to this one a long time ago in which my "Virtual Jaguar" layout would be shifted to the lower right-hand corner of the screen after exiting a game occurred and the MALA gamelist layout was redisplayed?  I do not think it was ever resolved, since I am still experiencing it with RC9.   The problem still occurs for me (see pics).

At least I know squirrellydw is not alone with this obscure problem.  I am sure it has existed since RC4 at least.

Great news ......

Here is some more great (kind of) news ......

I looked into the Virtual Jaguar CFG file and it uses OpenGL as well.  If I turn "off" openGL (ie: useOpenGL = 0), then the shifting of the layout upon exit is no longer seen.  However, the game no longer plays "fullscreen" anymore (even though I have the fullscreen option set), but instead the game display is shifted a bit to the left now, but it seems the games are playable.  Oh well.

Anyway, it is weird that my problem is solved by turning off OpenGL and squirrellydw's problem was solved by turning it on.

Not real sure what OpenGL is, but there is probably some capatibility isue with it and MALA I guess .......

I personally have this problem when set resolutions or refresh rates differ between the two items.

For PC monitor's sake, If Mala  (aka my desktop) is running at 60hz, and an emulator is running at 75hz, when I exit the emu I will have that problem.

That is a very good description of why this problem is seen ..... thanks.    Is there anything which MALA can do to solve this problem?

Perhaps remember the refresh rates before the game starts and then reset the refresh rates when the game exits?

For what it's worth, I too have had this problem.  I'm currently switching my front-end from mamewah to Mala.  So far, I've experienced it with the Atari 2600 emu's and Daphne.  The background image shifts down and to the right, but the game list, snaps, etc., stay in their original position.

I have found a solution that works with my system.  Note: I'm using Mala RC9 and a ATI Radeon 9600 video card.  There's a display option in the video card menu that reads "3D Refresh Rate Override".   While I believe Mala should correct the issue, this has solved my problem for all emu's.

Hope this helps!

There are rumors that Swindus is looking into this item.  If a solution becomes available will you please test it on your system to confirm a fix works with your setup.  Should be easy enough to test I would assume.

I've not experienced this issue, but I run Multires in WinXP which is a tiny system tray app that will lock the refresh rate for you at whatever you set for a given resolution.  Very worth investigating if you don't want WinXP to return to 60hz every time it resizes.
