I have a chance to get either one of those processors for the same price. Question is which one would MAME benefit more from. I know the   Athlon 64 4000 has more GHz’s but the Opteron 165 is dual core plus newer technology not sure how any of this would affect MAME. I would like to hear some opinions on this, especially hands on opinions and not just speculating. Thanks.

As far i know  (i didn't check latest mame version) , Mame is not multithread and not designed for parallax processing.

So the Dual core shouldn't be usefull.  I think the Athlon 4000 would be better at this point in time.

After it depends how mame will evoluate.

Dual core are usefull is your application is designed for.

It could be usefull too if you play Mame while looking a movie on media player for instance.

The opteron has twice the cache...not sure how much of an effect that has on MAME though...

Plus I run my Opteron 165 at 2.7GHZ which makes it faster than the 4000+.

That is a good point, I do hear that they overclock nicely. I think I will go with the Opteron, unless someone can change my mind. Thanks for the input.

Cache makes a HUGE difference for mame...  You notice it when you go down to a celery (wich has 1/2 the cache)...  But I have one and its great.

But take note.  The latest Intel cores (m2 something) are much better for mame then AMD's... and much better then their old processors per clock cycle... plus they are even more overclockable then AMD's.

This, but the way, is from reading the mame forum.  I have an Operteron and have been very happy with it.  But if I was going to buy a processor for my mame cab, it would be intel

Thats true for netbust based Intel chips, but not so much for A64s.

has anyone done any real comparisons between the Athlons and Durons from the same 'series'?

I would love to compare it.

But yeah, all tests I did was on Intel / Celery's...  And then I did the same compare against some of the latest games of the day and some other testing apps.  At teh time, it seems like all apps where around 10% different... but the emulation was more like 15 - 20% different.

...and you will experience less of a gain going from 256K cache to 512K cache than you did going from 128K cache to 256K cache...
