Shutdown or sleep?
« on: May 30, 2007, 09:52:39 am »
Wasn't sure if this was a hard or software question.

What do you guys do with your cabs when you're not playing on them? Do you shut the PC down, put it to sleep or hibernate, or just let it go in some sort of demo mode?

I am going to install an external power button, but not sure what I want it to do. I guess I wouldn't mind letting a game go in attract mode when I am not playing. But I don't see a point in letting it run all night.

I have configured my motherboard to S3.
Under XP, Control Panel -> Power Options, set system standby to 1 hr.
under advanced - Set Power buttons to both to stand by.

with S3 (Suspend to RAM), I can wake up the cab in less than 5 seconds.

I have only 1 minor problem with this, my Frontend, which I use MaLa, keyboard does not respond waking up.

If I use use XP, and MAME32, it's fine or anything but MaLa.    I guess it's not my XP, keyboard encoder, etc..  I can also use mouse to exit Mala and relaunch..

I prefer standby Suspend to ram. Shutdown and wakeup times are super fast. Both hibernate and suspend can have some weirdness with USB devices if you don't have a powered hub or a motherboard that is set to continue to power USB devices when shutdown. Sometime the computer wakes up and starts running programs before the USB devices have finished waking up which can cause some programs to gag.

I power down.
Running TinyXP and Mamewah, boot up time is about 60 seconds or so.
