Where do I get a box for the Flux Capacitor?
« on: May 07, 2007, 03:00:29 pm »
A buddy of mine is building one of these for his Jeep but we can't find a place to order the box shown in the picture that has the nice rubber molding around the glass.  We think maybe the glass was added after the fact but that rubber molding looks too perfect to not have come with it - any ideas?

Thanks!

I am not sure, but I think you may have a more difficult time finding a good power source to supply 1.21 gigawatts.

Try using the gasket from the rear window of a truck, cut to size of course.

No no, it's Jigga watts.

That compute window kit looks like the ticket.

You want an older style Stalin Fibreglass enclosure like the one listed

http://cgi.ebay.com/STAHLIN-FIBERGLASS-ENCLOSURE-J1210HPL-12-X-10X-5_W0QQitemZ200087453158QQcmdZViewItem

for the window try a computer store like compusa or online modding store for a PC window kit... comes with the gasketing and everything

Given the amount of energy dissipated during a jump, a jeep would get mighty cold without its top. Remember to bundle up nice and warm or put a hard top on that.

A local auto-glass shop will most likely give you that gasket for pretty cheap. I work at a glass shop in jersey and have tons of that stuff laying around.

Is it all steel construction? Plastic or fiberglass body panels might not do the trick.

Thanks guys.  We ordered a "PC Window Kit" for $10 which comes with the rubber molding and the glass.  We also have 3 yellow sparkplugs and a line of LEDs (like christmas lights).  Now all we need is the box to cut the hole in and the three silver looking things underneath the sparkplugs - any ideas?

If you need some nuclear material to power it, I saw some Libyans in a van trying to sell some.  There may be a few conditions attached though.

I got to look at the original one from inside the car in October.  It was very cool.  I even got Doc Brown to sit in the driver's seat and say "roads... where we're going, we don't need roads".

It was awesome.

That's hardcore.  They've spent a lot of time guessing... the original is sitting at Universal Studios.  They could just go see it.  If the place is dead and there's no line, the actor was really cool about us taking a really close look and shooting the crap about it.

Wow, those guys are definitely hard-core.

And Chad, I believe they mention at one point that the one at Universal is not 100% accurate.
Anyways, do you really think they would let you sit in the real deal?

EDIT: here was the comment:
Quote
Gary said...

My Third Aluminum fabrication job on the Delorean were these things. They are accurate to the
movie cars and did you know that the real TCD (Time Circuts Display) IS NOT a square box.
It is actually a little funky shaped bugger that fits over part of the mid-console, NOT on top of it as most
replica Deloreans (including some of the ones at Universal Studios) are set up with. It fits OVER
(both) the Radio and (air) Vents -NOT- above on the dash...
Sure, I just blocked two of the four AC vents in the car, but hey we all must suffer a little pain
for the sake of art...

FWIW, there is plaque next to the one at Universal that says it is one of the (I forget how many, roughly 3-4) X originals used in the filming of the movies.  The guy wasn't letting people sit in it normally, but the place was dead empty, it was like 8:30am and we were the only people within 50 yards.  So he let me and my son sit in and we chatted for a few.  I have at least one pic of my son sitting in it in our vacation photos, I think.  I love going to these places in the lowest offseason.

That doesn't mean dude quoted is wrong, but hey, there was a plaque.   :laugh2:

Having worked on movies with several specialty cars and spending time talking to the crew that makes them, I can tell you that the only reason you normally wouldn't be able to sit in an authentic movie car was if some collector snatched it up before the Transportation department of the film stripped and auctioned off the beat up and tired movie car.  They are no where near as glamorous as you would think, usually they build many and each one is only used for specific shots, it is seldom that one car has all the features highlighted within the film.

You might be able to find a similar metal box at a junk yard or house fixtures and stuff resale store.

I think you could get sets for making "windows" in PC's like that, including the rubber etc. Try to find a shop with PC case modding stuff.

By the way, that one looks too fake with those high-brite white/blueish LEDs. Those didn't exist in 1985 yet......

Nice idea to put one of these near the entrance of your game room. Include the "time circuits" with a date set to around the early 80's and the illusion of "going back" to the golden arcade era is complete :D

LEDs have been around a long time.  There were red ones in the 60s and the rest of the colors came along at various points in the 70s.  They didn't become common in consumer devices until the 80s but if you consider dude supposedly build a time machine, you have to figure he did some pretty beyond the edge stuff in there.   ;D

Unless you made it out of stainless steel it would end up looking like a painted grey cabinet with a food processor stuck to it.

Yes, but those used on the Flux Capacitor repro shown on that pic are NOT leds of the 80's.
Two things are what make them different from LEDs of that time:
1) High-Bright. These LEDs produce LOTS more light than any of the LEDs could in the 80's
2) They're white (or white/blueish IMHO). Those didn't exist then either.

The "real" FC used simple old-fashioned light bulbs....remember, Doc got the idea for the FC in 1955 !!!!

It definitely would have made more sense to use little incandescents anyway.

Maybe you could do something with brushed aluminum instead. Maybe have the sides with full-color movie-themed arwork and the bezel and CP could be covered in brushed aluminum with black details. You could sub out the flux capicitor instead of a standard coin door. I'd think the effect would be better with an 80's cab like Centipede. If you wanted a frankenpanel you might have to bump it up to a gauntlet sized cab.

Brevity is not my strong suit.

If the BTTF pin is any type of template, the sound is where this will really come across.  A lot of BTTF tune snippets, delorean driving sounds, and time machine BOOMs.

Nice, but it's not all that unusual.  Looks like any other cab.  I thought he was talking about a real custom type job.  Maybe I'm wrong about that.

I like the idea of having the Flux Capacitor's on each side of the cab...sorta like the neon rings that some of the fancy cabs have.

Not sure if I'd want them to be original sized or larger.

I do like the brushed metal look.  Perhaps it sould be a Driving themed cab to go along with the Delorean.  (Probably not)

I have too many things boiling around in my head to actually build this but it's fun to think about.

I was thinking a driving cab for sure. That would require at least a partial recreation of the Delorean, though, and that doesn't seem very doable.

Oh, I don't know...have the Marquee be a repro of the Delorian front grill and Logo.

Use some type of metalic siding with a brushed finish.

Some black trim...

And the Flux Capacitors (of course)

I'm trying to tie in the Delorians most notable feature...the wing doors...Perhaps the Bezel or CPO could demo this...(Unless you want to fix real doors to the cab in a "wing-open" state... :applaud:

Hello all,

I've seen some use an electrical enclosure or perhaps a electric meter enclosure.  It's very heavy gauge and gray.  You can buy a 100 or 125 amp sub-panel from your local hardware store for under $25.  You'd have to remove the bus assembly and cut away the front cover to open it up a bit.  A dremel would not be up to this task entirely.  Be careful as there will many sharp edges that can rip you open.

You can get boxes in two styles -

Flush mount, where the box would be installed between studs and the front cover would be flush with the drywall.  The edges will over hang the sides of the box by 1 or 2 inches.

Non flush mount, where the box just has a cover.  Sorta like the one you'd install on a wall in the garage or something.

I'm glad I found this forum.  This is my first post here.  I was given a Frogger arcade by my neighbor and now it's already started taking control of my time.  :)  Having a few problems with it, but that's another thread.

Good luck,

Phil

You'd have to incorporate that futuristic bar-code license plate somehow - or at least the one that said "outatime"

Use some type of metalic siding with a brushed finish.

That's a tall order, even for obsessives like us.

You can apply thin sheet metal using contact cement just like laminate.  If you use aluminum you can even use your router to trim it flush (just remember to use wax lube on the router bit frequently.)  Outside of the cost the biggest difficulty of doing this is that even the smallest speck of dust under the metal will look like a huge shiny bump in the middle of your nice flat surface.  We just laminated several platforms at work using brushed aluminum last week.

As soon as I posted I thought of a potential place for the license plate, and a less blatant name than "Back to the Future" for the cabinet.  Do the Marquee with art based on the license plate and just call the cab "Outa Time."

Yeah! I second that.  Awesome Idea.

Didn't know if you had already seen this one:

Some would say this is expensive, but pretty reasonable for a New Flux Capacitor!!   :laugh2:

Wow, that site about reproducing the flux capacitor is intense. I think a cab repro could afford a few inaccuracy (I highly doubt anyone would notice that the flux capacitor inside the arcade machine uses plastic tubing instead of glass...).

Going with the cab theme, it would be great to put some sort of bright flash (a camera flash maybe) inside or around the flux capacitor. Either when the cab is brought out of sleep or when a game is started, flash the light and play sound clips, to signify the time machine being activated. I think it would be one of those details that really completes the theme.

That's hardcore.  They've spent a lot of time guessing... the original is sitting at Universal Studios.  They could just go see it.  If the place is dead and there's no line, the actor was really cool about us taking a really close look and shooting the crap about it.

Is this the delorean you saw?

I went to Universal Studios in Florida in 1991

And took this picture.

How does that thing even work?

And what do you use it for?

I've never heard of a flux capacitor. Is it game related?

Thanks,

Brent

to be honest i think the initial question is redundant.
