WTB/WTT or photos/dimensions of Hang-On cab controls
« on: April 20, 2007, 12:45:24 am »
I started dissasembling my Hang-On cab. I'm hoping someone here has the parts I need or can get me diagrams/measurements so I can try and fabricate my own.

I appear to be missing a number of parts.
Rubber Handles*.
Accelerator cable.
Entire accelerator/brake assembly (labeled as part HN-511 in the manual.
New harness?

* I figure I can pick up new motorcycle handles at any motorcycle shop (I've got three or four within a four block radius). Let me know if using real motorcycle handles won't work.

The plastic cover is not in the pictures below.

Sacramento, CA.

does the right handle turn to accelerate?  It looks like you have one that only used buttons for acceleration and braking. I could be wrong. My first Hang-on game had solid handlebars. Meaning neither handle turned. The brake is an easy add-on but the accelration handle is more difficult if i recall.
It does look like there may have been a brake handle or something attached to it though.

I'm not sure. According to the manual, there is supposed to be a speed and brake assembly. All I have is the brake handle portion (not pictured). The rubber handle doesn't look like an original compared to the half-way decent photos I could find. It sports a "DeGrip" name on one side and the other states to keep the "^ Flat side up ^" and "Made in U.S.A". The grip texture is nothing like I remember in the Arcades. The other is a plastic handle, but I'm not sure if it's original or not. Doubt it, looks like it was hammered on. The MAWS entry shows the handles that I remember, but it shows an additional red button(?) along with the original yellow.

Apparently, these controsl took a lot of beating in the arcades?

The harness was probably hacked. In the 2nd photo, There are two red molar connectors, the one on the left still has its mate which was hacked off whaterver it was connected to. The ground(?) from it has been shorted to a lead in the right molar connector. Probably a redneck way of setting the throttle to max and let the gamer slow the bike with the brake... lame  ::)

The other molar connector was attached to the start button, with some crappy soldering work. Easy enough fix.

There are also two stray wires with no molar connector, I think these are for the hacked off light bulbs. I figure on replacing them with some fabricated mounts with super bright LEDs.

It's just so hard visualizing what the completed assembly is supposed to look like when all I have are bits and pieces of diagrams and the like.

You are missing a lot of parts which allow the brake and accelerator cable to function properly.   There are two pots which should be mounted under the plastic cover (which you removed) to control them.  On the back of the controller you can see the fan-shaped gear which is used to move the right/left pot.   Well, there are two more gears like this which should be underneath the plastic cover to control the brake and acceleration.

Also, the brake and accelerator cables are metal cables with little balls (little metal cylinders to be exactly correct) on the end.  One ball goes into the brake handle mechanism (which you said you have, so you might be able to understand what I am talking about if you look at the brake handle) and the ball on the other end attaches to the fan-shaped gear.   When you pull the brake handle (ie: apply brake) then the cable will pull the fan-shaped gear, which in turn moves the braking pot.     Same description holds true for the acceleration cable.

I needed a braking cable a long time ago when I first got my HangOn controller and it was a pain to find one which was the correct size.   I believe the brake cables which are used on Super Hang-On, Hang-On and Enduro Racer were all different by the length.   Not sure what size I ended up with.

I will see if I can take some pics for you tonight when I get home ..... but I will not be home until later tonight.

PS: My Hang-On controller accelerates by twisting the right motorcycle grip towards you.  Braking is performed by squeezing the mounted metal brake handle.  I added the two red buttons since I wanted to use the motorcycle controller with other games (ie: Paperboy, etc) which required the use of buttons while steering.

Also, here is a pictrue of my Hang-On controller on my cabinet.  I will try to remove the plastic cover tonight for you and show you what is truely in there ....
