Galaga keeps resettings more details.
« on: April 12, 2007, 09:33:38 pm »
OK so I know for a fact that the machine didn't reset before.  Now it seems to reset about 15 minutes into the game, even if it's just setting there.  It'll reset and if your playing it it will do the same.  when I first got it the back door switch wasn't in its correct housing, in fact I think it was just laying in the cabinet somewhere, so then I put it back in the metal bracket so that the door would make it work, but now it seems as though the thing wants to reset after 15 minutes.  When I first got it I played it for hours without any problems.  Maybe I didn't put a ground on correctly or something.  The two that I have are connected to the monitor chassis.  Am I missing something?

Could be a power supply issue.  Make sure you're +5V is steady and not dropping due to heat or age-related issues with parts.  After that is verified, if the problem still persists, start by reseating any chips and checking connectors, as well as feeling some your chips to check for excessive heat.

It's also helpful to post what game you have, as well as whether it's in an original cab or converted from a different cab.  It's also good to know whether it is running off of its original power supply and PCB, or whether a switcher or JAMMA set-up has been put in....

From Namco and Midway:

Issue:
  • Galaga machine Resets randomly
  • Galaga machine has a yellow tint in a corner

Solution
Galaga can only function properly in an environment where it is loved and appreciated. If your machine exhibits either of these symptoms please, for the love of God, ship the machine to Leapinlew as soon as possible.

The yellow tint is fixed, it just fixed it self, I did noting.  I think I can say the same for the resetting issue also.  Not sure what was going on.  I think it maybe fixed now though, at least I hope, if not then I'll buy me a new power supply from arcade shop and see if that helps.  But all seems fine now.

ahh, so it seems that just my mere presence was enough for the machine to start working.

This time I won't send you a bill, but you really should hug that machine more.

Well maybe I spoke to soon.  It seems as though it will play just fine, and then it will lock up and start to reset.  It will make a loud noise, and then reset.  So what could this be, hopefully it's not in the pcb, cause if so this thing is getting chunked, cause I put so much work and money into the last few weeks, and I don't want the pcb to be messed up.

Are you sure the back door is properly depressing the safety switch. I recently got a "broken" Space Invaders that had a loose back door, and that was the only problem. Rig that switch to stay completely depressed, and see what happens.

Yeah, I thought it was.  I just duck taped it down to make sure.  But I know that it was because the thing wouldn't work at all, if it wasn't pressed.

Well it definitely sounds like a power issue, but it could be a board problem. It could be something as minor as a loose wire. You said that you moved that safety switch back into its proper spot; maybe one of the wires there is a bit loose. BTW, how did it work originally if that switch wasn't in the right spot?

I have no clue, I think it may have just been wedged in somewhere.  Cause I think I had to pull it out, it didn't just come out, in fact I can't even remember where it came from.

I know that one ground wire isn't in the correct place, I can't seem to figure out where it went, I've looked at all of my pics and still can't find it.  Does anybody have pics of where all the grounds go. I know that there is one that goes onto the very back of the monitor chassis, but I can find out where the one goes that has the connects for the monitor.  Thats the one that I don't know where it goes to.

I wouldn't just go and "order a new power supply" without really understanding the problem. You risk fudging something up installing the new one and then you'll really be up the creek, so to speak.

By the way, that back door switch could work even when lying in the bottom, because the switch can also be PULLED OUT. It's a 3 position switch.
NO MORE!!

Did you check the +5v on the board as was recommended earlier? If that is anywhere below 5 then you can get random glitches. Set it for +5.1v and see if you still have the issue. Also, make sure all of the ROM chips are seated correctly. Just examine and press them in. If those things don't work then you may have a bad chip that goes nuts when too hot (after 15 minutes or so). There are ways to check that as well but check the other things first as they are more common.

I have no clue what or where to check the +5v, on the board.  I do have a multimeter.  But I would need to know what, where, and how to check it.  And maybe thats the reason that the switch was just in the bottom of the cabinet, because the metal bracket had been broken possibly  because of this issue, I'll try pulling it out once I get home.

Check for ripple on the power supply. First check the voltage with the meter set to DC, then go to AC and check the AC ripple on your DC power supply. It should be low, like maybe around 10-20 mv.

I believe that the TTL chips are all in sockets. This may also cause problems since the old TTL chips tend to oxidize on the pins and in the socket of the chips. You can pull out suspect ones, and use a pencil eraser to buff off the oxidation, and then put them back in the sockets. I would also suggest using a static strap to avoid ESD.

I concur with checking the +5V as the most likely culprit, particularly if it worked fine before. Also take the chance to clean the connectors.

Also, if you check the Restoration Page in the wiki, you'll find links to my two favourite Galaga troubleshooting pages, both of which discuss random resets.

Well after looking at the board it seemed as if a chip wasn't in place good, and I put it back in place, and all seems to be working fine now.  Maybe it was just one of them things.  I played it about 3 hours  yesterday and nothing, of coarse I played like 30 minutes at a time, and went to clean out the room where my arcade games are going, and then back to playing but i left it turned on, and it didn't reset or anything, in total it was probably on about 4 hours without reseting.
