Section suggestion: Tutorials
« on: March 22, 2007, 07:13:59 pm »
Why not make a tutorial section?
I think it would be nice for beginners (and even pro's maybe :)) to see some tutorials about everything that has to do with building a cab like setting up software, how to mount your stuff to the CP or to mount a bezel, how to fix this and that, etc, etc.
I've already seen a nice one for hacking a 360 controller that would fit nice in a section like this.

Good idea? :)

That type of writeup would be better placed I think in the Wiki.

Maybe, but then there would be no discussion or questions to post.

Saint wrote an 800 page book for this purpose.  It is excruciatingly detailed.  Any and all tutorials, IMO, should be a simple link to the book's Amazon listing.

Well, although the book is very detailed, not exactly everything is covered. Setting up some of the newer frontends and whatnot comes to mind. The book would be of no help there. Or all of the new goodies coming to life with the Led Wiz. There are several thing I could think of that wouldn't be in the book.

Having an entire forum dedicated to tutorials? I don't know about that. Maybe section specific tutorials would be good as sticky threads, like the powerstrip writeup.

While we are on the subject of tutorials... I think it would great if people started throwing some video tutorials up on youtube. Video tutorials are much better IMO. Those could be stickied. Anyway, those are my thoughts.

Things changed since the book came out, and there is definitely a ton of new products out since the book, I'd think would be best covered in the Wiki as mentioned above.

Plus, we're trying to sell a few copies of the book, man.  Sell the book!

Personally, I don't think every single thing to do with this hobby should have a tutorial. The whole point of this hobby is that it is a hobby. It actually takes effort (and frustration) to learn everything. A little effort and searching never hurt anyone.

Another problem I see is when you cookie cut everything, you start to attract the wrong type of people. Newbies are one thing, but others will show up looking to make a quick buck. They'll get everything handed to them up front in a nice package, and then go sell the communities hard work as their own.

I know, but having been in a couple of other hobbies that eventually ended up that way, what you've expressed is the beginning of that movement.  The whole "we did it the hard way so can the newbies" followed by "don't make it too easy or you'll attract the profiteers" followed by a bit of resentment of how much easier the documented paths/new products are than the original ones.

The profiteers have actually come and gone and were eventually replaced by all those really cool innovative products.
