Transporting Cabs question
« on: March 14, 2007, 06:29:26 pm »
Ok, I have searched the threads and have a good idea of the pros and cons of transporting games.  I will be using my pickup and I haven't decided if I will be trying to lay them down or keep them upright (there are two of them).  Normally it would be a no brainer, but I have my camper top on the bed and I don't really want to take it off and reinstall it.  That said, I have about a 280 mile trip, so I am leaning towards removing it and transporting them upright anyway.

I considered using U-Haul to transport them enclosed, but the cost looks to be prohibitive.  I have seen several posts for people saying it's 20 bucks a day.  Yeah, it is, and then they rape you with $.69 a mile.  You do the math for a 560 mile round trip in mileage alone.

Which brings me to my question - does anyone know where is the best place to rent (for relatively cheaply) a U-haul type truck?  Thanks!

You want to transport them upright.

As far as truck rentals go...Try Budget....I think they are like 19 bucks a day (At least they were when I last moved).....Just make sure you bring it back with a full tank!  ;D

Also....try looking at Craigslist....alot of times you can find cheap moving services....a buddy just bought an original Street Fighter II cab on Craigslist for 350.00 and found a guy on Criagslist that went and picked it up and dropped it off at his house for 30 bucks and a 12 pack of beer.

Yeah, I tried budget too.  It seems that all of them want .69 a mile and that is just ridiculous.  I am trying to find an option that doesn't involve a "per mile" fee.  Even if the initial rental is more.

With the exception of cocktails and a showcase, I have transported all of my cabinets on either their backs or sides. Just be sure to check inside for secure mounting and no loose objects.

Oh ... and plan for rain ...

Cheers.

I agree, I have hauled 6 of my 8 cabs on their back, the other two upright because I picked them up at the same time in the back of my little S10.  Like said, make sure everything is secure, and I always take a tarp in case I need it.

Another option may be to get a friend to take you to the cab, then do a one-way U-Haul rental. Then your friend can drive back by himself. Or take a bus to get the same effect without the annoyed friend. That's my two cents.

You aren't going to get 2 normal games in a truck with a camper bed on it. Nor are you going to be able to get two normal games lying down in one truck bed.

Easy answer though, with a single game lay the game down, it is too hard to get a single game stable standing up.

With two or three stand them up, strap them to each other and then strap them down. You are well advised to give them a wrap in cling wrap before travelling if it is going to be a long trip (keeps the open road from damaging them).

Yes, you can. Converted Zaxxon and a huge Dynamo. This is a shortbed truck, too.

Yeah but why is one of them at an angle?

Does it matter?  If it fits, it fits.  I am making the assumption that they made it to their final destination a-ok.

Well, then you are going about the U-Haul thing all wrong. A U-Haul TRUCK cost $.69/mi. A U-Haul TRAILER is a flat fee. You have a truck. I assume you have a hitch. If not, spend $15 and get one, it will probably come in handy again. There you go. Problem solved.

Horseboy, you're a genius, I can't believe I didn't think of that myself.  I guess sometimes I get wrapped around the details.  Looks like I'll be renting a trailer!  Got the hitch already!  Thanks.

Just make sure to check the inside dimensions of the trailers. They still may not be tall enough to stand them up. So, if they aren't tall enough, make sure it is long enough to lay them down.

BTW, you mind telling us what cabs you are driving 600 miles to get?

Correct, and thank you. The Dynamo was MAME'd and is sitting right behind me. The Zaxxon went another 120 miles up to my buddies house. I could get 4 in standing upright, but I had to unload these myself (is that impossible too, Paige?  ;) ).  They're much easier for a single person to unload from this position rather than upright.

No, loading and unloading solo is totally possible. I have drug cabinets up flights of stairs all by myself. I would never consider transporting a cabinet at an angle though, the machines would rub together in an unacceptable manner as far as I am concerned.

the machines would rub together

No doubt. If they rubbed together enough there would be a fire.

The obvious solution if your machines is going to rub during the trip is to haul them during a rainstorm. The rain will both lubricate the machines and put out any fire that may start.

Oh, you're absolutely right, as usual!
I was too embarrassed to post pictures of the mint condition Major Havoc and Quantum I piled in my truck like that. They nearly disintegrated from rubbing together!

Sure,   Actually I am looking at 3 or 4.  They include Zaxxon, Gyruss, Space Invaders, and Galaga.  There are actually a couple of more I am thinking about as well.  All of these are in great shape and the price is right.  Shippping all of them here adds way to much money to the price tags.  In addition, I really do like driving.  Especially this time of year when the weather is getting nice!,  Thanks again!
