Having acquired a copy of the AMI Continental Jukebox Plans by "tteettuk" I thought I should give them a thourough read and review. So here it is:
I wasn't sure if this belonged in hardware reviews or not... it doesn't really fit in there, and more people will probably see it in here anyway.
At first I was somewhat concerned by the marketing tactic on here for them. But having downloaded and read them I can honestly say that there was no need to worry.
They are in fact the most complete set of plans I have ever seen available for any project on here. Not in the standard plan format, but more of a full (and I do mean full) Tutorial for construction of the machine.
Copiously illustrated with literally hundreds of photographs, many of which are dimensioned to enable easy construction. Part 1, running to 378 pages in Microsoft Word format, covers the construction of the machine and all of its finishing and decoration.
I can only say that I'm thouroughly impressed by the dedication and attention to detail. The manual walks you through every single step of the construction process and nothing is left out. Which means that you can build this without fear that you might have problems getting it to fit together.
Detailed lists of materials and parts needed mean that you can cost your project before you get started and it makes it even easier to be certain that can complete it. All in all it makes it feel like a project that anybody who has built an arcade cab or panel could easily do, and be confident about.
To be very honest, I think there are a few techniques and methods in here that could well be applied to Arcade Cabinets and which I have not seen used before. On that basis alone it's worth getting them.
I'm told that Part 2 of the manual details the acquisition of a cheap original Jukebox Mechanism and the installation of the same into the cabinet. I've no doubt that Part 2 is equally as detailed and complete. What I would say is that this is such a nice cabinet that it would be equally at home with a modern PC or an MP3 Player on the inside of it. Perhaps even with a fake Jukebox Mechanism and a rack of 45rpm records.
The end product is a stunningly futuristic looking 1960's Jukebox which has all the appeal of, and a bit more class than a Rockola.
I'm so enamoured of these plans that I'm starting construction of one at half full size... I don't have room for a full size one, beautiful as they may be.
Personally I have no hesitation in recommending that anybody who is even mildly interested in this project, buy these plans. If nothing else they're a damned fine read!!
