Class of 1981 - Ms. Pac/Galaga monitor size question
« on: January 12, 2007, 12:39:34 pm »
I see these Class of 1981 Ms. Pac/Galaga machines all over the place. I like playing them (especially when it's fast shoot Galaga). It looks like they squeezed a 21" into the same cabinet and I was curious if I'm the only one who has a problem with it being too big.

The cocktail is definetly too big. I can't even see everything without panning my head. Anyone else agree or disagree?

Yeah, I first saw one in a Thruway rest stop - the monitor is definitely too big...

19 inch is fine for a cocktail or upright, if you ask me. For modern games, I can see a big monitor.
I'm with stupid.

Namco put 25" monitors in them and that is WAY too big for the cabinet -- it just looks clumsy to me

I can't imagine shoehorning a 25" into my Galaga or Pac cabinets.

Cheers.

What's more disturbing than the monitor size is the audacity to charge 50 cents to play Ms. Pac-Man.

Long live MAME!

Another vote for too big.  It makes it harder to play Galaga too because you can't see your ship as easily using your peripheral vision while looking above at the enemies.

I have played the cocktail and upright, I think the big monitors are great.

I'm building a from-scratch Galaga style cab with a 25" monitor, but I've modified the design to fix some of the sight problems. My cab is  little deeper and taller (inch or two) and the marquee is chopped to 6", which is the big difference. That stock 9" marquee is just too damn tall for the monitor, it cuts off the top of it.

I heard the cabaret ones have a 19 " monitor.  I would love to find one of those on my doorstep >:D >:D

I played one last night and the monitor is too big.  The colors on this one were also bleeding badly.

It didn't look as if they used smoked/grey glass/plexi....  bad choice.

What I did like was that the monitor was a bit more upright, IOW the CP and monitor 'glass' were not in the same plane as was the original.

$0.50 was a rip -  I just played one game of galaga.  My mission was to check out the joystick.... (I'm still in planning stages of my cab(s).)

Most of the reunions have a 25" monitor.  The original 19" monitor wasn't mounted in the same plane as the bezel glass, either - it was angled slightly more towards the player.

I have seen a lot of them being operated at $1, though I didn't play it for that much.  That's just too much for games I have at home.
