It's partway over but there's a show on CNBC right now about the history of Video Games. Thought people here might get a kick out of it.

My wife said there was an interview with the creator of Donkey Kong that I missed...(was on the can)

Good thing I tivo'd the show. I can watch that interview a few zillion times...

He even has a cool name! I'm ashamed that I was not aware of DK creator until watching this show.

Certainly there are arcade history buffs here at BYOAC. I have a question for you...How involved was Miyamoto on the out of control suceeding titles that came from the ole great one, DK? DKJ, MB, SMB, way too many too list. I'm most interested in the 3 I listed though.

EDIT: Come to think of it...I'm pretty sure I remember seeing his name on the credits on alot of suceeding console Mario games! Am I right? Needless to say this show is quickly becoming a great arcade history lesson for me.

He was directly involved with DK, DK Jr, Mario Bros, and Super Mario Bros.

Pretty much from there he started working on console games. He's most noted for creating the Super Mario, Zelda, and Metroid series.

Since he's often credited as "producer" it's hard to say how much he's directly influenced.

BTW, if you like DK/DK Jr, you should try Donkey Kong for the original Game Boy. most people I talk to never played this, but it's the only direct sequel to the Donkey Kong games. This was kind of continued with the first Mario vs Donkey Kong game on GBA too. Mario vs DK 2 seems too puzzle-based.

After reading Shigeru Miyamoto's bio I really feel like I know nothing about arcade history. The game list that he has been invloved in or just straight out created is absolutely amazing! I am so happy about todays history lesson. I vow to somehow, in some way shape or form...launch a collasal and most assidius interactive exploration of that list.

Not if you're playing it back on a computer-computers can handle different sample rates on the fly.

Only if you end up watching it on a 20 year old telly or something - all modern TVs sold in the UK support NTSC as well as PAL, and if someone does have one that won't handle NTSC they could always watch the thing on their computer...

Personally, I use a modded XBox hooked up to the TV for XBox Media Center - that will play any video format I throw at it (AVI, MPG, MKV, whatever you like) - they can be had for peanuts these days now the console's been superceded, and they have decent video out since they're designed to plug into a telly anyway, better than the shoddy video encoders you find on lots of PC graphics cards. And you can run MAME on it.

All the newer standalone dvd players should have no problems playing PAL/NTSC. My 3-year old JVC dvd player works fine, too. Even Nero has some basic features to convert from NTSC to PAL and back, if really needed. Computers can handle all these systems no problema.

It's a 2 hour show. So if you take out commercials... Probably 90 minutes.

I caught this special last night. While entertaining, there are soooo many errors.

The largest one, they said the Sony/Nintendo CD system was going to attach to the NES. They even showed a top-loader.

Actually that's not quite as lame as it seems! .... Although it was never released in the UK or USA The Japanese did have a top loading CD drive for the NES (Known as the Famicom in Japan) and it WAS developed in cooperation with Sony.

I forgot it was on and forgot to record it. DOH! If anyone TIVO'd it or anything, it can be converted to XVid/Divx to make it smaller and someone can host it...

No worries ... keep Melissa carving -- I am dying to see how Daphne turns out (I have been thrilled that my 6YO can now make it to the final level of Dragon's Lair so I can see Daphne anytime I want)!!

Cheffo...the retro collection is awesome! In particular there amongst alot of great videos @ retroblast is one that really brings me back. This 8 yr old kid brought Donkey Kong to the Mr Rogers show. I love it when Mr Rogers trys to get his hands in there to play, and the kid keeps blocking him out. Kinda like...BACK OFF old man, You ain't got no game anyway. Classic, I love the whole thing.

Dude, this was me in 1983. Cept this kid is smarter than me and better at DK...

Region protection is a laugh.Can't believe there are still people around who haven't "hacked" their DVD player to Region 0. In most cases it's just a couple of remote control presses....check out http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks
