Mr. Dug?
« on: February 09, 2010, 03:32:26 pm »
This more of a game history question than anything else.

I've always been a big fan of Dig Dug, ever since I was a little kid.  Different strategies, pretty open format game that gives you hours of replay value.  Good stuff.

I had heard about Mr. Do and seen it in arcades when I was younger, but it looked weird to me.  I assumed it was an odd Pac Man competitor.

But playing it in MAME, it really seems closer to Dig Dug.

Which came first of those three?  And was Mr. Do actually created to be a Pac Man competitor, or a Dig Dug competitor?

Dig Dug came first. (I don't have a citation because I'm just pulling this opinion out of my butt).

Mr. Do is dig dug + tron deadly discs + pac man + pengo

Pac Man came out in 1980, Dig Dug & Mr. Do! both came out in '82, but I believe that Dig Dug was released first (at least it was in all the arcades I frequented).

I agree, I'm actually getting into it.

But the controls don't seem as responsive as I'd like- specifically when I have a monster behind Mr. Do, and I need to whip around and throw the power ball.

Anyway, it's a challenging game to get the max points, so it's definitely fun.

I am curious if Do! or Dug came out first...    :burgerking:

Me and my wife have been having Mr. Do competitions in our house lately (I'm the current high score holder, but that can change at any time).  I'm a complete nerd and looked up some game play video on youtube a while ago, I can't believe how incredible the video was (the guy had some great techniques that would be good to copy):

I also found a video on how to get 255 lives (only on certain versions of the arcade, haven't tried it, but you may want to play around with it):

Just guessing, but I think Dig Dug came out first.  KLOV lists its release date in the US as 1982, and since it's a Namco game, there was always a slight delay in getting them in the US.  Universal (who released Mr. Do) was based in the US, so it would have shown up in the US when it was released.

It really doesn't matter though.  They were released within months of each other, so they were in development at the same time.

Wow that guy is great at Mr. Do!  It looks like you can kind of trap the baddies under the apple if you push it out a little bit over the edge and then wait until there are a lot of them and rack up the points.  I'm going to try this tonight!

This game has so much depth to it. I think its complexity is what kept me from playing it much as a kid. There's a lot to do: dig, throw ball, eat cherries OR kill monsters, push apples, dig under them to make em fall, go for the prize in the middle or not... etc.

The enemies do a lot too for a game of that era: chase, dig, eat apples, even push apples! Impressive for that era.

Here's another cool easter egg:  Making a rose out of a cherry.
What's nice here too is the way the guy makes the apple drop partially into a hole so that he can still shoot the baddies.  I'll need to try that.

I seriously didn't get into that game until like 4 years ago.  Amazing game!  Also note it is at the Maxx (saved by the bell reference).

So many game-play dimensions to Mr. Do.

One of my favourites.
