WG U2000 question
« on: October 31, 2006, 10:52:07 pm »
So I recently picked up a used cabinet that was running a Wells U2000. The red wire coming out if the anode is split into 2 red wires, 1 going to the flyback attached to chassis board and the other red wire is attached to a black plastic box (just dangling) with a black wire coming out the other end (also just dangling loose) which is terminated with one of those O ring ends. If I had to guess I'd say I should just bolt the black wire to the monitor frame but when it comes to fooling around with monitors I know guessing isn't a game I want to play.
BTW if it matters, yes the monitor has recently been pluged in and turned on.

Anyone familiar with this and know what to do?

Picture please. I don't recall a U-2000 with anything like that.

I've got several of those monitors with that same flyback.

Yes, that black wire needs to be grounded to the frame.  It's bleeds off high voltage and if left dangling while the monitor is on will have the same HV potential as the second anode!!

As a matter of fact, if you run the monitor in a dark or dimly lit room you would see a high voltage corona around the end of the wire (but I don't suggest you try it).

The plastic box itself should also be mounted to the frame, it should have a couple of mounting tabs for that purpose.  The mounting doesn't provide any electrical connections, so if the tabs are broken you can just secure the box with a wire tie.

Thanks for the help guys.

Ken if you would still like some pics for future reference let me know and I'll take some and post them up.

So I managed to bolt the wire to the frame and also the box. There was nothing wrong with the mounting holes so I have no idea why it wss disconnected in the first place.

After connecting this and turning the machine on I went to the back of the cab and there is a  very very soft crackleing sound. Is it normal?

D_Zoot, do you use these monitors for mame cabinets? I was just wondering because originally a few months ago I was planning to build a cab from scratch and had actually already bought a JVC tv that many people use here in their cabs. When I stumbled across this cab with the monitor in it and the bezel and everything ready to go I thought I could save myself even more time byy just using it and plus have even a better arcade image. Problem is that so far for one reason or another I've been seeing that this isn't a very good monitor to mame with. So yeah looking for thoughts that might lean me toward using either the u2000 or the tv.

I've typically seen those "boxes" attached to the anode/flyback in gun games.
As D_Zoot mentioned.... it's to help bleed off the voltage after the gun "flash".

I had ordered a replacement flyback for my U5000 a couple years ago and it came with one attached, where as the original didn't have one at all.

As for the crackling sound:
Was there static on the tube?

Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

No,  they are in games out on location.

The topic of using an actual monitor vs. a TV has been discussed often.  Monitors will give you a more authentic picture, but generally require a little more work in the "get it up and running" department.  Do some reading in this web site (check the wiki, this topic should be in there already), search this board and you should find all the information on this topic you need.
