Budget Woody, 2nd cab
« on: June 23, 2007, 04:39:59 am »
Hi guys,

This is my second cab and my first from scratch. It's an Aussie lowboy design.
I built this one for my best friend whom I have known for 25 years. I guess I made it to
celebrate 25 years of great friendship, never had an argument or any issues, just great mates.

Thanks to kneivel for his inspiration i hope to build a real woody one day. Two player, one coin mech. Inside the door is 1&2 coin buttons.
2.1 creative speakers. A 1gig athlon pc and a 17inch 4.3 LCD monitor. ipac2.

Mala is the front end. Home made marquee from artwork off this site.  Also had a small plaque engraved with "Celebrating 25 years of friendship" 1983-2008.

Going to give the cab to him tomorrow at lunch, should be fun. We used to hang around in the arcades in the 80's after work. Such great times.

cheers everyone

Philby :P

Thanks Javeryh,

Appreciate the reply. Aussies are reknowned for their "mateship" I guess were no exception.

philby.

Love your work by the way. dedication to a task is an artform.

Great looking cab.  Looking at the coindoor panel it looks like MDF stained in a wood grain.   Is the whole cabinet made from MDF?   If so it looks like wood to me.  Great stain job.

Thanks BobA, yes it is MDF. I stained with a wood gel. just wipe on. 3 coats of that then 3 coats of wipe on poly.
I like the wood look plus I'd had to please my mates wife!!

cheers

Ok guys, delivered the cab today. loaded her up in the jeep after a quick last minute test. travelled 30 mins, unloaded and give her a test.Doh powers up no display no bios nada!!!! reseat video card and ram still no go :banghead: This wasn't looking good. tried unsuccessfully for 20 mins still nothing. The decision is made to show my friend anyway. He loved it. We fondly chat about the days we played games in the arcades. My wife comes in and says come and have a beer get away from it and come back. Hmmm beer sounds great at this point ::)

Ok back to it, still no go. oh dear this look great. " here you go mate I made you a arcade cabinet, oh by the way it doesn't work!"

Anyways I take out the pc from the cab reseat everything again and bingo she's alive :applaud:
We scroll through playing game after game, just enjoying the memories :'(

So all in all it was a success. It didn't matter if my friend didn't like cause it was the enjoyment of spending the hours, sanding, painting and configuring for him that made it all worth while, all that bought back all those fond memories  of us playing together. It's just just icing on the cake that he loved it. How do you thank someone who has been there for you, guided you and looked after you for 25 years, with a MAME cabinet of course!

cheers

It is hard to tell, but did you put t-molding on it?  Also, what was the first 2 player game you played with your friend?    Excellent job.  Excellent gesture.

Hi coder,

No i didn't t-mold this one normally i would but I wanted a sleek furniture type look, helps with the WAF  both mine and his!

cheers

We played track and field because we used to play that together a lot. He would do the running ( drummer) and I would do the jumping, throwing etc. galaga got a thrashing as well! So not strictly two player games.

Great work! I dig the woody-lowboy look. Like it could blend in in a living room just fine.

I also have an arcade buddy that I've considered building a cab for, although it hasn't been 25 years yet, nor is he as close as it sounds your friend is.

Again, great job.

Philby, you got plans for that bad you could share?

It's a different lowboy design to the ones I've been researching, so wouldn't mind having a closer look at one...

Also, damn nice cab.
