« on: October 03, 2006, 10:37:22 pm »
Hello,
How to clean soldering off the jamma pcb's edge connector ? I tried melting it with a soldering iron and using a cloth but not too much successful because it becomes solid again very fast...

A solder sucker. You shouldn't solder without one. Under $10 at Radio Shack.
NO MORE!!

Yep, or for this typical purpusose, meshed wire may be even better. Don't know it's real English name.

Solder wick.

Also known as desoldering braid. I've only used a "solder sucker" and it's suited my purposes just fine but I know people that swear by desoldering braid too. Either will work.
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

when using the wick you might turn  your iron up just a bit and make sure you pull it out far enough so that you dont melt the plastic holder that it comes in.  The plastic will melt and get in the braid.  Also as the wick fills with solder slide it over as needed..

But use too much heat and you burn the PCB.  That's why for a novice, the sucker is probably a safer option.  Will take longer but requires less brute force heat.

I recently picked up a desoldering iron and I don't believe I'll ever use my solder sucker again. They're about $12 at Radio Shack. Money well spent IMO.

I have one of those... I found I prefer tighter control of the heat surface.  And I never got the hang of using it with only one hand.  Hard to use on anything smaller or larger than the pad size of an average capacitor.

Definitely worth $12 to a person who does mostly monitor cap jobs and the like.  I think I got mine for like $4 when the local Radio Shack was closing.
