MAMEWah w MAME head scratcher.
« on: August 31, 2006, 11:11:33 am »
Alright, In the midst of trying out new FEs I am still trying to get MAMEWah and PowerMAME to cooperate. (Still believing that somehow I can make it work). I am getting much closer. I now have the LEDs in attract mode and coin up from within MAMEWah. I did all my MAME set up from within PM32 which is just MAME32 with many tweeks. From PM32 when I start a game I have full interactivity with the game. All buttons work well and player start, coin up (with LED blink) and all that. Within MAMEwah, I could not get PowerMAME (comand line) to behave at all. JoyMonkey suggested that I launch PM32 from MAMEWah. I did and it worked...BTW I did have to use Joy2Key to get MAMEWah to cooperate. I tried typing the Joystick1_Button4 thing into the MW config but it did not seem to like this. The Joy2Key seemed to work well. Except...
Once a game has been started, I loose total control. coin ups will not work. Tab will not work, buttons will not work. So I grab my keyboard to press tab to see what happened with the mame settings but it wont work either. I am totally stuck. The only thing I could seem to do was CTRL Alt Delete and close the app. So, why would PM32 work fine, but when passed through MAMEWah it fails.
Just an asside the Joy2Key works for the MAMEWah menus and such. But just not when I start a game.

Just for information for your troublshooting heads.
I am using 2-GPWiz 49s with 2 49 way Joys.

I know you realise this but try to avoid using JoyToKey.  I have found devices that do not work with Mamewah, but I reckon you should be able to get your GPWiz's to work.  First just as a check, have a look in your mamewah.log file, and check that your joystick devices are being enumerated...and also take note of the joystick device numbers (may have to enable joystick first if you haven't already, see below).

In your ctrlr file (name & location varies with Mamewah version), check you have 'joystick 1' set under the ### SETTINGS ###, and also 'joy1_x_analog 0' and 'joy1_y_analog 0', assuming 'joy1' is the one you want to use.  Do not enable 'analog' since the analog support can be a little unpredictable in Mamewah at the moment.

Finally just make sure your joys are mapped to some actions, eg:

UP_1_GAME         "DIK_UP

Hey Minwah,
Within the MAMEWah FE (while not playing a game) I can use the joysticks just fine. It is when I enter a game that it hoses me. I will check the settings again tonight.

I had been using the 1.61 because it was the only version I could find the most info about, but I will do as you say (because you ARE the MinWah!)

Thanks
