Dual proc.733mhz/ea. Comp - Mame-ing worth the trouble?
« on: August 25, 2006, 02:18:14 am »
I've recent;y come into possession (for free) of a fairly old  Dell Precision 220 with the following specs:

Dual Processors 733mhz/each
256mb RDRAM
2 SCSI Drives 10GB/each
floppy/dvd/cdr drive
onboard sound
Geforce 256 32mb

It was my boss's old PC 2 generations back.... awesome for it's time.

I have these parts available to put in/replace:

Geforce 4 420 64mb
SBLive sound card
IDE 10, 20 and 40gb Hard Drives (would rather use the scsi for server or a more demanding application)

Now I've read in the "Official" mame pc faq that mame does not benefit from dual core processors.. is this true of Dual processors as well?  Would mame run as though there were only one 733mhz processor?

I originally planned to use an old 1ghz workstation I had laying around for it (HP Vectra vl400).  I upgraded the ram to 512, put the gf4 and sblive in, and Marvel vs Capcom ran somewhat skippy with choppy sound.  This setup also didn't pose very well for my other emulators either, which I plan to run with mame using "maximus Arcade" in my cab... but this is beside the point.

Any opinions?

As far as mame (and your system) is concernced, there is not really any difference between "dual core" processors and Dual processors.

The 1Ghz machine will outperform the Dual 733Mhz machine in Mame. (Assuming we are comparing similar processors, e.g an Intel PIII).
