Thanks for the input guys. A few responses:
You may want to reconsider the 7 button layout.
I actually wouldn't even go with the 7-button layout if it weren't for those few SNES I may want to play down the road (A,B,X,Y,L,R,Select and Start, which will be the regular Start button of course). The select is used very infrequently so I may ditch it - still thinking about it.
Are those two buttons to the left of the first trackball? Because I'd definitely put buttons to the left of each trackball (well at least to the left of the FIRST trackball). I assume you are left handed? You'd either have to use the right trackball for player one or roll the left one with your left hand for games like missile command and centipede. But you probably already know that.
The two buttons to the left of the first trackball are the Atari start cone buttons, not action buttons.
This panel was a bit of a heartbreaker. I originally wanted it to be a two player setup with each player having a full three buttons. Unfortunately, space was a little tight and it ended up being way too cramped and ugly. So I had to ditch one set of buttons (though I'm keeping the left trackball because I really, really like Marble Madness).
So, yes, it is a pseudo-ambidextrious layout. The right trackball is the main trackball for Centipede, Missle Command, etc. The left will really only see play during MM. And I am right handed.
I went with an alternate 7 button setup, like so
o o o
o o o
o
Use the bottom 4 for Neo Geo, and the 7th button also is nice as a "Run" button in the later MK games.
I may give that setup a try. It'll space things out a little more. Are there any other benefits to that layout over the 3-4 layout?
Thanks.
