Moving cabinets up wooden stairs?
« on: July 09, 2006, 08:55:16 am »
I am moving into a new home (well, new to me) soon that has beautiful hard wood stairs going to the second floor.  There is a room up there that would be perfect to be the arcade room, but I am afraid that I will mar the stairs trying to drag my arcade cabinet up the stairs on a hand truck.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the cabinet up there without damaging my stairs?  I have seen those stair climbing hand trucks before, but I'm not sure if they will prevent damage to finished wood stairs like these, or if they only really work on carpeted stairs and rough wood stairs where marks aren't as apparent (like on the porch).

More hands ...

I bought my brother-in-law a GT2K cabinet (in a std Dynamo) last year and moving it down his beautiful hardwood stairs took four of us to do "safely" (for the stairs). OTOH, I have moved every one of my cabinets down the concrete stairs to my basement by myself (with a handtruck).

Get more hands ... if there is room on the stairs for them.

Cheers.

Get one of those quilted "mover's blankets" to lay down on the stairs to guard them from incidental scuffing, etc. Have spotters to make sure the blanket doesn't bunch up and cause additional problems.

How about an appliance dolly?  I rented one to move my fridge downstairs and it worked like a charm.  The appliance dollies roll on softish belts like automotive belts so there would be no metal touching your stairs.

The movers I had were very cool helping me with my cab upstairs.  they decided it was best to hand-carry it and it worked out although it took their 2 strongest guys + me protecting the wall.   They had no problem with sofas, piano, refrigerators, etc but the cabinet on the stairs almost killed them.

(I let them play it for a while at the end of the day haha)

For those of you thinking "they're all the same, what's he talking about?", here's a pic of what he's referring to.  If you'll notice, the upright black "ovals" on the backside of the dolly are simply belts that let you pull stuff up the stairs.  If you get a mark from the belt (HIGHLY unlikely, but can happen), simply get a tennis ball and rub off the mark.  Problem solved.
