Mala & Mamewah
« on: June 19, 2006, 02:21:57 pm »
I am setting up a mame cab using a Arcadevga, Jpac ,neogeo cab and 1.5Ghz P4 PC with 512MB.
Ive loaded the roms onto a freshly installed Windows ME install. Ive installed Mame086 (this is the complete rom set I have) but cant decide whether to use Mala or mamewah.
Ive used mamewah in the past with another mame cabinet but that cab had a pc monitor so resolution wasnt a problem.
It sounds that Mala is easier to setup (all windows gui) while mamewah seems a bit harder (I had trouble last time). However I read somewhere that the arcade monitor im using would be best to handle 640x480. Ive looked at the mala layouts and they all seem to be at a higher resolution than 640x480. However, the mamewah standard layout (I prefer this as I used this before and I think it looks good) is 640x480.

What would u suggest I do?

I believe MameWah layouts can be used in Mala ..... I believe there is a MameWah converter program at Mala's homepage (under layouts) which can convert them for you ....

I decided to go for mamewah as I can get a constant 640x480 on it. Also if I imported the layout into mala then I lose the jpgs that include the mamewah logo.
All setup now and showing snapshots of my complete list of games. However I have a couple of new problems:

1. Is there a way to get rid of the copyright screens (the ones like shows you if sounds implemented and get rid of the type ok thing). I just want it to seem more arcade real.

2. Doesnt matter what game I load, it just seems like mame (using mame067 which is what romset I got) takes at least 20-30 secs for the rom to load before the acknowledgment screens load (see above). What is wrong?

Cheers

For the record (for other users) Mala and the layouts can be fixed to 640x480 (see attached screenshots)

Weird, Are you sure you copied the jps to the layout directory after conversion?

Are these set in mame.ini

It appears so. You can make a 'fixed' layout of 640x432. Then you can get MaLa to match it. See attached screenshots.

I am not in a position to test this any time soon.

Have a go. MaLa is very quick to set up.  Let me know how you go.

Thanks for the heads up!  I may give it a shot.  I've heard many good things about it.

MaLa supports any resoluion provided by your video card. I run MaLa with a resolution of 386x240 on my cab (avga).

And for the layout stuff:
If a layout is a so called scalable layout you can use on different resolution. For example a layout created for 800x600 will also run on 640x480 or 1024x768.
