Ok, now I'm having a problem that's going to make me look like a complete idiot. Could we possibly skip all the newbie taunting that runs so rampant and almost every other message board on the 'net?

I downloaded MAME32 a couple times now and I can't get the damn thing to load on my computer. I've unzipped it and even tried redownloading. I've used other emulators before and have never had this much trouble. Can someone out there help?

Don't worry, we'd be happy to help. Everyone was a Newbie at one point, y'know.

In order to help, though, we,d need a little more info. When you say it won't run, at what point does it cause you an issue? Will MAME32 not load up at all, or is it when you try to load a game?

seriously tho, more info. Maybe post your text mame.ini

Let us know your rom directory (e.g. C:/mame/roms)
your mame.exe directory (e.g. C:/ArcaneJunk/emulators/mame/mame.exe)

and stuff like that.

also what operating system are you using, what version of mame, what version of roms, etc?

Timoe, If he is using MAME32 is the INI necessary? This sounds like more of a comand line MAMEWah type thing.

you should be able to unzip the download. Keep all the folders inside the MAME32 folder

If you want to make a shortcut for the exe this is fine.

Place all your leagally obtained ROMs into the ROM folder.

You should be good to go. MAME32 should handle the rest.

PS... If you decide to use 49 way joys or LEDWiz use PowerMAME32.

Ah, good point (mame32). But copying the text from the ini is the only way to know what options he's selected from the GUI. Yes?

Thanks for all the help. I'm glad to see that (at least) some of you aren't like the ---daisies--- on pretty much all the other boards I've been to in the past.

I think I wasn't descriptive enough in my original post. I can't even install MAME on my computer. I have no idea what the problem could possibly be.

Well you're still not descriptive enough. What exactly happens when you run the self extracting executable and install MAME32? Are you getting an error msg?

Absolutely nothing happens. That's why I'm so confused.

Could someone out there send me a link to where you got your version of MAM32? I'd like to try to download iot from a different site. Maybe there was something wrong with the server ... or maybe I did something wrong somehow ... I don't know ...

If you click the icon, and then nothing happens, you might have a bad download (guessing)...try downloading again from the site cdbrown suggested.

We're not trying to be difficult here...but "nothing happens" doesn't give us a lot to go on...try downloading again, then installing, and let us know what happens.

We'll get ya fixed up...

True...true... Sorry to sound cliche, but...

When you download the zipped file, and you open it, is there then a few folders and a couple of other bits and pieces?

Are you using a Mac?

If you do have stuff in the unzipped folder and you are not using a mac, look for the mame32.exe
It does not go through an install like MS Word where you go to an install screen and you see files copying and stuff, it is more like you just start a program and it goes and that is it.

Success!!! .... well, sort of. I got the MAME program to work, but now I'm having problems with the only ROM I have at this point. I downloaded WWF WrestleFest from romnation.net.

God, I suck at this.

Could someone reccomend some good ROM sites, while I work out my lastest setback?

Also, I know I am VERY far off from this, but will other emulators work in a custom MAME cabinet?

Asking for rom download locations is against the rules... I believe the site you have now is probably fine (I never used them). Better chance that you are missing more files.

In mame32 there is a way to audit your roms (right click on the game?? under properties??) this will tell you if your missing more files. I bet your missing the parent rom. Parent roms are usually the latest version of a game. Then there are child roms with only the changes from the parent roms (usually much smaller because one version of a game to another they only make small changes)

btw, you might want to spend some time at easyemu (www.mameworld.net/easyemu I believe). GREAT site to answer all questions (other then rom locations)

Being a noob is one thing. Being a noob who hasn't read the FAQ, or the rules, and wanting your hand held through something as complex as mame cabinets, roms, an mame32 is entirely something else.

What you need to do is do a lot of reading. Not a little, and not just what other people are posting. There is a lot of trial and error with this hobby. Coming on the board and saying "Mame32 not working - help!" doesn't do us any good at all. Promoting illegal activing? Also not good! You can't come on here and ask for roms. It says it in the 3rd post thats a sticky. Check the FAQ and come back with some intelligent questions and I'd gladly help.

Call me an ogre if you want, but the method you are pursuing to become informed on this hobby is going to be much slower than actually doing some reading on your own.

Try to find a common game for starters make sure it works. Then try for the more obscure stuff.

As to leapiniew's remarks...Yup, there is a ton to read. Kiss yer family n kids goodbuy for a while and start to pour through the docs. Then you will be strong in the Fu.

Yeah,
I've been reading anything and everything, messing around in software, buying loads of used crappy arcade stuff, all for the last few months.
After all of that, I am still a newb that knows next to nothing.

This means that you have a LONG way to go.
This hobby is my best friend and my mortal enemy at the same time.

A few tips from someone fresh in the game for a newb such as yourself:
Don't post a new thread about a very general question.
Always try several searches here and on google before posting new thread.
Don't get cocky and insult people whom you may need help from later on.

And lastly, (from personal experience) no matter how experienced you are on other forums, that don't mean jack on here. You are still a newb.

I've realized that I apparantly jumped the gun, if you will. And for that I'm sorry. I just got a little over excited aboutmy new found hobby. But in my defense, I did read the FAQ and the EasyEmu site. When I originally installed MAME32 nothing happened. Literally. I installed it, and there were no folders, no files, no MAME, no nothing. But I have sinced worked that problem out, thanks to the help of all of you. (I just want to say thank you to those of you who were nice enough to help me out)

Also .... I didn't think I was insulting anyone. I'm not sure how anything I said could be taken as an insult, but if someone does feel that I've insulted them, then I'm sorry for that too. And as far as my mentioning other boards (and the topic of this thread), that was just a joke. I was making fun of all the people who give the newbies ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- just because they're new.

So now I'm off to study up. I'll try not to bother anyone with questions like this unless I absolutely have to.

But one more thing before I go. I didn't know that you couldn't ask for ROMS here. That was my fault. I should have read the rules. Again, I just got a little over excited. But is it ok to ask about my virus conerns about downloading ROMs?

Make sure to put your legally obtained ROM in the ROMS folder, where you installed\unzipped Mame.

I don't think that shardian was saying that you insulted anyone here, he was stating some good rulz for noobs.

Enjoy the excitment, this is an awesome hobby, labor of love, addiction whatever. It is why we are here too. One day you will read a post from some poor noob and you too will say... "listen here lad, Yer a Newb! so READ!"

As to the ROMS, you hit a hot button. As you may or may not know, It is not legal to posess ROMs you do not own. Thus, not a good topic to discuss on this board. If the topic comes up and is discussed, the great and powerful Saint will part the clouds and come in wooshing in on wings of little birds and strike lightning into the evil thread and cast it into the place that threads dare not speak about. POST HELL!

I learned early on, you can't take anything said personally. Also, after you've been here awhile, you'll see the same questions posted over, and over, and over, and while it's understandable, many of the folks here (not me) have gone to considerable trouble to put together FAQ's, Books (Saint's Project Arcade book...

, is the best thing a newb can do for him/her self), and many walkthroughs.

Plus it's a little like an initiation (Thank you sir, may I have another).

I've been posting here for almost a year, and on another board for about the same time, and I'm still a Newb....

But the majority of these folks are great, and will be more than willing to help....after you've done a little searching of the forums, or FAQ's.

And, asking about ROMS, will get you more grief than it's worth (THAT part you gotta figure out for yourself)
