Looking for a good, cheap skt939 mobo for overclocking
« on: June 16, 2006, 05:46:13 pm »
Finally getting a new PC soons. Building myself. I know I'm going to use an Athlon 64 3800. From what I've heard, it can be overlocked from it's 2.4GHz to 2.7 and higher. Anyone know of a good, cheap board to do this with? Needs to have PCI Express x16

I just got an ASUS A8N5X from Newegg for like 75$ and love it.  For quietness I did replace the northbridge chipset cooler with a heatsink.  Works great with XP and Vista so far (2 days.)

I just realized AM2 isn't much more than 939. Anyone know of a good AM2 overclocking board?

Have you seen the Toms Hardware Guide article where they got a $130 dual core Pentium to 4GHz?  Awsome stuff!  They now have a sequal article on building a complete 4GHz watercooled system for about $720.

Holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---! Nevermind to AMD alltogether. I just read through the Tom's Hardware Guide. Only problem is, I can't find the lower model motherboard they recommends. The ASRock one.

I read that Pentium article a while back, it looks like a sweet deal if you find a good chip.

If you want to go AMD, I'd recommend going with an Opteron 144 for a s939 chip.  Those things are overclocking beasts if you find a good one, and nice ones can be had for good prices used now.

I haven't read much on how the AM2 chips are overclocking though.
first off your and idiot

Man I love the internet, haha.
