Celeron D 345 3.06Ghz as a MAME Brain?

Specifically MSI PM8M-V Socket 478 / Intel Celeron D 345 3Ghz/ 512MB DDR PC3200

How would this rig fare for a mame computer?

Thoughts?

I am not an expert but it would be just fine. In fact it would be overkill.  From what I have read, even the most demanding games would work with this set up. There are several QandA sections that you might want to look at.
    This question is asked so often that nobody will respond. There are only a few games that will play between an old computer and a new one. The money you spend on a better system dont comnpare to the added games from a Pll to a p4.
     If ya want to play CP games also then we have a whole other story.

You're thinking Windows games performance. Almost all those advantages are lost with MAME - it only relies on CPU cycles. I think Tore is basing his bias on the old Celeron performance. I believe they have upped the cache and optimized it a bit since then.

If you're really wanting to save money and want to skip the Celeron, go AMD - you'll get more for less...

Thanks for correcting me, forgot about that issue. Im just seing black each time someone wants to buy a Celeron.

Here in Norway at least, you can get a Intel Pentium 4 506 (2.66 GHz) for around 110 dollars, and a Intel Celeron D 326 (2.53 GHz) for around 60 bucks. There isn't a big leap between them, but if your on a tight budchet, celeron is maybe the way to go.

Nearly double the price is a leap for most people.  Do you get nearly double the processing power by going up to the P4?

I have been an AMD guy forever, and I never buy Intel--buy this combo came up cheap on a web site and I thought I would glean the knowledge from my fellow mamed retrogamers.

I feel like the Celerons are just plain gutless, but I have never owned one. I have had good luck with AMD in the past and the price point is usually too good to miss.

BTW that combo was $150.

I have a P$ (2.4g) that I built 4 years ago and I like it.  Around Christmas, I built an AMD for my son and a Celeron 3.06 as my MAME machine (sounds similar to what you are doing).

My suggestion is, if you can find a comparably priced AMD, go that route. The Celeron will work, but it is my least favorite.

You can find some really good bundles for a name-brand mobo and AMD cpu.
