DUAL MONITOR SUPPORT implimented!!!!
« on: March 21, 2003, 11:32:40 pm »
Decided to go with VMJ version 4 beta...I hopefully will have alot of the "major" features implimented over the weekend...but for now, I've got the dual monitor support in place....there's an option in the settings screen to turn "dual-monitor support" mode on....when two monitors are installed and supported using a dual-monitor video card...all video and lyrics will be displayed full-screen in the secondary monitor while the primary display will retain focus to select and browse through albums in VMJ.

Go ahead and play with it and give me your feedback.

I downloaded your file from the link in your post.  I ran it and got the following error.

Run-time error '339':
Component 'MSFXGRD.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid

I don't have a dual head card.  I do have a card with TVout that I think I can set up as dual display though.  Your program no workie. For me.  I use xp pro with service pack 1 installed.

Dual Monitor support doesnt seem to work on my card.  I am running gforce 4 4200ti.  It is a duel head card.  VJ shows the dual head option greyed out when I go to select it.  If I go in to vj config file and manually make it true it still doesn't seem to work.  It seems that nvidia uses software called nview to control duel head cards and how they work in windows.  There are tons of options.  So this may be whats up.

Also on beta 4 none of my songs play.  I have autoaccept on and no dice.  VJ 3 works a-ok.

I also notice when using 2 monitors on VJ 3 that the albumn artwork deforms.  Albumns become more wide than tall.  Also with both 4 and 3 the area that usually displays track lists falls right in the middle of the two monitors.  This makes reading this area extremely difficult.

I will be happy to do any testing you need on nvidia based dual head cards.  I'm sure it is just a driver issue.  Anything I can do to make VJ better let me know... I'm also in NE Ohio if you want to grab a Beer :)

I figured that there would be different issues with different cards...Generic Eric, you need to download and run the setup program to get all of the necessary files.

http://www.virtualmusicjukebox.com

Since I don't see myself going out and buying each and every dual monitor card...I'll have to rely heavily on your feedback to get it working on your specific card.

I have a radeon 7500 that seems to work OK (well, I programed the features around my card)...anyone else have a 7500 or 9000 series card to test on?

Forgot to ask...does everyone have TWO monitors INSTALLED in the display settings of windows...or are they just running two monitors at the same time showing the same screen display...if two monitors are being uses and only showing the same display on both....VMJ will not support this.  Two monitors must be installed in the Windows display settings...so each monitor can support its own display.  Please let me know, this will help to debug.

I completely understand about buying cards.  I would like to help you get nvidia cards working if possible.  When you have the time to work on this email me directly.  I am registered VJ owner Jim Kennedy.

Later today I will do some more testing and see if changing different options in the nvidia drivers (nview) will have any effect on VJ.

Any idea why songs don't play in beta 4 for me?  Is there some more info I can send you to help?

I think I found out why the songs aren't playing...I updated my Windows Media player with the current version and I'm experiencing the same...try reverting back to the older msdxm.ocx file or reinstalling VMJ from the setup program...

I just tried VJB with two seperate video cards. The main one is a generic AGP card supplied by Dell. The second one is a Radeon 7200 PCI card (Which also has S-Video out)
The Video's play great (with sound). But... now none of the Mp3's play. They queue up but the track duration counter doesn't move. Sooooo close. Also depending on the resolution I use on the second screen gives me choppyness(New word) in the video. Get the bugs out and WOW.
I also would be more than happy to test any setup with the equipment I have. (P.S. tried mulitple OCX versions)(no change)

It appears that alot of people have been reporting the same problem (sound not playing)...so far, the only thing I can link together, is that everyone experiencing this problem has ripped their mp3 at a bitrate higher than 128 kbps...if this is the case...unfortunately, Windows Media player control is to blame and I cannot do anything (I plan on changing to another control very soon , maybe even this weekend)...if the tracks are 128 kbps and still do not play...if I can get ahold of one of the mp3 files to try to duplicate it...all of my tracks play and I can't duplicate the problem.

The choppyness (new word) may be attributed to the card...I believe the 7200 is a 32 meg card (could be wrong)....videos play very smooth on my second monitor and I'm using a 64 meg card....again, videos are currently being played through the windows media player...this will change soo as well.

I'll try to impliment a new audio/video control this weekend...or very soon!

Ya The Radeon card is 32MB. But 90% of my songs are 128 kbps. I don't notice a big change in anything higher and they would take up more hard drive space. Even after removing the Radeon card. and unslecting dual monitor mode.  mp3s still won't play on 4.0
How about Active Movie Player?

Here's a little more info on what I did.  Maybe this will help.

I have VJ3 up and running wonderful.  No issues.  I downloaded the install program and the vj4beta.  I ran the install, selected to install to a new directory (c:\program files\vjbeta).  Then I replaced the exe with the vj4beta exe.

When I run vj4... no sound.  track timer stays at 00:00.  When I run vj3... no issues.  Same mp3, same data source, same ms media controls, same pc.  The only difference really is the different install directories.  Could having 2 versions of vj installed on one pc cause some sort of conflict?

OK, I fixed the problem with music files not playing:

http://www.cybertechdesign.net/software/Virtual%20Jukebox.exe

I did notice some more bugs that I'll be working on...I just wanted to get this out there for people to start testing.

If the "Dual Monitor" option is greyed out in the settings screen, that means that only one monitor was detected on your system.  You need to go to the Display control panel settings tab and enable a second monitor (if your video card supports it).

I'm off to take a look at using other controls and add Kareoke file support (now that 2 monitors can be used).

I am new to this, so forgive me, but what exactly would one want 2 monitors on their jukebox for?  I am planning my design for my jukebox and don't want to discard this idea and wish I had taken advantage of it.

Thanks.

So videos and song lyrics can be displayed on one screen while the jukebox selection interface can be displayed on the other.

I'm setting up a dedicated machine for this, and this is the first time I have messed around with dual monitor support.

Surfing Ebay, I found this card, any ideas if it would work with this application, it seems pretty easy and the price is right as well...

Well, Andy......hate to burst your bubble, but I really dont think this card will be very good for the application.  If you notice, it only has 4MB of video memory.  You can get a better card with like 64MB memory (with dual monitor support) for like $50.

Check out any Nvidia card with a feature they call "TwinView" or the latest version called "nView".  That means it will support dual monitors.  The "second monitor" may be a s-video output or something.

My current card is a Ti4200 (128MB).  It has one normal 15-pin VGA output and a second DVI output.  They oncluded an adapter plug for me to turn that DVI output into a second 15-pin VGA, so I am all set.

Hope that helps,
Fat Johnny

Cyber would it be possible to add the windows media player light show to the secondary monitor. I only have a few videos and I don't plan on using lyrics. This would be a neat alternative to a blank screen.

I wouldn't expect much from it. But if all you're doing is VMJ then it should be ok. Just don't try UT or Quake on it ... ;)

I think I'll give it a try.  For $20 what can I lose.  Its a dedicated Jukebox so I have no real needs for a powerful video card.

If it doesn't work then I'll bump up to the Radeon 7500.

I have had many requests for a screensaver or visualization effect in the second monitor (dual monitor) while music is playing...the Windows Media Player control that I'm using does not support visualizations...I have found many audio and video controls out on the market, but still cannot find one that supports audio, video, eq functions, and visualizations all in one...if anyone knows of one, please send me a link so I can develop these features.

filenabber, did you have any luck using two monitors on your Matrox G400 Dualhead  card?  Please let me know if you need any assistance in setting up VMJ.
