Mario Bros Custom CP

Here is a rough draft of the mario bros CP I am working on for my wide nintendo cabinet.

I got the characters from localarcade.com, but they were not vector (other than the fighterfly).  I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on cleaning up the black portions of the characters.  I'm pretty useless when it comes to photoshop, I was suprised I ended up with what I did...

maybee not really helpfull, but taken from the bezel, here's one more vector character.
