SlikStik Illuminated Ball Top Handles
« on: April 13, 2006, 10:53:29 am »
I just got one of these for my HAPP Super joystick in 4 way mode.  I got the blue one.

My CP has HAPP translucent blue buttons and trackball, all wired to super bright LEDs powered from a lead from my computer's PS.  I also use an IPAC2.

Overall this is a pricey but very cool addition to my CP.  Was VERY easy to install and hook up to my IPAC2.  I did have to move one of my existing wires that powers my Atari volcano buttons but the IPAC2 has 2 different 5 volt pins so that only took about a minute to fix up.

The way the power hooks to the joystick is very smart and the "loop" piece was a snap to install onto one of the screws holding the cherry button in place.

Biggest problem was after I installed this, the joystick would make some banging noise and feel like it slipped off a track or something.  Turns out the distance between the C clip and the restrictor wasn't large enough.  It was like the groove that the C clip goes into should have been slightly closer to the joystick top than it was.  This was pretty disappointing since I was so excited to try out my new stick.  I went out to my garage and found one washer whose hole was large enough to accomodate the joystick shaft.  I installed this between the C clip and the restrictor and that did the trick!  No more "slipping" or banging.  Now the stick works very smoothly.

SlikStik should either include a washer/spacer like this or adjust the groove to prevent this sort of problem.

Also worth noting the ball top is pretty bright.  I've got 3 super bright LEDs shinning through my trackball and each button has two LEDs pointing at each other in the base of the button, but this joystick ball is brighter than any of them.  I don't really consider this a problem but I was surprised how bright this thing is.

Cons:
-Pricey
-Ball is white when not turned on
-Ball is smooth, some texture would be nice
-Had to add a washer that didn't come with the unit

Pros:
-Easy to setup
-looks great (and isn't this what it's all about!)
-Very prompt delivery

Any pics of how this thing works? What the wiring and LED looks like? I'd like to try and make a 'homebrew lighted stick.
