New Product: Electric ICE-T
« on: March 26, 2006, 01:43:07 am »
Coming very soon......

GroovyGameGear has been lacking a trackball offering, but no more.  In true GGG style, we weren't content to just slap a new name on an existing product.  We wanted to offer a better trackball, with higher performance and ultimate "bling" appeal.  The Electric ICE-T

sign me up for a 3"  The 2 1/4 is that just an upgrade kit to convert an existing trackball or is it the whole trackball?  Will it work with an optipac also, just curious?

WOHHHH! Randy does it again..... He's going to burn himself out, if he keeps releasing new products at this rate. So Cool.  :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

Randy, are you going to be offering just the 3" Translucent ball itself as a product or will these just be available as a complete trackball assembly??

Best Regards,

Thanks.  It's one I have thrown around for a while, but always ran into parts sourcing problems.

Kremmit gave me a push to give it another go and it worked out for us this time.

Randy,
What is the texture like?  Smooth I would presume.  I'm sure that question is going to come up.  Otherwise, does it feel identical to a typical trackball?

The texture is very smooth.  It took extra measures (and cost) to ensure this.

A typical trackball is very slick and "glassy", at least when new.   These do not feel exactly the same as the material, while polished, doesn't get as shiny.

These balls perform wonderfully.  They track perfectly and are very comfortable to use.

Sorry, the balls will not be made available separate from the upgrade kits.   They were not inexpensive and our inventory is limited, so they have all been allocated for the units and kits.

What are the differences between this trackball system and a Happs USB translucent backed up with a Glowire laserLED (http://www.glowire.com/Lazer%20LEDs.htm)? Is the texture different? The "translucency"? The bearings? Ease of installation?

I have this system installed on my rig, and it is very bright in daylight.

I like to see how this stuff evolves, so I am grateful to see new stuff. It looks like a great buy if you already have GGG hardware in place. Otherwise, it looks like a "we have a trackball too". Please specify...it looks like it would be a purchase consideration in regards to building a new rig and having everything (lighting, opticals, etc) in place up front, but I'm not clear on the differences.

You don't need any other GGG hardware "in place" to use this product.  It's plug and go.

2.5 times the resolution of any other trackball due to upgraded stainless steel encoder wheels.

Uses a high-output RGB lighting module for pulsating and color-changing FX (when used with an LED-Wiz, otherwise can be hardwired to the color of your choice and changed at any time...even with manual switches if desired.)

Your trackball acts like a spherical lens and blows a lot of light through the top.  All that light on your ceiling belongs in your trackball.   This one captures the light, not transmits it.

And, IMHO, the units you linked to offer pretty limited "bang for buck".  They are just 4 monochromatic LEDs in a housing.  There is little to compare to there.

Still look like a "me too" product to you? :)

In what sense?  If you mean just spinnning the ball rapidly and holding up over time, yes.  In fact, it's likely that the rollers will hold up longer as well.

Uses a high-output RGB lighting module for pulsating and color-changing FX (when used with an LED-Wiz, otherwise can be hardwired to the color of your choice and changed at any time...even with manual switches if desired.)

Is there more info about this "RGB-Overdrive™ Trackball Lighting module"?   I read the first post early this a.m. when you posted it and I (like rwhip41) thought I'd need the LED-Wiz to control the lighting.

As I re-read the description, I now see the part that says "Can also be hardwired to 5v and manually configured for color." but that sentence is part of the bullet pointed feature of  "LED-Wiz™ compatible lighting."   I'd consider the ability to use this withOUT the LED-Wiz to be as much (or more) of a "feature" as the ability to use it WITH the LED-Wiz.

Beyond that, can the RGB-Overdrive lighting module be manually configured for "any" color or only basic ones?   You mention 'manual switches', but is it safe to presume there is some kind of software that will allow me to pick a certain color or shade?

Very cool item, Randy.  Coming up with a 'colorless' trackball that DOESN'T act like a big lens is a long time coming.  Glad you brought it to us  :applaud:

I like that. I'm also not a Glowire homer, but my 4-LED set really shines. Your system must really be bright if it outclasses the 4-LED set. I also like the "light capturing" versus the "light transmission" aspect, which probably helps in its illumination.

Thanks for making it more difficult to make hardware component decisions for my next cab.  ;)

Ver Very cool!

Now for the trackball as a trackball quesiton.  You mention it has 2.5x the resolution of a normal trackball..

Is there problems with rollback?  Can you swing at it as fast as you can without troubles?

I would love the upgrade, but now I'm thinking I would rather upgrade my old used trackball if I was going to do anything.

Also, you said it takes +5volts to add the glow right?  Could I get away with grabbing power from a usb connection to power them?

First off let me say you are the best.   :notworthy:  I noticed in a previous post that you said you would have some other trackball parts.  I was wondering what those might be.  I'm in need of some new rollers and idler for my Imperial 3" trackball.  I'm going to order some encoders and other stuff from you and would rather get everything from one place.  Thanks once again for your great products!   :applaud: Can't wait to see what you come out with next! :o

Hi Randy,

I currently have a 3" Happ trackball. Would this kit work with it? If so I want a 3" conversion kit. That doesn't even sound good...

Hey Randy, you're out of control. Next month I'm expecting a star wars yoke.

By the way, I don't consider "retina-searing light output" a positive. ;-)

Hey Randy, you're out of control. Next month I'm expecting a star wars yoke.

If I was going to do something like that, it would be functional, but probably not look a lot like the original.  That would probably make it go over like a lead balloon, so I'm shied away from it :)

By the way, I don't consider "retina-searing light output" a positive. ;-)

With all of the LEDs activated (white) it's like looking at 12 high-output LEDs crammed into a less  than .5" diameter.  I was seeing spots for too long after looking at the thing.

But you need that kind of output to light-up a ball that size, so it is a good thing.  BTW, a 2 1/4" ball lights up even brighter than the 3" in the demo ;)

Beautiful...
This isn't going to do anything to improve my Millipede scores though.  I'll be staring at the ball the whole time. LOL

If so I want a 3" conversion kit. That doesn't even sound good...

Haha, I can just see my conversation with my wife:
"Honey, good news!! I just got a new ball and a 3" conversion kit!"

This is very very cool.  I'm not even that interested in changing colors (I'm just a sucker for a blue-lit trackball I guess), but I'm very interested in a better lit solution as opposed to the spotlight effect normal translucent trackballs create.

I just may have to get an upgrade kit for the ball itself.  Nice work as always Randy.

Uses a high-output RGB lighting module for pulsating and color-changing FX (when used with an LED-Wiz, otherwise can be hardwired to the color of your choice and changed at any time...even with manual switches if desired.)

Is there more info about this "RGB-Overdrive

Man if someone could come up with a hack to change the color of the ball to the color of your bowling ball in world tour bowling to indicate whose turn it is, it would totally rock.

I'll try to look through the trackball games and see how many I can find that this could work with.   I know there is a shuffle board game where the puck changes color with each player.

I believe that would be shuffleshot.  Also this would work for golden tee since the players change color.  I think once you figure it out for one of these games the other 2 would fall right into place since they all use the same driver(itech32).

The first thing to do is to hook the 5v line up to a 5v power source (this will pull 240ma, so be careful where you get it from.)

Will a GPWiz be able to handle this load? It would be the only "lit" device drawing power on that control panel, and will also have your spinner with an optiwiz, as well as a usb joystick...

No! Not a good idea.... Hook it to a PC drive cable power lead.

Actually, it all depends on what else is on the port.  USB is rated at 500ma so *if* the only thing you have on that port is the trackball and maybe 1 other interface, you could even tap into the 5v going to the TB interface to run the light.

Keep in mind also that the 240ma is the figure for full-on, or white.  If you are running it red or blue or even a combo for a different color, current requirements will be quite a bit less.

But you can get the new Trackball with the LED's in a kit for not to much more then getting just a translucent Trackball.

Oops - I'm combining control panels. Actually, I will only have the Optiwiz, no GPWiz on that panel. Plus, I am looking at running it blue (I know, but I LIKE the black\blue look  :P)

So, I should be ok. I'd rather not tap into the pc power, as that will be another cable to worry about. My setup has all usb hot swappable panels, and I would like to keep it at just one cable connection when swapping.

On a separate note: will the new trackball come with a cable to connect to the Optiwiz?

Now I need to talk to my accountant to get the funds to purchase more goodies.

Mrs. Havok? Yes, I do need these...

So will "naked" spinners soon be available to hook up to the Z axis on the optiwiz that is attached to the trackball?

And will the spinners soon have a hollow shaft so we can make them glow as well?

(Must find stuff to sell on Ebay to fund GGG purchases).

As mentioned in another thread, the fab house didn't make the encoder wheels to spec so they are being re-done.  This will hold up the full trackball units for a few more days.

I will still try to get the ball conversion kits available before then.

Sorry for the holdup.

No bearings to go along with the trackball rollers?   I have a trackball with worn rollers, but the bearings (or at least one bearing on one roller) is rough.

Is there another cheap source for the bearings?

I don't want to miss my chance...  ;)

It doesn't need either.  It has its own interface, which is basically a special version of the Opti-Wiz.  If anyone needs one without an interface, that can be arranged if you contact me.

OK thanks, if I have an optipac or an opti-wiz it won't cause any problems will it?  Or would it be better to get one without the interface?

No, it shouldn't cause any problems at all.

I got my upgrade key yesterday, installed it in a betson 3" trackball tonight, and it looks great.  I don't have an led wiz, so I just got a 6 position switch I had laying around and a few diodes and rigged up a rotory knob where you can make it red/blue/green/white/purple/off.  It looks good with all those colors.  My only knock is the ball has a small bump on it, so it's not perfectly round.  Every now and again, it causes a slight hitch in your swing playing golden tee, or bowling.   When I get a chance I'll email randy to see if I was just unlucky and got a bum one.

Just installed mine today. It's smooth, unlike sWampy's. First reactions.

Looks great.

Feels too light, but I haven't playtested it extensively yet. The casual use it got while testing seemed to feel fine.

To commemorate this fine new product, I released a new version of my not-so-fine crapplication, SetLedWiz.

you can find it for download at http://mahuti.com/arcade/SetLedWiz.zip

Just installed my 3" RGB upgrade kit on a Happs Trackball and I found that the included spacers aren't thick enough. The LED's actually hit the trackball, even when I only very loosely tightened the screws.

I went to Home Depot and picked up some #6-32 (35) Nylon Machine Screw Nuts and added them to the mix for more distance. Now the TB spins freely and everything it nice and snug. I even found that the Screw Nuts threaded onto the screws and kept them in place before the install. That really cut down on the fumbling and aligning when I mounted the lighting unit.

The light intensity on the trackball seems absolutely perfect. Not too bright, doesn't distract. Nice even lighting, very diffuse. On my ball, there seems to be a very tiny imperfection, a bubble near the surface on one area of the ball itself, but it's not really noticeable, even when lit. I only mention it so that Randy might be aware, from a production standpoint, that it could create issues down the line. The ball itself is perfectly round, and the weight doesn't seem like it'll be an issue, even though it is a little lighter than the stock Happs 3" ball.

All in all, I'm very happy with the purchase. Another fine product from RandyT.

Here's some reference pictures of the install:

The Nylon Screw Nuts holding the screws in.

The washers (included with the kit) are lined up; ready to drop in the board.

Installed.

Now the LED's are below the dangerzone.

Balls spins perfectly.

Hey y'all.  Now that you're exchanging the ball in your trackball units with the GGG ball, I'll just put a shout-out to see if anybody wants to get rid of their 3" trackball for cheap.

I have one that's dirty and discolored that I wouldn't mind replacing but I haven't because it's not worth the money to me.  But if you're not doing anything with yours and want to get it out of your way, let me know :)

I have shiny new ones at the store for $8.95  :D

These are from the conversions so I am offering them for a decent price.

Thanks Randy,

The metal fab outfit boned the job AGAIN !

The last time they re-did it, it took them 4 days, but I don't know what to expect this time.  They may try to give up rather than trying again, but I hope not.  I'll try to keep everyone posted.

mr C. :

Thanks for the info about the spacers.  Looks like things are more cramped in the HAPP TB than the Imperial.  I'll make sure there are extra spacers included on future shipments.

As for the occasional sub-surface inclusion (bubble or non-homogeneous material), I'm afraid there's not much I can do about that part.  It's pretty much inherent to this type of material.  As long as there aren't more than a couple, and they are barely visible and below the surface, we pass them.  Only about 1 out of 7 or 8 are pristine, and we have to set those aside for the Electric ICE-T units.

For anyone else interested, I have an ultimarc trackball, and the install requires some custom work since there's no flat bottom on the trackball case. It wasn't difficult to make it work though.

So Randy, what's the latest version number on the LedWiz app? The last version I have (.87)doesn't have the ability to load & edit previous LWA files. Is there an updated version that does?

Thought I would update everyone, Randy assured me the dent/bump on my trackball wasn't normal, and replaced it and it's great, perfectly lighted, rolls smoth as silk, and has a great texture to the ball.  Now I just need to order me an led wiz and some lighted buttons, and I my cabinet can really bling, bling.

How is everyone mounting this? does the happ mount work? before someone suggests it, I have already asked Randy and he wasn't sure.

Thanks,

Anyone got this and installed with the Happ mounting plate?

Has anyone done a comparison between this one and a 3" Happ  for feel?

I am trying to decide between this one and the 3" Happ translucent.  I like the ICE look and the ability to change the color.  But I also can get a good deal for the 3" Happ.

So right now the question is installation and quality.  I know RandyT is known for quality.  I am just wondering if anyone has compared the 2.
