27" cocktail table UPDATED 6/16/07
« on: March 24, 2006, 02:28:07 pm »
I have started to build my 27" cocktail table.  It is similar to Whammocades.  He has been great in helping me out and giving me the dimensions for his.  I am making some minor changes to it but it will be very similar.  I will update this thread as I update my site.

Today I got almost all the laminate on, I just have one piece to do.  I am waiting for my coin door to get here so I can make sure I have the dimensions right before I cut it out.  I updated the pictures on the website, nothing exciting yet.  Next week I should be able to put it together, woohoo     I am now working on the control panels which I think will be one of the hardest parts for me.  Let me know what you think so far.

I was finally able to get it together today, still a long way from being finished.  I now need to order some joysticks and buttons.

I received all my joysticks the other day from Divemaster, he is great to deal with.  I am going to start working on two of the three control panels on Thursday.  All I need to order now is my trackball, buttons and iPac, however that is going to have to wait a bit since we just bought a new house and I don't have the extra funds to buy them.  I also need to buy the computer and monitor.  So my deadline of July will have to be pushed back.  When I get the two control panels finished I will post a lot more pictures.

Let me know what you think.

I used wood glue and dowels, then reinforced it with "L" brackets.  I will have more pictures in about week.

I have now installed the T-Molding and coin door.  The control panels are assembled but not attached.  I ordered a control panel overlay and speaker covers from ArcadeShop so they will be getting installed soon.  As soon as TornadoTerry gets in the longer shafts and balls for the reunion stick I can finish the control panels.  I am thinking sometime in July I will start wiring everything up.  What do you guys think so far??

thanks, I have to thank everyone here for helping me.  Like I said before, Whammocade has been a great help.  I got the idea for the black and blue theme from Knievels NEON MAME, I think his looks great.  MarkVP has also been a big help, he designed my 3rd CP that hasn't been built yet, but it will be.  I am so glad there are so many knowledgeable people here and that everyone is so nice.

Thanks

squirrellydw and/or whammoed - I am curious to hear how you wired your CPs.  Is it that big of a problem to not include some type of switch between the vertical and horizontal CPs?  I am worried that if I'm playing Pac-man or something my daughter will start playing with the lonp CP and mess up my game (because MAME will recognize two different actions at the same time, right?).  I thought about adding a some type of switch but that would be a pain to keep flipping and friends wouldn't really know what to do and I want to make this thing as easy as possible to operate...

Any thoughts or ideas?

BTW squirrellydw your cab looks FANTASTIC so far!  Mine is similar but with a reverse color scheme (blue with black T-molding).

A solution is ....
If you have enough spare ports left on your I-pac or get a I-Pac4 you can have your cp's wired separately. Then set up mame (Hit tab/input (this game)) so only the relevant controll panels for each game actually work.

I have finally begun building the 3rd control panel  :applaud:  I hope to have most of it done next weekend but who knows.   Once this is done all I need is the computer and the monitor which will be the very last thing I buy.  I will post more pics after I get the 3rd CP built.  The whole thing is taking longer than I thought but it is turning out great so I have no complaints.  Looks like I will be done in March, about a year after I started.

Looking good!  I think a year is reasonable for one of these things.  I started mine in April of 2005 and I'm not done yet (although it had an "unveiling" on September 30 of this year).  I still have a ton of crap left to do.  Seriously, don't get it playable too early or you will never finish...

I am also laminating my Super 6 Plus 2 dartboard tomorrow.

Well, I didn't get as much done as I wanted.  I did get the 3rd panel mounted and I must say everything is looking great.  I did fine one problem however.  I hooked my trackball up to my laptop and I mounted it wrong.     When I move up it goes to the left, so I think I cut my hole wrong but I will try it a different way.  I am going to try to work on it a little during the week and hopefully have more time next weekend.  I want to get everything wired up so I can order the computer for it.  Check out my website for more photos and pictures of my dart board.  The 3rd panel looks huge is this shot, it's actually 12 inches.  I could have made it a little smaller but I want a 3 inch trackball and room to spin it for Golden Tee.

What do you guys think so far?

Wow, my lens needs clean.

Well, if your axes are swapped, why don't you just swap the axes-wires of the trackball ?

Well I looked at it and I would have to cut the wires and I don't want to do that.  I think I can cut it out with my dremel, its not that much.  I think this is my first mistake I made so far.  Not bad for my first build.

I'd say it's more work to dremel than cut the wire. It's just two wires. Don't you know someone who can solder the wire for you ?

EDIT:
BTW: Looks great so far :applaud:.

Yeah, it is more work but I would rather do it this way than cutting wires when I don't have to.  It shouldn't take that long.

Well, I fixed the trackball problem.  Took about 20 minutes and the dremel saved the day again.  Instead of having a football cut out I now have a square cut out.

Nice! Did you strip off the yellow laminate first, or just slap your laminate on? That's next on my list of things to get for the gameroom. When's the BYOAC party?

Thanks, that means a lot.

Well, I got one side of the 3rd control panel wired up today.  I hope to get the other side done in the next day or two.  I still have to wire up both LEDWiz's yet and I might have to order a 3rd one   I plan on ordering my computer and have it installed in February so I can start testing  :applaud:  Then I just need to order the monitor.  I will post more pictures when everything is wired up.  Look for these around the 20th.

Absolutely beautiful work so far.  I LOVE the color scheme (I had the exact opposite on mine - blue with black trim).  Keep it up!

I have everything wired up now   I need to order another LEDWiz  but hey, it's only money.  Actually I am not that mad, just wish I would have figured out how many I needed to begin with.  I hope to have the computer installed by the end of February to officially test everything out.  I would like to thank the MaLa guys for there great FE and for helping me configure the LEDWiz plug in.  Also thank SHOCK_ for making my layout to use with MaLa.  I will post more pics this weekend.

More Pics!!  I have all the buttons and both LEDWiz's wired up, I need one more LEDWiz.  I still have one or two small things to finish wiring but that is easy.  Once I get the computer I can run the USB cables and run the wiring for the fans.

Could I get a copy of your vertical layout, I would like that, but with this background instead. Would it be an easy fix to sub in my background?

That is a ton of wires.  :o  Excellent job using all the wire ties, it looks well organized.  Did you write up a spreadsheet to keep track of what is wired where?

No spreadsheet, its not as bad as it looks.  Different colors for different connections.  I know what everything does so that's really all that matters.  Its not the prettiest looking wire job but it all works.

Finally got the computer installed and working.  Currently loading the games and trying to get everything configured correctly. Everything  seems to be working that I have tested so far.  I will have more pics here in a day or two.  Hopefully next month I can order the monitor

Nice job on the wiring.  Those cable supports that screw into the wood are a great idea.  I usually just use hot glue, but have been burned by that approach in more ways than one.

Having seen how they do wiring in car stereo installation, my first inclination is to use the lume like they do.  Hell, when I had a guitar synth (which was a floor unit) and guitar rack preamp - particularly as I was running stereo between the two and, including my guitar cable, had five 20' cables - I went to a local store and got a few yards of 1" lume.  All nice an tidy.

That is fine until you need to fix something and have to trace the wire.  I thought of using lume myself that decided to do it the way i did.

Almost done, I just ordered the monitor BillLabs BL27CB0P, once I get that all I need is the glass top.  Hopefully I will have the monitor installed in two weeks and it works.  I also plan on finishing my dart board that weekend.  More pictures will follow when I get the monitor.

Monitor is mounted and everything is working.  Just need to wait for the glass to come in and do some minor things.  I might change the t-molding and joysticks to red, not sure yet.  Hopefully it will be all done next week.

Now THATS a monitor!

Congrats on the build up.
Looks real good and I bet its in for a thrashing?!
I like the idea of the 2 steering wheels, great for Championship Sprint. All ya need is some foot pedals.

Again, well done and enjoy!

PS nice glass clips, heh.

squirrelly - fantastic job.  love it!

question on your 2 player control panel.  how do you like the placement of the steering wheels? are they centered on each half of the CP?  I am looking to do something similar but worried about the p2 stick getting in the way when in spinner mode (versus with the steering wheel on it).

congrats again!

the joystick doesn't really bother me as much as it does when using the trackball.  the joystick is more in the way for the trackball is what i am saying.  Overall i am very happy with it and the only thing I would change is the placement of the player1 wheel/spinner. It is right above the buttons so when using it your hands are in front of each other.  I didn't want to make that panel any bigger because then it would look really funny.  The steering wheels are centered on the sides but slightly above center from top to bottom if you know what I mean.  When I get home I can give you measurements if you want them.

You may have already mentioned this, but what inch steering wheels did you get for the spinners, and how is it for racing type games?

I'm sure you could find something even if you had to hack it from a pc steering wheel.  So those are the smallest ones they carry?  I wonder how well the 7 inch ones would do.

Very nice.  My next cab project may just have become a table now  :D

Quick question:  the bracket that is holding the top of motherboard's PCI/AGP cards ... is that a standard item you can order or a custom-made thing.  I was looking for something like that for my cab.

custom made, got the idea from Whammo's cocktail table.  Just a piece of aluminum from Home Depot that I bent into shape.  Very easy to make just takes a little time to get the correct height.  then just drill some some holes for the screws to go in.

do they make USB pedals?

You could get a couple Happ modular pedals with pots and connect them to an A-PAC.  Maybe you could build a small mounting box/plate for each pedal and put the A-PAC in the box.  You could have the second pedal connect to the other box (w/ A-PAC inside).  Or if you really want, an A-PAC in each...  It's USB.
