Ms Pacman Stencil update...
« on: February 21, 2006, 11:13:27 am »
I am going to order a stencil for the Ms. Pac side and front artwork from stencilsonline.com . Does anyone else want one? They are $190 for the first, but if you order 2 they are only $145 each, 3 are $130 each and so on...
So, I thought that if someone else is looking we could help each other out...

Let me know if you are interested.
Thanks, Patrick

You might want to post something in the Artwork forum.  A lot of time people don't visit B/S/T unless they're actively selling something or looking for a particular item at a particular time.
Cheers.

***UPdate:
I have interest for 3 of these now, that puts the price at about $130 each. Each further order would drop the price for everyone about $5 or $6. I am not making any profit off this, just trying to lower my own individual cost.
Now, I am just waiting on a new laser at the stencil shop, that will cut the stencil in 1 piece, instead of a top/bottom setup that they have now. Will probably be about a month for that, so you have some time to mull it over. Let me know if anyone else is interested. I will update this post when I have an exact date I am going to order.
Thanks, Patrick

The new laser is in at the stencil place, so I am going to place the order on Monday, March 20. Anyone interested please PM me so we can work out the details.

The stencil will be the full size of the cabinet. As a bonus, it will be cut out in the shape of the side of the cabinet, so it can be used as a template for cutting a new side, as well as a stencil for the artwork. There will be 3 layers, 1 for pink, 1 for yellow, and 1 for black. Aside from lining up the stencil with the edge of the cabinet, there will also be a reference block to line up each layer in the appropriate place for painting. There will also be a smaller stencil with just the Ms. Pacman name and graphic to make it easier to paint both sides of the cab, or just for decorating other stuff.

Again, any interest send me a pm so we can work out the details.

Thanks,
Patrick

So these are complete stencils?
I.E. trademarks, etc.

And its both sides, mirrored correctly... With the kick panel stencil as well?

If so I'm in.

The artwork that is being stenciled is from the vector art library, the sideart is scaled to match the original cabinet, and has the marking for the edge of the cab, so it will be easy to line up. The mirroring will be handled by having a separate stencil for the Ms.Pacman words, and graphics that can be easily placed in the correct spot for the opposite side. Kick panel stencil is also included. As of now I have 3 people showing interest. If all are serious the price will be down to about $125 a piece ( I am not sure about shipping costs, but it should not be more than this).
Let me know for sure if you are interested, because I need to pay on Monday. Stencils will be done in about 2 weeks.
Thanks, Patrick

Re: Ms Pacman Stencil proof!!
« Reply #14 on: April 06, 2006, 08:46:22 pm »
Here is a proof of the stencil...

I found 3 problems so far...

1. Ms Pacman leg is solid on  the black part of the stencil.

2. The Ms Pacman name/ logo should be with the side art as well as separate.

3. The 3rd ghost on the side art is missing the pink part of 1 eye.

If you see anything else let me know. Also I found out that they will not be able to cut it all in 1 piece, but you can see from the proof where the division is.

Thanks, Patrick

Sorry, I have been swamped at work. I got the first stencil sent to me. The sideart looks awesome, but unfortunately the front art was completely wrong. The artwork, did not fit around the coin door! I have sent the correct measurements to them, and we should have a new proof tomorrow. In the mean time here are a few pics...

It looks like the front vector art at the library is not 100% accurate :( When it was done at full scale the results turn out as follows: They are going to try to rescale it so the opening is large enough for the coin door...

Here is the latest update on the front art... The differences are now down to the 1/4" or so. Hopefully it will be exact within a day or 2. Then this project should finally be done. Thanks, for the patience...

I'd be down for a set too...just curious how you're dealing with the parts in the black that keep the stencil together...hand touch up?  Also, it'd be neat if someone could make some sort of rub off decal that would have the copyright info on it.  Waterslide decals could be done, but then you have the clear around the letters :-/

In all honesty, I certainly hope you don't intend to delay the shipment of the original orders...Just to add a few more.

Those of us that dropped a couple hundred bucks FOUR MONTHS AGO are getting pretty impatient.

That's reasonable.  I wouldn't expect him to do that.  If it's too late it's too late.  Maybe the best that can happen now is a second order at a slighly higher per unit price.  I'd be cool with that.

Is it possible for you to give us the order # now?  I don't see how that hurts you at all since all they need is to reference the files used to create it.

Sorry Chad,
I am not trying to be difficult, but we have been working on this since March. There has been alot of confusion and difficulty in getting  this together. As I am sure the others ordering would agree, I do not want to possibly add any more to the mix until the first set has been cut and delivered.
That being said... They were in the cutting queue when I talked to them yesterday, they are closed for the 4th, and these should be finished and in route by the 5th. So, you should not have a very long wait before you can reorder. And the turn around time now that we have worked out all the kinks should be about a week or 2.

So, I hope you understand that out of fairness for those of us that have paid, and been waiting for about 4 months. I will let you know as soon as our stuff is done.

Thanks, Patrick

Chad - it seems to me that there's interest in a second run - before you buy, post a message and see what gets drummed up?  If my piggy-bank's flush (which is doubtful honestly) I am in for a second run.

I would definitely be willing to coordinate a second run if pcates were willing to provide us with enough info to use the artwork files that the vendor already has.  I spoke with a supervisor there friday who said he would look into it but I couldn't even give him a real name for the person ordering the current run.  Obviously that's not giving him anything serious to go on.

I wouldn't need 100% up front, either.  Now that pcates has done the tough work, I could put in the order with, say, 50% up front from each buyer and then 50% due once I am ready to ship to individuals.

Sweet.  Thank you for your hard work, pcates, I appreciate it.

Once pcates supplies the info necessary for me to confirm the plausibility of a second run, I will post details such as the pricing scale and what I would need in the way of preorder funds.

Of course, I'm not trying to steal the project from pcates, and should he desire to do the second order himself, I will back away and pool my funds with everyone else's.

Ok, here is the good news and bad news...
Good news for those that already ordered. As I write this our stencil is cutting (apparently a stencil this large, and this many takes several days to cut, so it is running over the weekend).

Bad news... They will not accept orders from anyone other than me for this artwork. I thought I could just give out the order number, and anyone could order. Sorry....

Good news... I do not mind doing a second run. The pricing will be the same, so check out the 1st post. Once you get 5 ordered the price bottoms out at about $122. I will know for sure when the first set ships if I lost any $on shipping, but I think I am good.

Chad, if you want to organize this, then send me an email with all the names/addresses that would be cool. That way you guys can decide when you want to order, as I will have no vested interest in the price, or time frame.

I guess that's the best we're going to get.

Of course, with this change in process, I want to see results before I commit anyone's funds to more stencils.  So, pcates, let us know when you have shipped the current set of stencils.  When that happens, the recpients can post here with their opinions, and based on that we either will or will not proceed with a second order organized by myself.

Thanks for the efforts so far and keep us posted.

Sorry, I just noticed this thread.
Do you have vector artwork for these stencils? If you do I could do a run of adhesive vinyl stencils for a lot less than what you're paying for those stencils.
From the pics you posted, it looks like a Corel Draw file, which would be perfect for vinyl cutting.

Would you be able to do it from this?  I believe that is where it the artwork for this project started.

Well...

Did they "cut over the weekend"?
I spoke with them today, and they said the stencil is still cutting, but should be done by Friday. I  told him that if is not done by friday, I was going to cancel my order and get the money back from the CC company. We will see what they say on Friday.....

Thanks, but where have you been for the last 3 months?? The side art is front the vector art library in .AI form. The front art started from the library, but was not correct, and has been extensively reworked. I will try to get the files from them, so you can make some cheaper stencils. The advantage to these is that they can be used more than once... I will keep you all posted...

I've been around, but I don't usually look into the Buy & Sell forum because I tend to buy a huge amount of gear that I'll probably never end up using.  :banghead:

I can see how they might not want to give you the vector file, maybe if you asked for a PDF of the overall layouts they'd give you that? If not, it wouldn't be too difficult to modify the kick plate graphic based on the pics you posted. Did anything change with the sides?

Re-useable stencils are really nice, how do the stencils 'stick' to the cabinet sides for spraying? Do you use some kind of low-tac spray adhesive? And what kind of material are they?
One nice thing about using vinyl rather than a solid stencil is you won't get any broken lines in elements (like the broken lines in your black layer), but they wouldn't be difficult to touch up anyway. Also, with vinyl there's no chance of the stencil lifting from the surface and causing any underspray or bleeding.

If anyone gets the corrected AI for this, I'm in Canada, and I have a few people up here looking for this same project.  I have a vinyl cutter, and I am willing to cut for us crazy Canadians.  My only problem that I have is that mine would not be in one large piece.  My cutter will only cut about 20-24" wide, so mine would have to be done in parts.  Plus I'm in the process of moving, so things will be packed up.  But once I get settled back in, if good artwork can be supplied, I'd be more than willing to help out north or the boarder.   :applaud:

That's the 'ready to trace' bitmap and isn't suited to production, although it is proportioned perfectly. From the proof he posted on page 1, it looks like PCates has been using this one as a base;
http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/details.php?image_id=1047&mode=search

Yeah, I definitely pasted the wrong URL.  Oops.

So, I guess the question now is, can we get an artwork person to correct the artwork for us.  I'm not an artwork person.

Just curious how you do multi-layer stensils with vinyl? I would imagine you have to print out a few sheets and layer them over the previously painted ones like you do with Mylar-how much difference in cost is there between, say, three sheets of cut Mylar and three sheets of cut vinyl?
$6.75 the hard way-one quarter at a time.

Just curious, but why pay $130 for a set of mylar stencils, when you could go to a blueprint shop and get full size black and white line drawings printed on mylar for a few dollars? Then use an exacto to cut out the shapes yourself.

I guess maybe I am missing something too...

Oh, and I guess I can make this offer:

If anyone wants to set up the artwork files that Joymonkey needs, I will pay for their set of stencils and the shipping to get it to them.  All I would require is  Joymonkey's confirmation that the files are sufficient for him to produce the stencils.

Don't know yet for sure.  Since mine isn't going to be standard color scheme I don't feel the need to match them exactly.  I still have to get the marquee printed so I can choose a base pink that is close enough to the marquee and match that up with a proper T molding color.

They're definitely not going to notice because most people haven't seen a new looking Ms Pac in 15 years.

BTW, Glidden paint sucks a hard one anyway, so don't ever use it on anything.  Even the walls.  Plus I wouldn't recommend a latex on a cab anyway.

I'm not a paint expert by any means but have definitely done a lot of house painting.  I used Glidden paints on the upstairs in my house and I sorely regret it.  I use good technique, prime well, sand between coats, all that stuff... it took SEVEN COATS of yellow to get my son's wall trim so you couldn't see through it to the primer.  So I'd imagine how that would turn out on a cab.

I will be going to the Sherwin Williams store in the next few days to pick their brain on what to use.  I'm guessing it will either be an enamel or at the very least something oil based.

DO NOT ORDER FROM STENCILS ONLINE.

Absolute CRAP packaging, poor quality {looks like it was cut with a dull blade.}

My stencils, due to the extremely poor packaging, are more or less unusable. there are many pieces torn and broken completely off the stencils.

After waiting this long, and having my cash in someone elses pocket for half a year, I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.

I will be talking to pcates for a phone number for these guys, as they are NOT acceptable as is.

Sorry to hear that. I have not even had a chance to open mine, I have been swamped the  past few weeks, but obviously now I need to check it. Has any one else looked at their stencil?
Anyway. stencils online # is 1-877-863-5227 hit 0 for the operator and ask for Jonathan. Tell him that the order was placed by me (Patrick Cates). I spoke to him enough, he will know the order. In the mean time everyone please open the stencils and check them out. Let me know if this is an isolated thing, or are they all bad. Drop me an email at pcates@yahoo.com and I will give you my #, so we can discuss further.

So the black now sits perfectly next to the yellow?  That does seem like it's hugely hard to line up by hand.  Feel free to add small measures like that to reduce human error in painting.

If you add some positional marks that would work too.  Maybe a removable square at the top and bottom in the exact same spot on each stencil.

Man, I really wish I could help out with this one..   I've yet to get a good black layer out of the files on localarcade.com..  has anyone had good luck with that?  I don't have a scan of Ms Pac or i'd try drawing it myself.

If someone can do the color separations with clean vectors I can make stencils.  Being that this is one Namco watches closely i'll cut, but buyers take 100% of the risk and must put that in writing.

And I still haven't gotten off ---my bottom--- found the time to finish setting up the vinyl stencil artwork. I need to learn to concentrate on one project at a time.

Found this thread in my seemingly endless quest for Ms. Pac stencils. Wow is been a loooong time.

JoyMonkey, did you ever make any headway on this project? I know Chad is still looking for set too. My resto Ms. Pac is on hold cuz I'm stuck on sideart.

I can't remember how far along I got on this. Like most projects I get into, I got distracted by something shiny and....   oooh! a penny!

Edit: I'll try and dig out my files and see how far I got in prepping them.

Anyways, yeah....it'd be nice to be able to fatten Joymonkey's wallet a little. Not to mention the rockstar status he'd gain by finally being the man that delivers after so many failed attempts by others.

I'll try and get the file vinyl-ready this weekend, but I've got a lot going on right now so it could easily not happen again.

Just so everyone's aware; anything I do will be one-time-use adhesive vinyl stencils. The nice thing about these is they won't leave any "bridges" so you shouldn't have to do any touch-up.
Each stencil layer will need to be applied to your cabinet , painted and then left for 24 hours before pealing off the stencil and then aligning and applying the next color's layer. The black layer has so much tiny detail that it should probably be pealed off while not fully dry to minimize the risk of lifting the teeny tiny dots.

I could also use the same file to do colored vinyl graphics (white/yellow/pink/black with satin/matte finish), but the colors would be slightly off and the small elements of the black layer might be susceptible to people picking/pealing them off (you could spray the cabinet sides with a layer of satin clear-coat afterwards to prevent this). Paint stencils are the way to go, but this would be an easier and faster option.

Damn those horses.

If you leave a stencil on for that long, won't it peel paint edges up with it, or is that only an issue with latex?

If you paint latex over latex, the top layer will peel off. If you go VERY slow and keep a knife handy, it will work fine.

Hrm.  I wouldn't want to use Latex on a cabinet anyway if I could avoid it.  I've always had bad experiences with not removing masking immediately if I use latex.

The vinyl mask has a low-tac adhesive so it won't lift the layer of paint underneath, but the edges are a concern. Scuffing the surface lightly through the stencil should help prevent this, but I've never done stenciling with a latex paint.

So, were the stencil's at all usable? I sure hope so seeing you spent months on this. What I don't understand is why wouldn't you guys do one set first to do a TEST?

As far as paint colors, I have a fully restored Ms. Pac using vinyl overlays from an undisclosed source. The colors are spot on to an original painted ms. pac. I also have an extra piece of front art. If you are interested and agree on one paint source and the finish you want (I suggest satin or semi gloss) I will be more than happy to go to the paint store and have them scan each color off my front art.

I suggest Sherwin Williams or I guess Home Depot.

The original paint codes are out there.  Shouldn't be a problem, thanks though.

He hasn't spent months on it... he spent a bit of time months back, and now that it has been bumped, he has agreed to spend a bit more time now if he has some available.  It's not like it was a long term project he has been burning oil on...

I'm not an expert either, we only stock Matthews Acrylic Polyurethane at the shop so that's what I've always used. I would think a latex would work just as well though; so long as you test it out first and take care with the edges.

Hrm... not many ICI Paints stores around... but I bet I could bring those codes into the Sherwin Williams down the street and get matches.  I talked to them a while back and the guy there said he would use enamels on an arcade cabinet, but that he'd go to RI to get them since the laws in MA don't allow them to put a couple things in it and the quality is a bit lower as a result.

Why would we need to leave the stencils on for so long?  Also if I were to use latex paint and remove them right away what issues would I face?  I've researched the paint codes, so that's not a problem.  I have pretty much just used latex paint so would like to continue.  I've also seen some pretty good results.

You don't have to leave the stencil on that long, I usually only take it off when I'm putting on the second color's stencil (when the first color is dry enough for the second stencil layer to be safely applied to it - usually 24 hours, this will be different for every paint mix and environment).

Maybe with latex paint you could peel the stencil off when it's half-dry to help prevent the edge lifting, but if the undercoat is scuffed a little you shouldn't have to worry about it.

No worries, I could do some testing with tape and some scrap wood...

That way I could find out a workable time frame to let the latex paint dry abit without the risk of it coming up with the stencil.

Next question...when you use these do you do only one coat? two?  I'd think the least number of coats possible would lead to a smoother end result.

Not to worry Neil.....Home Depot still carries those Gliddens Colors and they are spot on, I already color tested them, I'm just waiting for the stencils to start spraying. But yep, they're still valid codes.

Just an FYI for ya, JoyMonkey........the kick panel vector on the AAL is from the Reunion Ms. Pac machine which has a different coin door configuration than the original.

I believe the Reunion machine has an over-under style coin door which resulted in the art being narrower while the original coin door and kick plate art is wider.

It looks like the front vector art at the library is not 100% accurate.......They are going to try to rescale it so the opening is large enough for the coin door...

Here is the latest update on the front art... The differences are now down to the 1/4" or so. Hopefully it will be exact within a day or 2. Then this project should finally be done. Thanks, for the patience...
Patrick

Yep....what's that saying....?  "Non-vector inclined beggars can't be choosers."  ;D

I think Pr0k actually vector-perfected the entire artwork for this job but then he decided against selling the stencils. Two steps forward, three steps back.

Anyways, hopefully we can now finally get some stencils.

Honestly, I am working on it.
Getting the black layers to a stage that's usable for stencils is a lot of work though. There's a lot of vector artifacts and various layers in most artwork that you don't notice; these aren't usually a problem for print media, but for vinyl overlays or paint-stencils I need to make sure each color layer looks perfect in its bare wireframe view.

We have faith.  Make sure when you finish you build a reasonble profit margin into the price... would this project be better off in a smaller forum?

I agree with Chad about pricing. You're probably going to get slammed with orders and if the profit isn't decent, offering these will get old quick. We've all been waiting so long, so we respect the need to make it worth your while.

It's clean.  It's cold.  That's high quality H2O.

WunderCade, he's doing all the work upfront... once that is done it will be a matter of just getting cutting time to make more stencils... it's old now, but once he has one, he can make a bunch more without much more trouble.  I'm more worried about it getting unwanted attention and getting him a bit of trouble.

I finished the stencil artwork today and did a test run of the yellow layer with a spray-can on a scrap piece of melamine. The stencil worked perfectly, but I really suck at spray-painting (went a little too heavy in some areas).
I'll try to get the pink and black test layers done this week.

I'm not trying to compete against anyone; these are just a few sets of stencils to help out of couple of people that would prefer to go the hardcore stencil/paint route rather than prints.

Edit:
And I wouldn't necessarily say that these stencils are 'better' than TwoBits prints; it's a just a different way of going about it.

Do you have an idea of a price point yet?

It should run at about $100 per set (includes 2 sides and 1 front, 3 layers each), though I'll need to do a few more tests to be sure.
Some vinyl masks are prone to slight shrinkage - that's not good news for multi-layer artwork like this since I've only got 1/32" tolerance between colors - so I'll have to test out a couple of different masks and see which one shrinks less.
I'll need to take deposits to help fund the initial cost of materials. Once I finish the tests and determine which paint-mask to use, I'll post the final price.

The pink layer tested good, but it'll be the black layer that confirms if everything is working together okay. The yellow and pink layers might need to be adjusted because the teeny 1/32" tolerance between colors might be too little, but we'll see later today...

The black stencil turned out fine too  :woot
I rushed the paint-job though (I suck) and here's a few things I did wrong...

The pink paint I chose didn't like being painted straight onto the melamine surface (which I didn't clean beforehand either). My pink layer was too light, I peeled the pink stencil too late and I didn't let it sit long enough before doing the black layer on top of it (I probably had two hours between the pink and black stencils). So it lifted a little with the pink stencil and then removing the black stencil lifted more of the pink areas.
The black layer's vinyl took a long time to prep and I rushed it and the paint-job. As a result I missed a couple of spots where the stencil wasn't fully stuck down and ended up with some under-spray.

I'll include a few small test stencils with the sets, so everyone can do a test before tackling the real thing.

Anyways, here's a video of the pink layer...

That looks awesome, great work!

Are you going to be able to achieve the 'fine detail' of the black, such as the 'shading' (the small (roughly) 1/8" x 1/2" 'lines') on the large ms pac's shoes and on the large ghost?

Rick

The fine black details came out perfectly; I even added a lot of tiny elements that aren't in the artwork currently in the Artwork Library. Once I do some stencil sets for a a few people here and recoup my expenses I'll add my file to the Library.

Edit: One thing I should mention though; because these elements are so small they have a greater chance of lifting when removing the stencil. So the black stencil is probably better off being removed while still wet.
Note to self: wear gloves next time.

They sure as hell did!

How long will these keep before being used?  Maybe this is a non-issue but your mentioning of them shrinking just made me wonder if these will shrink/warp over time (and heating/cooling)?  Is cut vinyl better when freshly cut?  I want a set but I don't plan on painting it until next summer (since it's too cold here now).

The vinyl I used for the sample probably wouldn't hold up well over a very long period; but then again, if it's stored flat, with the transfer-tape on it and at room temperature it probably won't shrink at all.
I haven't bought the sample vinyls for testing yet, I'm going to get a few different kinds and put them in a fridge to see which one shrinks less and then run with that one. By the time I get these to the shipping stage it'll be pretty cold here, so I'm going to ship them flat (not rolled up in a tube) to be on the safe side too.
I'm not going to offer these after the initial orders are done, but I'll be making the files public so any vinyl sign shop should be able to produce a set easily using my artwork.
So you can get a set from me, keep it stored nicely and it probably won't shrink (I'm not making any guarantees though), or wait until next summer and get your local sign shop to run a set for you.

OK I've got a couple questions.

1. Are those video's sped up?  I hope so, because you can weed a HELL of a lot faster than I can.   ;D  (I've got a small 24" cutter, so I play around a little.

2. The vinyl you use, is it just regular vinyl, or is it a special vinyl specifically for masking?  I've always found that when I put vinyl on, it's a bugger to get off afterwords, so just curious on this subject.

Oh one other thing, Excellent job!  Those look beautiful. When you finally post the files, will you merge them together, or keep each color separate? (Perfect for guy's like me who know little about Illustrator, and have no idea how to separate them.   :'(

1. The videos are sped up between 150% and 200% in places, but I did really rush these tests and missed a few spots (like the pink area on ghost's right eye). The black layer ended up with far more fine detail than I expected, but the yellow and pink layers are pretty quick to weed.

2. That's Oracal Oramask 810, it's made for stenciling and uses a low-tac adhesive that makes removing it easy. Oracal have a few different types of mask, I think I might end up going for their rigid blue one since I get the impression it'll shrink less than others, and it's perfect for flat surfaces. http://www.oracal.com/products/search-category.asp

3. I'll post the files with each color separated, and another version with them merged together.

Just out of curiosity, what is the timetable you are working on for when these will ship.
I'd say that I should be able to start shipping the first sets by the end of the month, depending on how much free time I can afford to spend on them.
I'm hoping to get some kind of order form today. It'll probably be a simple PayPal thing, but it'd be good if people could let me know if they need the stencils soon or if time isn't an issue, so I can get stencils to the guys that are waiting on them first.

These will eat a lot of my time and I don't plan on doing very many sets, but as I've said before, once I finish the initial orders I'll make the stencil files publicly available so any vinyl sign-shop should be able to run a set of stencils.

Now...will they be profile cut to the cabinet? That would make it a lot easier I think.

Unfortunately the rolls of stencil vinyl only comes in 30" wide rolls and I need to leave a border inside that, so it's not quite wide enough to cut the full width of the cabinet.
I'll try and leave part of the cabinet's curve in the yellow layer to help position it a little easier (see the attached image). The cabinet profile measurements I'm using are all from Jakobuds plans, I'm assuming these are accurate enough, but can someone double-check a couple of these sizes, just so we're 100% sure I'm correct?

The yellow layer is the only one that you'll need to position in relation to the cabinet; the pink and black layers will be aligned using the registration marks from the yellow layer.

Boy, you must be cutting it close to getting all the graphics in with that 30".  How much extra breathing room did you end up with?   :o

On a 30" roll I can cut up to 29 1/4", but these rolls come with punch-holes too, so it leaves me with 28 1/2" for the actual stencils.

Looking at that image, a thought occurs... once he releases the source files, as is the current plan (and I wouldn't blame him one bit if he changes his mind and never does), that will be a great way for me to customize the color scheme... just keep poking around the layer colors until something pops.

Yep, I just sent you an Illustrator composite with each stencil layer as a single group, so you can try out a few color schemes easily.

I'll probably just post them to the Artwork Library, since it's the one that really caters to vector artwork. I won't be putting them there straight away, but once I'm done with the initial orders and get tired of weeding vinyl I'll upload them there.

I'm curious about one thing, and I'm sure it will also help people understand the process as well.

With the Registration marks you created, I assume on the yellow template you don't weed them out, but on the pink and black you do weed them?  Is that how your getting your alignment so good?  I would assume then that you don't clean the registration marks off the machine till you've completed the final paint color?

Uh oh - Jakobuds plans are wrong*.  The cab is 31 1/2" from front to back from the bottom up to the bump out for the control panel.  It is straight up, not angled out like Jakobuds plans*.  The pic you posted in post #166 shows it as 30 1/2 at the bottom, but I just measured mine to be 31 1/2.  The height of the widest part of the side where it bumps out for the CP I just measured to be 36", while your pic shows it to be 37 1/4"  That explains why the curve on the small yellow and pink bar right above the large ms pac doesn't match the curve on the side panel (like it does on the real machine).  That curve is also only 1/2 away from the edge of the cab.

On a 30" roll I can cut up to 29 1/4", but these rolls come with punch-holes too, so it leaves me with 28 1/2" for the actual stencils.

This also seems to be a problem.  I just now measured the width of the yellow and pink bar along the bottom of the cab under the three ghosts and the width of it is 30 1/16" wide.  Up a bit towards the middle of the cab, it looks as if the max width of the yellow is about 30 1/2".

Perhaps shrinking it to fit into the limitations of your material is still better than nothing, but it's not exact.

Rick

*There has been a lot of debate regarding this here by others, and in my research it seems that the consensus is that perhaps there were cabs with his dimensions, but no one has been able to verify it.  The slope of the front is highly suspect, and the height of the bump out for the control panel, too.  It doesn't match my cab.  IMO, people are just giving jakobud (Jake) the benefit of the doubt, but in reality, I bet the plans submitted to him/collected by him were just wrong.  (his plans are based on actual measurements by him and measurements supplied to him from others)

If I do not respond to your post in a timely manner, feel free to PM me.

Yes, yes and yes.

I didn't weed the registration marks in the yellow layer and didn't remove them from the test material after painting.
If you take a look at the , you'll see that I weeded the registration marks out, then covered the stencil with transfer-tape and then removed a square of backing paper from behind each registration mark (being careful not to cut through the stencil itself). This way the reg mark in the pink layer becomes a window, letting you align the stencil over the yellow registration marks underneath.

On the white material that I used, the registration marks are clearly visible through the transfer-tape. This won't be the case on an actual cabinet though, so it might be best to cut the reg marks  in the pink and black layers totally out.

I'll do another video showing some application tips and tricks to illustrate this and a few other things a little more clearly when the time comes.

My files have some tolerance for lining up each layer; the black strokes outline the pink and yellow by about 1/32", so if the stencils aren't perfectly aligned with each other it shouldn't make a huge difference.

Resizing my files won't be an issue. I'd like to get these scaled as accurately as possible to the original MsPac cabinets. Thanks for measuring, I'll resize my drawings and post them for comparison.

On a 30" roll I can cut up to 29 1/4", but these rolls come with punch-holes too, so it leaves me with 28 1/2" for the actual stencils.

I can do the "three ghosts" section as a separate piece. Breaking the sideart into sections like this will actually make it easier to apply than doing it in one piece. I might also do the logo portion seperately, I'll see how it works out with the final dimensions.

I'm really not sure about the best way to tackle paints, it's not my area of expertise at all. I would think rolling on paint would be okay, just be sure to remove the stencil before it dries fully as I'd imagine rolling might cause a little caking around the edges.

On the measurements side of things, I just got a call with measurements of a few MsPac cabinets. It sounds like my scale isn't far off, I'll post a revised drawing tonight.
I'm not sure where it originated from, but it seems like the measurements shown in this photo are really close.

haha well id love to jump on these cause im worried that they wont be available when im ready to work with them. I am low on funds now and its rainy and cold here now. I have the itch to start in on another cabinet but working in the cold isnt any fun. I do have a heater in the garage but I dont know we will see. I do want to thank JoyMonkey again for all of his work with these. If I had the cash and was ready to paint my cab but its going to be 4 months until I get around to it.

I have my alpha mission cab pulled apart and pieces laying all over in bags as of now. I really dont want to gut ms. pac-man until I get alpha mission all cleaned up.

Oh man, I'm glad I saw this before I started cutting... lol

So, there isn't in fact an outward slope on the front below the CP? And it IS 31 1/2" across the bottom? Is this true?

*EDIT*

Better yet, there's a Ms Pacman at a local walmart, I'll be in the area Saturday, and I'll measure it to see if it does have the "outward slope"... This seems to be a heated debate... Might as well get it right BEFORE I start my build...  ::) I'll post my findings if any one is interested...

Galaga has the outward slope. This is the only difference between a Galaga and Ms. Pac machine.

That's is why some (like me) believe that Jakobud got his measurements from a Galaga and then....thinking the cabs where exactly the same...posted those dimensions for the Ms. Pacman plans as well. Ir's only a subtle difference, but for purists unacceptable.

Yea, that would be unacceptable to me... I don't claim to be a purist, but I'd hate to get my cabinet done, with the stencils on, then  have to sand a slope to a straight angle... ROFL

But seriously, thanks for clearing that up... I've updated my plans, and things seem to be back on track...

So, can any one tell me how far the coindoor piece sits in or "indents"? After I made my changes, it looks to be too far in now...

Thanks in advance!

Hmmmm... I'm not so sure the one on KLOV is original... Maybe somekinda custom deal... Because every one I've ever seen has been yellow with pink highlights, like the ones JM is working on... And the ghosts at the bottom, are blue, with yellow highlights...

I may be way off here, but I've never seen one like the one on KLOV personally... Doesn't mean they don't exist tho...

The original runs of Ms. Pac-man had the stenciled on spray painted side art, those machines are the yellow and pink ghost pattern.

Later, as production of Ms. Pac line was winding down, Midway switched to stickers for side-art and you got the Pink ghost with white highlights. They also changed the t-molding on the later runs to matching blue, instead of the typical black.

Both styles are legitimate, it's just depends on how late in the production the machine was made.

I always assumed that the ones with white highlights (and blue eyeshadow) were using 3rd party decals of some sort.
 :dunno

I got hold of an original Midway machine and have been busy reworking all my artwork to get everything as accurate as possible. I'm not taking orders for stencils until I can figure out something license-wise with Namco or TwoBits, once I get something worked out I'll let everyone know.

Here's a photo of the right-side of my cabinet and my latest version of the artwork for comparison...

Ok... Probably safer that way any how... Just let us know when you're ready!

Also, would u mind measuring how far the coin door panel is "indented" so I can fix my model? Some one told me 1 1/4", but that just doesn't look right... And, if it's not too much trouble, the width of the cab (from left to right, outside to outside please)... That way I can go ahead with my build, and will have my cabinet ready by the time the stencils are (hopefully)...

Good luck with getting the liscense! From what I can tell, yours will be the best option avaiblable...  And I'm definately looking forward to getting a set!

If I am not mistaken WCB, since you are in the building phase, you need the measurement with the coin door off to get an exact measurement of the slot in the wood, correct?

JoyMonkey ~ Thanks! That's a great start... Tell me... The measurement across (23 1/8") that's not measuring the sides of the cab is it? Is that from "inside to inside" so to speak?

Wundercade ~ Yes, I'm talking about the coin door cut out... I'm currently bidding on a Midway Coin Door on ebay, with 6 hours left... So the coin door would be original...

My Main measurements I need, are the coin door cut out, and how far that panel is recessed inward...

Thanks guys!

Did you get in for a set? I have spoken with a couple members that have confirmed they have received theirs as well, but everyone is waiting for more hospitable weather to use them.

Sorry to dig this old topic up.  I was writing simply to see if anyone had the wonderful files that Joymonkey uploaded to localarcade.  I would like to have some stencils made asap and would rather not repeat what has already been done to perfection by a very talented artist.  Do these files exist anywhere else?
Thanks

I'm not sure if this is still available from the localarcade mirrors, so here's the PDF.
Jeffe Rothe noticed that there's a slight problem with the left ghost's left hand on the kickplate, so take a close look at that area before tackling it.
