Re: Slow Boot Issues w/ Gun Plugged In
« Reply #1440 on: March 16, 2006, 07:09:38 pm »
I am still experiencing this with the Asus A7N8-X Deluxe. Even the memory check at post is slow. If I go into the BIOS is moves like a snail.

Any ideas?,
John

I've found another motherboard this happens on all the time - Asus A8R-MVP. Even if I go through a self-powered hub. Its because the bios is trying to enumerate and identify all the usb devices (it wants to tell you mouse and keyboard etc...). I went to the asus support forum and noticed lots of posts for this motherboard of people having horrendeously slow boot times with certain USB devices attached - it seems anything it does not recognise kills the machine. Very poor - I suspect its dodgy bios code, no update for me though.

My other (older) asus motherboard is fine booting with them.

Only think I can think of is changing USB options in the bios or updating the bios.

Good feedback. Thanks Silver. Ya just gotta love it when the manufactures try and automate everything for ya. Makes me long for the ole DOS days when I was in control!

John

Have you got a link to this review? I find it unbelieveable that having 2 sets of stands on at the same time don't confuse the gun (by seeing too many sources).

That would be Lik-sang's review:
http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3798

See the 'Two Players Action' section.

Since the first step is to shoot the top left LED group, I guess that somehow syncs up the gun and that set of LEDS (maybe it detects the frequency of that group and uses it as a baseline?)

Based on the fact that 2 guns work perfectly with 1 set of led bars, not as they claim in the review, and the fact that the bars are just powered IR sources, I'm going to go out on a limb and simply say they got it wrong in the review.

In fact the only reason I think it worked at all the way they hooked it up is because they taped the bars together and so had all the IR sources very close together - so the gun probably just saw it as 1 large source for reference. Probably just made it slightly less accurate.

Can someone with analogmame let me know what their config is for two player games?  I have one player games running fine in regular mame, but would like to get some 2 player games running and having some issues.

Currently in analog mame, my joysticks move the cursors on the screen, but the guns do not.  I'm pretty sure its just a config problem, but I am not use to using analog mame.

CALIBRATION PROBLEM:

According to SilverFox's instructions for calibration,
I am at the beginning where you hold the A+B buttons to turn
on the laser light.

A+B never turns on the light when I hold them in.
What am I missing?

The Laser is turned to ON on the Gun,
I see the laser light when waving the gun between the sensors.
I move the laser outside of the bars, and it goes out.
(Which all seems to be typical per the instructions)

But when I hold in the A+B, the light never comes on...  What am I missing?
...so I will ask you... "Deal, or No Deal?"

It maybe driver problems, the install process uncompleted. that would cause the lightgun in suspend working(without calibration or usb functions , but laser can be lightup while detect the led stand function normally).

First, you must make sure a usb deivce be indicate inside "device manager". If not, reinstall the driver again.

I will double check that when I get home...
that very well could be the problem.     but while I'm thinking about it...
If the gun has usb power (since the laser light is working)
is the "calibration activation (A+B buttons)" something that is just programmed into the gun
and should not need the drivers to work?

Drivers communicate with the gun. It opens a so called "pipe" for reading data.  The gun could need to "feel" the pipe. I am not sure if this actually is the beahviour of these guns but I mean that power could generally not be the only requirement for an USB peripheral.

No... The drivers must be installed and working correctly, otherwise the gun will never go into calibration mode.

I had exactly this problem at one point... I actually thought the gun had failed, but it was very certainly driver issues.

As Smog said... The gun must be communicating with the PC before the calibration will work.

Hi:
Sorry if OffTopic someone....but....:
With SMOG´s Driver I can not map any button  of the gun. This just happens me with Gun1.
Is someone else experimenting the same? It is just to know if it is my Pc´s fault.  ;)

This happens me with the Last beta 0.9 5

P.S. I have changed the gun with the same result (I have 2 LCD TOP GUN), So it is not TOp Gun´s fault, I think

theory return from ems, the gun work with 2 mcu(cpu), 1st control the cam and
laser pointer, 2sec control the usb communicate. So, if without of usb communicate,
all usb functions would be failure, and include the calibration.

Yup.. once I rebooted, with the drivers kicked in, I was able to recalibrate.
I'm working on the GunCon2PC drivers.
I have the mouse cursor following my gun.
But (dumb question) now my trackball is dead and the gun is my mouse.
Is there an easy way for me to flipflop back and fourth between the two.
I hate using the gun as a mouse in windows.  I'm too jittery.

Plus, I noticed my crosshairs in MAME are still active with the trackball.
I may have to edit my mame.ini I am guessing...  :)

Im using the EMS drivers... Whenever the gun is not pointed at the screen they release control back to the mouse, I suspect this has something to do with the fact that the EMS Drivers are not an HID Mouse device, where the Guncon drivers are.

Can't help you with the Guncon drivers... they don't work well on my machine.

Wrong! Even guncon2 driver suite releases the control of the pointer to the mouse when aiming off screen. daveg2000 probably messed up the configuration. See if you have checked the box "Free mouse cursor" in the configuration panel.

Okay, here's a new one.
For some reason the drivers don't install if I have USB 2.0 enabled for my motherboard.
They always fail to initialize the device.

Once I turned off the motherboard's USB 2.0 support, they installed just fine. weird.

Talk about stress.. hehe
I found the option you were talking about where the mouse will take
control when the gun is pointed away from the screen.  Thanks.

Now.. I re-did my entire setup.. (more permamently mounted)
and I decided to switch usb ports on my computer... AAARRGHHH!!
(Should never have changed it!)
I'm back to square one now, and cant get anything to work...
Basic laser Calibration is even a bear now.  I'm also running the gun through a usb extension cable.  That shouldnt be causing me any grief, should it?  I've uninstalled software and reinstalled a few times.. and cant
get jack.  I must have done it in 'just the right order' the first time...
(Thanks for letting me vent... I'll work on it more tomorrow night)
...so I will ask you... "Deal, or No Deal?"

I'm running two guns through an extension cable to a mini usb hub I installed on the ouitside of my cab, and its all working with no problems.

The problems I was having was actually because of the room light behind my cab, it was throwing off the led sensors.  With the light out, all is perfect, with the light on, the cursors jumps all over the place.

So, its lights out for gun games and al is good :)

Thanks for the tip.. I'll have to keep that in mind when I start going through the setup (again)  :)

...One more thought as I go through the calibration.  I've seen some posts about the distance that you have to be from the sensors for them to work.
Is it possible to have the sensors  angle 'inwards' ever so slightly, thus
reducing the distance from the gun to the screen?  Just wondering.

Good question.  I'm not sure if the bars take the angle into configuration when it calibrates, or if it just thinks the other leds should be at an even and level space away.  Also, if you angle it inwards, you may get some light from the screen itself interfering, hitting the leds from the side.   I'm thinking its possible, just may take some tweaking to find the  sweet spot.

Okay.. one more question now that I'm able to calibrate again.
(with the lights dimmed, and in a certain position to the leds)

I have 2 issues here.. they may be normal, they may not be....
1) When I calibrate the gun, I cannot get the '6 clicks' to recognize unless I'm even or just left of the left LEDs (see pic)
If I stand center, the gun never accepts the clicks during calibration.
2) Then during gameplay, I have to stand in the same place.
If I stand center, the gun loses connection to the screen.

Could this be normal, hardware issue, driver issue or a mystery?

I did try angleing the leds inward slightly, and it didnt make much of a
difference.. still had to stand even or just left of the left led set.

(Sorry for all the questions lately.. but hopefully this helps someone else out if this stuff comes up...)

before calibration, the gun aim to bottom left point, the laser will be light up
if without of any noise.

also, aim to the 6 points before calibration, choice the suitable place.

OMG!
I am such a knob.  I found out why I haven't been able to play more
'centered' to the screen....
PLEASE DONT HATE ME!! HaHa!!

It was the Room Lights.  ::)

Earlier somewhere I think I said I took the lights out of the equation....
But after 2.5 hours of WTF, I just decided to turn the lights COMPLETELY off instead of the dimmed lighting I was using.  (I would think the dimmed lights would have been fine)
HOLY CRAP... everything calibrated and tracked as well as it ever could.

I've been playing Zero Point and Crossbow for the last hour... and I think
Its been working pretty good.  I guess tomorrow night I'll hook everything back up in the 'permament' positions again and I think I should be good to go.

My only question (if you guys will still talk to me) is if there is anyway to tweak the very slight 'drifting' of the sights once you get towards the edges of the screen.  Its pretty accurate (better than my Act-Labs ever was)
but wondering if there is any way to tweak it to make it perfect?

This gun would be effect by background light source or sun-light.

OK, so without reading the 37 (!!!) pages about this gun, should I buy a set ?

What do you mean "should you buy a set"!!!!  You should have bought at least one set a month ago!! ROFL  ;D

YES! BUY IT NOW!! I've never had so much fun with an add on...  ;)

And research indicates that Space Invaders are strongly attracted to people who have recently eaten meat pies.

My only question (if you guys will still talk to me) is if there is anyway to tweak the very slight 'drifting' of the sights once you get towards the edges of the screen.  Its pretty accurate (better than my Act-Labs ever was)
but wondering if there is any way to tweak it to make it perfect?

Yes! when you calibrate it, aim slightly beyond the corners of the screen. It improves the accuracy of the tracking by quite a margin.

so for those of you using two guns, are you using both pairs of LED stands or just one?  Or does it work either way?

OK here is the update on the responses I got to my question about who is using what with this gun and how well is it working.

5 responses, I was looking for a larger sample but hey what can you do.

3 PC CRT
1 LCD
1 TV
2 Projectors/ Blank walls/ screen

all running on PCs

All say that the gun works great in all these situations.
I had no bad feedback.

I just placed my order for one, hope to get it by the end of the week.
Can't wait to get using it.
Thanks for the info gang!

That's it, the bar is closed!
You don't have to go home,
but you can't stay here!

Only one is necessary.

Probably missed your request in all the posts.  I'm running two guns on a 27 inch TV, svideo input from a ATI card.  Working prefectly in advanced mame after some config issues, most of which were with advmame as its a new varient of mame to me :)  But, now I don't think I would want to go back.

i have a few questions on mounting the guns.

1) Does anyone have any holsters they recommend.  Specifically looking for some that would go on the side of my cab (not the happs holsters that install in the CP).

2) I've been thinking about having retractable cords so that I can have the guns holstered with cord retracted during non-playing...when I'm ready to play I would unholster and pull the cord out (throgh a hole in the side of the cab), play, then when I'm through, retract the cord back in and holster.

I've seen several cords that do this type of thing (2 that come to mind are vacuum cleaners and the garage lights that you can pull to follow you as you work).   Does anyone know or having any suggestions about what I could use for the mechanical part of this retraction (so that it would work with the USB cables?)  I did a search on the internet and found a few custom ones, but they're expensive.  Was wondering if I could just buy one of those garage light cables (not sure what its called) at home depot and use it for this purpose.

1)Do you know how to replace this "IR LEDS" if they die/fuse before expecting ??(wrong voltages, for example)

2)Any ideas for replace the "IR-LEDs" or any other kind of replacement in case of they die/fuse?  ??? I do not know where to buy it   ::)

Most Electronics suppliers sell IR LEDs ..... You can get high power ones as well. I was thinking of getting some and making my own IR set for my cabinet. I'm sure we would get better tracking and response if the LED's were of a higher power output.

In that case....Making a plastic or wood or iron  "IR LED BARS" Should not be dificult. We just have to buy IR LEDS :D and mounting it on a "HOMEMADE IR-LED BAR"

Thanks for your help!!!!
