Best PC steering wheel/pedals for MAME?
« on: January 20, 2006, 10:35:04 am »
I'm turning an old Out Run upright cab into a MAME driving cab.  I'd like to get a PC steering wheel with pedals and stick shift to use with it.  Any suggestions?  I'm considering the Logitech MOMO, though my brother has offered to donate his old MS Sidewinder wheel/pedals.

Hi!

Me and the wife have both wheels! Go with the MOMO!!! It's very sturdy and arcade-like...build quality when it's best! The Sidewinder is small and
quite flimsy(but a nice wheel nonetheless)

The MOMO is a wonderful wheel. I would like use it for a arcade cab, but
I can't even think about how I would make it stick in a cab :)...I'm
butterfingers, you see.

Thanks AE.  Any games that have issues with the MOMO?  My main games are Out Run, Hard Drivin', Race Drivin', F-1 Grand Prix Star II.

We've mainly played PC games on it, but the wife played Cruisin' USA
on MAME a couple of days ago, with the MOMO. Works great.

I tried Out Run, just had to fiddle with the sensitivity, works good.

Edit: Remember to show me pictures!! I need to see how it's done!

Recommendations? Once I put my wheel on, I realized that I don't play PC driving games so I had no idea what PC games to pursue.

Any of the Need For Speed Series should work. Most of them great games. My favorite is NFS Porche Unleashed. Sooo much fun. The new NFS: Most wanted is alright... but you need a decent system to play it.

And I just discovered this new racing game yesterday as a matter of fact. Its called Trackmania Sunrise. It is awesome, gonna try it out in the cabinet later today.

Check out the demo here.

I use the Playstation 2 wheel that was made for Gran Turismo 4.  It's a 900 degree wheel that locks into different settings for different games.  Since it is USB, it works with PC games also and it rocks.

There is a special edition of Out Run someone did for MAME that has the force feedback, with this wheel, it is just like the arcade (well, as far as I can remember).

I'm not sure with other games though as I didn't test them out and I only know of the drivers written for Out Run by this guy.  Maybe if there was a demand, he would write them for all the other games that had them.

Xtra, you gotta PM me with info on the force feedback Out Run.

Since my cab is an Out Run cab, well, it would be a natural!   ;D

Another vote for the Logi Driving Force Pro.  It truly is a superb wheel. Now, if only manufacturers would start giving away 'decent' feeling pedals with their sets.....ah well.  Guess you get what you pay for...check these babies out:

Nice prices too  :o

and just for extra wow-ness...check this:

If you're mainly going to play arcade games with it why not stick to arcade controls? Did your Outrun cab come with the wheel and shifter? You should be able to interface those to the PC.

I have the Logitech Driving Force wheel for PS2/PC (non-pro version), a Thrustmaster NASCAR wheel, and a Mad Catz Andretti wheel. I also used to have a Sidewinder Force Feedback,  For playing arcade games, the Mad Catz wins. The spring tension is kind of tight, but it has buttons you can actually reach (unlike the NASCAR wheel), but both of the last two are simplified enough to feel like an arcade control. The super-ergonomic wheels and resistance of the motors when they're not working kind of ruins it for me. For PC games that support force feedback it's a different story.
Brevity is not my strong suit.

I was really psyched for about 2 seconds....

After reading up on the Logitech Driving Force Pro, an idea occurred to me to scrap the idea of a MAME driving cabinet and create a Playstation 2 one instead.  Money is tight, and I was going to have to wait to do the Out Run cab until I considered the PS2.

I already have a PS2 collecting dust, and a small 20" TV.  Sega is coming out with Out Run 2006 for the PS2 in March, and that would be the primary game.  Sounded perfect!  Alas, for some reason, Out Run 2006 for the PS2 will NOT support USB steering wheels.

Damn, I was so close.    :(

Just for information I have the following system which is by no means new in my sitdown cab, AMD 2000, 512mb Ram, Radeon 9200se, Windows 98se. It plays all of the Need for Speed games including Most Wanted all be it on NFS Underground I can only get low detail at 800x600 while Most Wanted gives me no detail (?) on 640x480.
I reckon this is about as low a system as you could go to play the newer driving games and would still cost in excess of about
