Buy/Borrow T-molding router bit
« on: January 26, 2003, 11:04:55 am »
This weekend, I finally started cutting the wood for my cabinet.  I was thinking about assembly and I realized I am going to need to route the groove for the T-molding soon (before I can assemble most of the cab).

It seems these bits cost $40 or more, and I don't plan on building another cab later.  So I was hoping someone on this forum could do me a big favor, and either let me borrow their bit, or give or sell me their bit for a good price.  If you are interested in helping me out with this, I will supply a long list of internet references as I have bought and sold many things over the internet over the past couple of years.

Thanks!
Wade

You are in the U.S., right?

I won't need to use mine again until I start my cocktail, so you can borrow it.  Send me an email with your address.

You could pay $40, you could also pay $21.95 http://www.cheyennesales.com/catalog/cmtslot.htm. I've seen them for under $20 but can't find it right now.

Mine's a 1/16" and works fine with t-molding.com's products.  It's a tight fit, but you wouldn't want it any looser.

Mine was $16.95 from www.coastaltool.com.  Product # 53400.  It works great, and you can buy just the replacement cutter for $11.00 if you need it.

Just a tip on bit size.

You should check with the supplier to get the proper recommended slot size for the particular T-molding you are using.

There are a lot of different slot sizes for this stuff, and while cramming .090" into 1/16" on plywood might be fine, doing the same on MDF could cause the panel to split, or worse.

Likewise, if the slot is too loose, you have to deal with messy glues that probably won't give the same holding power as a properly sized slot.

If you have to use a slot that is thinner than recommended, check it out on a test piece before-hand, just in case.

MLCS Slot Cutter Router Bits

Bit #5360 is designed for T-moldings - I used this bit to install Happ T-molding into MDF panels and it worked like a charm.

Thanks for the tips!  Oscar, thanks so much for the offer.  But I think I will spend the $16 since that is so much less than I thought it would cost and there's always a chance I could use it again in the future.
