the Dueling Bartops
« on: January 05, 2006, 07:00:53 pm »
So this is the beginning of my 'dueling bartops'.  This is bartop #1, the mortal kombat cab, Number 2 will be a streetfighter.  What I plan is two have two completely independant bartops that can be played on thier own, but they will also be able to play two player games, each with thier own cabinet with some simple cable switching.  The side that is on the right (which is actually the left side of the cab) has the shape drawn on it.  Eventually these Dragons will have some of those round zappy-things behind them.

Those look CNCed, either that or some real talent with a scroll saw. Did you attach the two side panels and cut them together, to get the mirror image?
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

I drew it on there, cut the big parts out with a jigsaw, then used a dremel tool with the sander attachment and some hand files.

Looks like a great start.

but they will also be able to play two player games, each with thier own cabinet with some simple cable switching

Would you mind sharing how you would accomplish this?

Cool idea, nice job carving those out.

I don't think they make a 12" red disc, I've seen yellow before. Wal-Mart up here has a multi-colored one, they were pretty cheap around Christmas time.

Would you mind sharing how you would accomplish this?  I had the same idea a few years back but never followed thru.  Are you going to split the video signal from one onto both and share encoders?  Or are you going to use the network version of Mame (I think it was called Kymaera?)

Thanks and good luck (I'll definitely be following the progress here),

Really It just a series of switches, inputs, and outputs.  I am going to use a dual monitor card(hopefully this wont slow down the computer too much), with a vga switch box.  Ill post a picture of a more detailed diagram when I get home.

Here is my schematic, this would be the same on both bartops.

Now Im just waiting on some tools and I can really get started!

So I never heard of the network addition for emulator (it's actually called kaillera), so I researched it.  I think this seems like a much more logical solution to run this on a LAN than it would be to use all the switching that i had intended earlier.  Thanks for letting me know about this!
