That's one crazy conversion.

What was the asking price?

$500.  What would you pay?  It's a KI 2 with KI artwork in a nintendo orange cab.

I don't know. That's pretty steep for a KI2 in a converted cab. The Nintendo cabinet would be awesome to restore to a Donkey Kong Jr., but the innards have probably been hacked to hell and back.

If I could get it for $300 or less I would do the following:

-Strip out the Killer Instinct 2 hardware
-Find a generic empty cabinet for free (local distributors often just unload them)
-Put the KI2 stuff into the generic cab
-Start restoring the Donkey Kong Jr., or make a 48 in 1 out of it

I would imagine it would be pretty cramped playing a fighter on that cabinet as it is. Unless you were always going to play alone, it's probably not very comfortable.

As it is, $500 is probably too steep.

What is a 48 in 1 and how much would the cost be to convert it to that?   Im a newbie at this but willing to learn so any advice is appreciated!

48 in 1 simply means that there are 48 games on one board.  We cannot give you links to where to purchase these due to board rules, just do a search.  Then make up your own mind on what you want to do.

Thanks for response.  I found the information I was looking for.  I guess stay away from the chinese boards on the 48 in 1?

You can pickup a much nicer Nintendo cab at auction for cheap.
Last auction I bought a nice DK jr cab that was converted to a nintendo .vs system for little under $100 - cab was not painted over and it still had the DK jr bezel.
If you have an auction nearby I would suggest you wait until then.
If I was trying to buy the above cabinet I would give no more than $150 for it .

One question i did have about this conversion is this.  Since this was a DK or mario cab originally, how and why would they put the monitor up close to the bezel?

I live two states away from the nearest auction. Some of us don't enjoy the luxury of cheap cabs on a regular basis.

Probably a Mario Bros wide body cab to begin with.  Speaker grill is in the middle of cab.  The widebody was black and the monitor was horiz.  Probably put the monitor up close cuz it was easier to mount and maybe a bigger monitor then original.

Because it's primarily a 2-player game and you want both players to see the monitor clearly. Either that or they installed a bigger monitor.

That is definitely a Nintendo WIDE BODY cabinet.  It should be orange Formica under all that paint.  I'd pay $200 max for that cabinet personally.  The Tmolding is jacked,  the CP looks pretty beat up,  god knows WHAT they did to the cabinet to get the monitor up close like that.

...and that's not even considering the sheer SILLINESS of running a KI2 in a Nintendo Wide Body with KI1 artwork.

It's a mess.

bought it today for $100.  Not as bad as i thought after receiving his pics.  In fact it looked so good for the price that I started to wheel it out before he powered it on to show me it worked!!

No burn in on the monitor and the graphics look great!   Now i need to find plans for a killer instinct cab and a DK board or DK plus board!

Here is what it looked like after a little cleanup when i got home.

Any suggestions on what to do with it?  Even though i was a big killer instinct fan, i think the game has passed me by after playing a couple times today.  It may have been the cabinet being uncomfortable as well.

As was mentioned previously, the move here is to convert this cab either back to a DK (or some other native Nintendo game), a multi -board, or a MAME (although some may disagree).  Take the KI stuff, and either find a nice 25" monitor cab to put them in, or sell them to recoup your investment.

At least, that's what I would look to do.

So how exactly did the seller go from $500 firm to $100? ???

Also, is that a 25" monitor in there?

I dont know how he went from $500 to $100 other then after I told him no because the game wasn't in it's original cab he emailed me a few days later stating he needed the money!!   I believe it's a 25" in there.  It's not the original obviously but in fact I believe it's the same monitor pulled from a KI machine.  It's wierd how it's mounted in there but it's not butchered as i one thought.

$100 is good I think for a working machine despite it being so mismatched. Got any pics of the inside?

Im just trying to figure out how and where the marquee was made.  It's not original and obviously not from Nintendo.

Im about 6' tall and playing that was very hard.  It was like i had to step a little bit back from the cabinet to see the screen.

Look up your local vending companies to see if they happen to have an empty KI2, or even a KI1 sitting around. You never know, you may get lucky.

I have my eye on a KI2 cab and I'd buy the can if I can get the guts somewhere. Still lookin for a dedicated MKII CP and MK boards to convert my UMK3 back into MK2

Looks like a great score.  The orange on the sides looks immaculate and even the black on the lower front is clean.  That is pretty  much an easy restoration.  Put in a 48 in 1 mount a vertical monitor and DK art and restore the CP and you can have all the DK games in a really clean cab.

Thanks for the advice.  Ive been doing this hobby with actual projects for almost a full week (started when i scored my NBA jam cab last sunday)  I have been researching a whole lot though just so i can gain some knowledge and industry terminology.  So far this is where I'm at:

NBA Jam - original cab, thought about restoration however alot of BYOAC'ers have suggested my cab looks good enough and not to waste any time but enjoy it.  Paid $300 for it.

CDS Texas Tumblers slot machine - Picked this up yesterday in a trade for a Fullerton electric guitar!   Problem is the slot machine is not receiving any display.  I have troubleshooted this thing for a few hours and have narrowed down the problem to a bad video card.  I hope to replace it soon as long as it's not expensive.  These are rare machines outside the casinos and since the company was bought out, consumer support has went down the drain.  There are a few places that may be able to help me.  By the way the Fullerton guitar was valued at about $75-$100 dollars so i think regardless of the operation of this machine, i got a great deal on it.

Killer Instinct 2 in a Mario Cab with Killer Instinct 1 artwork hybrid -  Was interested in this about a week ago.  Guy sent me pics and after seeing them i was disappointed that it wasn't an original cab.  Expressed my thanks but no thanks after he set price of $500.  Received email monday night saying that he needed the money and was willing to sell for $100.  Picked up cab on thursday.  Now deciding what i want to do with it.  DK games here we come!

Anyone have links to where i can find plans to build a KI2 cab?   Also need some links on reliable vertical monitors.  I dont want to go the ebay route on these.

Thanks for reading.  This hobby is everything everyone has been saying.  VERY ADDICTIVE!!!!

I'd sell the KI guts and restore that to Mario Bros, but that's because MB is a keeper game for me.  The sides look to be in pretty good condition!  It will cost you though, MB sideart is $95 for the screen printed repro, the screenprinted CP overlay is $60, and you'll still need a bezel and marquee. You can probably get a nice amount for the KI boards and monitor though.

On the bright side, if you MAME it with Nintendo games, and keep that 25" monitor in there horizontally, you can play Mario horizontally, and the other Nintendo games vertically and they will still be about the right size even with black bars on the sides.  I'd want to tilt the monitor back to original placement if at all possible.

$500 for that was exhorbitant, but $100 is a pretty good price!

TTYL,
Wade
