Sigh...

Ok, so I got the replacement jpac and the control issue is resolved.

I am still having fairly severe video problems and really need some help at this point.

I am just going to brain-dump the problems, if there is anything you see that you can chime in on please do.

The Setup:

- The monitor is a Wells Gardner Model WG19K4903
- Power to the jamma harness has been disabled
- I am running pure dos with arcadeos
- dmame version = 069

- video card is an ATI 3D Rage II+ DVD (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5106011395&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT)

- I have monitor = 1 (Arcade Monitor) set in arcadeos.cfg

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When booting, the screen is split as it is supposed to be.  Other than various rolling issues (normal) and the screen split, the pixels look pretty good (read on)

When arcadeos starts and places you at the menu, you can see various random pixels turning on and off when they are obviously not supposed to be.  It looks a bit like static but a little different.

At this point the screen has a little shimmy to at well.  Very subtle but it is there.

(BTW: The monitor looks incredible when the vigilante board is installed.  Highly doubt this is an monitor problems)

(BTW#2: The vidoe card picture on a pc monitor looks awsome as well.  I say this as at least one person mentioned that it sounded like a video card memory problem.  Don't think so)

Some games I tried and the effects:  [note: all of these games looked fine on a pc monitor] [ note2: All games that displayed had the same "static" effects as noted above.]

Moon Patrol - Some kind of major malfunction - it is hard to tell as the output is sent to a split screen.  Almost looks like some kind of memory dump or something.

720 - Entire game image was on a split screen, left and right borders were in the middle.

Zaxxon - Screen stretched horizontally.

Berzerk - Same as moon patrol

Uggh - I am ready to fall out so I am going to knock off, but if anyone can reply with some direction I would totally appreciate it.  I want to get this sucker done and out asap.

Since everything is on a split screen, you're not in 15KHz mode.  Did you also set your DOS Mame for arcade monitor mode?  I bet'cha didn't!

Everything isn't split screen.  On the list above, it was just 720.

I did not set dmame for arcade monitor, I thought arcados did that.  That probably won't change the "static" situation as that happens on the fe as well as games.  I will try that and see if it helps a bit with the other issues.

I got a chance to work on the MP a bit tonight.  When I set the video mode in arcadeos to 320x200 things really started looking up.  The ArcadeOS screen looks great now.  No shimmy, static, and the picture is bigger, clear and focused!

Problem is when I go into mame (play a game) I am back where I started.  The only progress really there is that I found if I I turned off stretch, I get better results on vertical games like donkey kong which was being stretched out horizontally.

Now in DK, the screen is really really small, like 10"x10" or so.  Any ideas as to what that is about?

Also still seeing static, shimmy a little too.  I looked for a similar setting in mame.cfg with no luck.  Am I  missing something?  I feel close here, this appears to have proven the vg card can send the right signal.

A follow-up with a little progress, jpac is great, really looks like a
config issue on my end.

I got a chance to work on the MP a bit tonight.  When I set the video mode
in arcadeos to 320x200 things really started looking up.  The ArcadeOS
screen looks great now.  No shimmy, static, and the picture is bigger, clear
and focused!

appears to have proven the vg card can send the right signal, it shouldn't
be a memory issue, and I am confident the jpac is working right on.

Thanks again, James

[Another Update]

After I sent the note above, I worked a while longer and had some more success -

Moon Patrol - By setting

scanlines = no
stretch = no
resolution = auto
tweak = yes

I got the picture I needed.  It looked great, a tad off center to the right, but I think I can sort that out.  Important thing is, no shimmy, static, etc.

Also got Berzerk working the same way.

Asteroids and Major Havoc - THey look good as above except that around the vector lines there is static.  It doesn't appear that the pixels that SHOULD be on are turning off, rather there is a little snow around the pixels (vector lines)  I don't see this "snow" on other areas of the screen just right near the vector lines.

Ghouls and Ghosts - I thought this would be a good test as it has the same res as MP - no dice, with the same settings the picture is squashed with static and shimmy.

That is all I can think of right now, I am going to re-read the docs on the arcadeos and mame display settings and make sure I fully understand the intent of each setting.  Hopefully I can find a pattern for setting up other games.

Let me know if any of this rings a bell.  Thanks.

The only thing I can think of wouldn't be an overall solution.  It'd be a per game solution.  Going into ArcadeOS per that particular game and tweaking the settings.  I had to do that with quite a few games to get them to display correctly.

That appears to be where I need to go...

One thing I forgot to mention though, I think it was moon patrol, then in ghoouls and ghosts, maybe Jungle hunt as well.  Whil the picture was great, on at least two of those I had to adjust the vert hold.  Anyone seen this behavior before?

Likely you haven't found the 'sweet spot' yet.  That one little spot where nothing moves.  Likely it'll be a bunch of micro adjustments to find that spot.

Also, if you haven't already, set always sync to 1.  That might help.

<edit> Ok, I see now you mean set "-alwayssynced" correct? I thought you were just using bad grammar!  :)  ("..., set always sync to 1.  That might help.")  I read that as, Set, ALWAYS, synch to 1.  </edit>

What does the synch set to 1 do?  Is that in Arcadeos, mame, or both?

Do you mean vsynch?

-vsync/-novsync (default: -novsync)
              Synchronize video display with the video beam instead of using
              the timer. This option can be used only if the selected video
              mode has an appropriate refresh rate. Otherwise, MAME will
              refuse to start, telling you the actual refresh rate of the video
              mode, and the rate it should have.
              If you are using a tweaked mode, MAME will try to automatically
              pick the correct setting for -vgafreq; you can still override it
              using the -vgafreq option.
              Note: the 224x288 / noscanlines mode doesn't work on most cards.
              Many games use this mode, e.g. Pac Man and Galaga. If it doesn't
              work with your card, either turn scanlines on, or don't use
              -vsync.
              If you are using a VESA mode, you should use the program that
              came with your video card to set the appropriate refresh rate.
              Note that when this option is turned on, speed will NOT
              downgrade nicely if your system is not fast enough (i.e.,
              gameplay will be jerky).

-alwayssynced/-noalwayssynced (default: -noalwayssynced)
              For many tweaked VGA modes, MAME has two definitions: One which
              is more compatible, and one which is less compatible but uses
              frequencies compatible with -vsync. By default, the less-
              compatible definition is used only when -vsync is requested;
              using this option, you can force it to be used always.

Cripes!  Don't ask why, I had to reload arcadeos and some other things.  I made the changes to moon patrol in the "game config" section of arcadeos.  Now the screen is a little 10"x10" box again so obviously it was more than the 4 settings above.  It has been to long and I have forgotton what else I did.

Does anyone know, can I specify dmame OR advmame on a per game basis in Arcadeos?  I have it set to default to dmame.  I tried running a game after changing the emu to amame thinking that would run advmame, no luck though.  Anyone done this?

Ok, holy cow I think I am almost done.

I reverted to an older version of arcadeos and advancemame and things are looking up.

Outstanding issues:

When I exit using 'esc' from z26, I do not go back to arcadeos.  System hangs and I have to restart.

I noticed a lag when I move up or down in arcadeos in both mame and z26 menus.  It is like the pc is taking a while to draw the snap or something.  Anyone seen this?  I was not having this problem until a min ago.

In advance mame, what are the shift keys for esc, enter, 1, 2, 5, etc?

Other than these issues and a bit more tweaking on the video modes I am there.  Finally I can get back to the Omega Mame!

I don't think moon patrol is in the arcade art library yet and it looks like the side are would be easy to vectorize.
Could you take a nice side photograph straight on?
I will, also I plan to get a trace of each side for future use.

any news about the tracing progress or hires pics ?

arg.  I blew it and forgot.  I told the person who got the cabinet I would come over in a week or so and tweak some things if needed.  I will try to bring a camera and get the pics.  I did notice that oscar has the marquee up on his site.

Sorry to ressurrect this "dead" thread, but I wanted to thank you for the
suggestions on how to strip the black paint off a cabinet.

Like you, I have a converted Williams cab that I have decided to put "back to original" (or close) and I had resigned myself to making stencils and repainting the cabinet.  I'll be trying the "Goofoff2" approach.

I wish I'd had these suggestions when I had my Ms. Pac project in the house.
The paint stripping on that one failed horribly and it ended up getting gutted out and the pieces sold off.  This new project should go much better. :)

Did you do any touch up to the Moon Patrol sideart at all after stripping the black?

Sorry to ressurrect this "dead" thread, but I wanted to thank you for the
suggestions on how to strip the black paint off a cabinet.

Like you, I have a converted Williams cab that I have decided to put "back to original" (or close) and I had resigned myself to making stencils and repainting the cabinet.

No Prob. :)  My Stargate art is dicey... and that black paint just doesn't want to come off. Got most of it, but there's still a lot left.

I'm probably going to sand 'er down and repaint. But that's another project. I still don't even have a PC for my mame cab yet.

But, got my IJ pinball working correctly, and got my Star Wars fixed finally, so I guess I'm getting ahead somewhat. :)
