IR Remote Keypad as Juke Controller?
« on: August 25, 2005, 04:33:40 pm »
Thinking outloud....

I've been tinkering with many different design ideas for a jukebox.

Now that the price of LCDs are falling, I'd prefer that for display to save on space. My designs to date have been leaning towards a box on a shelf or slim wall mount setup.

I wrestle back and forth with a touchscreen LCD though (I wrestle with the cost not the end result of what it would bring)....I'd prefer that over buttons or keypad.

Today the thought struck me, is there an IR remote keypad or other user definable device that might be an option?

I look forward to any and all replies.

I went with a pseudo-touchscreen flat screen.  I got a touchscreen crt in trade (they are MUCH cheaper than their flat panel counterparts) removed the touchscreen element as it was just a layer of glass double sided taped to the crt.  I then placed it over the laptop screen (was still testing the theory at this point) and voila she reads accurately--or at least well enough for the skin I'm using.

My only reason for staying away from a remotely operated system is that guests sometimes have trouble with things i find easy to use without some coaching up front--with a touch screen--its all labelled and after 1 use they can navigate it successfully (I hope--not built yet)

just another option you may have not considered...
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

Yes, thats an idea worth consideration.

I'll chase this idea as well and see what i might stir up in terms of touchscreen components.

I acquired a 10.4 inch LCD and had investigated adding a touchscreen to that but after testing with Virtual Jukebox, the type and buttons on the basic skins in that layour are a touch too small at 10.4.

That got me thinking to look at a 15" and/or perhaps examining other juke software. I do like the layout of VJ tho.

A recent project example was using SK which looked very different from the version I remember looking at before

Layouts can be matched by some software...

These products are readily available to convert a normal screen into a touchscreen. Not sure how well they work.

I used a keypad and an IR remote and they worked fine.
