FS: Lots of Coin Mechs
« on: September 23, 2005, 09:48:36 pm »
Recently came into posession of a bunch of plastic coin mechs. I have .900" and quarter mechs, and I believe the quarter mechs will also take .984" tokens (though I don't have any to test with, unfortunately.

$5.00 each.

Will they fit Coin Cointrol doors installed in late-90's Midway cabs? (I.E. MK3)

They're standard coin mechs, so they should fit anywhere a standard mech will fit.

Figure I'll use Priority mail, it's easiest.  That'd be $3.85 in shipping.

Is there any disadvantage to plastic mechs?  I haven't looked into them too closely - are most of them metal, but plastic is cheaper, or is it the other way around?

Do you have anymore .984's, and if so, what would you charge for shipping to Canada?  Can they be modified to take .984 and quarters?

I think I have a few left, and I think they take both quarters and .984, but I'd have to test that theory.

Mechs are all a standard size.  Unless you're talking about a door with a mech attached.

Mechs or doors?

Mechs fit into a door, they only compare a coin.  After they fall thru and are accepted, THEN they trip a switch.

Before I go anywhere else with these, I'm going to have to do a little research.  The quarter mechs I have work fine.  The ones I *thought* were .900 mechs don't appear to pass a .900 token correctly (unless the token I have isn't a .900 token).  I also tried nickels and dimes with no success.

And I'll have to go thru and see if there are .984.  I thought those I have now did both .984 and quarters, but after some brief testing they don't.

I think I still have one that's like 4 1/2 x 9" or something close.  Not a door, per se, but a coin acceptor.  You'd have to do the door on your own.

If you have any .900 mechs, I would like... All of them!

I have some .900 tokens if you want me to send you some for testing.

How should I best get in contact with you?

Should I post my Email here, and when you get in contact with me, then delete this post?

Whatever you suggest!

I'm not sure if they're .900 mechs or not.  They don't take quarters (too large) and certainly don't take .984 tokens (which of course are larger than quarters).

I gotta figure out what these are soon, I've got like 50 of them.

It's possible that the token I have is a .882 token.  Didn't even know they were available until I read a thread about modifying mechs to accept other coins.

Peale, I will trade several quarter mechs if these really turn out to be .900 mechs.  I convert all my games to .900 token mechs, and they work most of the time, but it'd be nice to have some real 0.900 mechs.  Let me know if interested.'

Thanks,
Wade

A forum member generously dropped off a few tokens into the mail so I could test properly.

If I had a digital caliper I could just measure the token I have, then I'd be sure of the size.  But I don't, so...

Thanks anyway.  I'm picking up a skill stop machine for the game room and they all take .984 - I'd rather keep the tokens standard.

Hay Peale,

Surprisingly enough, I have a metric ton of .900 tokens and games O Lotomus.  ;D I was talking to you a while back about your .900 mechs and the emails kinda died out. I still would love some!

Do you have any pics of the mechs?

Here is my problem: I have both plastic and Metal coin mechs. The metal ones have three threaded screw holes on each side. (THIS IS GOOD) These are for screwing into various types of coin doors. If you are using an old midway door (IE Pac man) these screw holes have stand-offs (aka Studs) screwed into them so it appears that there are four pins on the sides. Here is a Happ metal coin mech : http://www.happcontrols.com/coindoors/42303900.htm and those side studs can be unscrewed leaving a threaded hole. If you look carfully you can see that there is a threaded hole at the midpoint of the two studs. Usually coin mechs have 3 threaded holes per side for mounting into various doors.

It seems that Happ has taken to MOLDING these standoffs into the sides of the mechs. (THIS IS BAD) This type of coin mech is only useful if you are going to use old Midway doors or brand new happ doors. BUT, if you plan to use vintage over/under doors these new happ mechs Stink on ice. The studs can't be removed and if you cut them off you must drill out the side and then tap the hole. You can see the four molded stud version on happs website: http://www.happcontrols.com/cc/42307900.htm I foolishly assumed when I purchased this style from Happ that the studs were threaded. Now I have a boat load of useless mechs (well, I did use 2 on my Pac-man and that's about it!)

So... On the sides of your .900 mechs... are there three threaded holes? Or two molded in studs?

If you need me to, I can shoot some pics and post - but it won't be until Monday. I have my son's first communion Sunday.

I don't have one in front of me, but I *think* there are two holes per side, top and bottom.  I can say for certain in the AM.

The nibs are definitely part of the mech (molded plastic) but that's really not a big deal. If you need nibs, and there aren't any, you don't have to drill and tap, you can just take a metal nib and screw it into the mech.  I do it at work all the time.

Interested in some of the mechs but want to make sure it will work for the tokens I have.
The tokens I have are a smaller than quarters and a hair bigger than a nickel as pictured.
The 2 mechs that I have that work with them have a sticker on them that say ".870 tkn"
Let me know if your mechs will work.

Any quarter mechs left? I'm assuming not, but figure it's worth asking.

I am a tad confused. Maybe I am just silly... but you say that there are two holes per side top and bottom. This would mean that the nibs are not a molded part of the side. Then the next sentence you say the nibs are definitely part of the mech. These both can't be true at the same time.

I am looking for the mechs with threaded holes on the side. I do not want coin mechs with molded nibs. I have a bucket Happ plastic coin mechs that have the nubs molded into them and I do not want any more of these ever again.

Do your mechs have threaded holes on the side?

Do your mechs have molded nubs instead of threaded holes?

Is there a maker's name on them (Happ,Imonex,CoinMechanism) this might answer the above questions.

IIRC They're Coin Controls mechs.  The nibs are molded into the sides.  They're hollowish, so if you remove them, there is a hole remaining.  So yes, my statement is true.  Both having holes on the sides AND having molded nibs.  If the nib is missing you can take a metal nib and screw it right into the hole that remains.

So...overall, since there are molded nibs on these, *you* don't want them.

Hollow? Wow, now that is a useful bit of info.

The ones from Happ are solid and made of that rather brittle black plastic that looks like it might even be a fiberglass composite. That is my frame of reference. I had no idea that there were hollow nubbed mechs in existence.

I tried working the Happ ones (they stink). They were hard and after you snapped them off you end up with a very rough surface that was a bear to drill straight. I really hate the Happ ones that I got last round. Furthermore the batch that I received jammed and false reject at a very high rate. I now have 18 mechs that are useless to me that I paid a lot for, I have to alter to fit into my doors, and after all of the work I am unhappy with the results.

Knowing nothing about the coin mechs in your possession, I can only ask questions and try to figure out what you have.  I was mistaken when I assumed that the nubs were solid. I am sorry for any offence that you may have taken.

I am highly offended.  You are now my enemy.

I will now suggest to the BYOAC crowd that we form two factions: those who follow me, and those who follow you.

Those who follow me will have splendor, ten credits per coin, plenty of arcade goodness, and a million allowances worth of quarters.

Those who follow you will receive game over and DEATH DEATH DEATH.

Seriously though...

I'll dig up a mech later and take a picture of the sides to show you what I mean.

The Happ ones aren't really meant to be modified more than once.  If you don't need the nibs you take them off, then leave them in the machine.  Or move them to a machine that has the same constraints.

Ha Ha! I will now join your ranks as a double agent and report back to myself! (Do you think anyone would notice?)

I await your pics with abated breath (no I don't eat worms).

Just a standard door, any standard mechs will fit.  Will need four nubs on the corners.

so how do I get one of your amazing mechs and these magical "nubs" you speak of?   :)

what ARE nubs?

also...do you have any quarter mechs left or do they all take quarters?

I'd have to look, but I may have at least two quarter mechs left.  Most everything else is .900".

The nubs are the little things in the corners of the mechs that hold them in the coin door.  The Midway door you have requires all four to be intact.  They could either be the original ones, or the little metal ones that screw into the sides.
