Worst Star Trek episode
« on: August 24, 2005, 06:49:35 am »
I have been watching a lot of original Star Trek lately, and I think I have finally selected which episode is the worst.

And my choice was not the Abraham Lincoln episode, nor was it "And the children shall lead", nor was it "Miri".

It is episode 75 "The way to Eden", where a bunch of hippy protesters take over the enterprise. Never was there another episode of the show that felt so incredibly dated as that one, and it had like SIX songs, which was more than too much in my opinion.

Worst Next Generation Episode? "I, Borg", the one where their "ethics" keep them from defeating the Borg in one fell swoop, and this is the episode in which the Borg cease to be scary. They went from invulnerable zombie hive minds, to little Johnny Depp looking teenagers.

Deep Space Nine? Hmmm, the writing was a lot better on this show than the previous ones, although I had a distinct dislike for episodes that centered around Major Kira. My largest beef with this show was how Kira's past kept getting more and more complicated and unbelievable. The best episodes were the ones that centered around the Ferengi or the Klingons. I can't recall a single episode that stuck out as "worst" though.

I never really watched the other shows, so I have no worst episode for those.

The Empath--particularly bad TOS episode--I actually like "the way to eden"  it was so out there man you know?

worst next generation episode...any of the ones that involved klingon honor--their sense of honor involved stabbing people in the back and calling it glorious combat--it got tiring..

ds9--can't think of one off hand

voyager--any episode involving the doctor selling out or jepordizing the crew and then having them all cuddly best friends at the end--I say shut the damn hologram off when it annoys you (basically whenever its on and not performing surgery)
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

There's no such thing as a bad episode of Star Trek. First you're mean-mouthing bacon and now Trek. I don't even know you anymore man. ;)

Phew, so many choices, but there is one episode from TNG that sticks out. Can't remember the details (might have been yet another transporter accident) but basically Captain Picard is converted back to a child but retains his adult mind and memories. What I found ridiculous was that before the end of the episode he had decided he wanted to be an adult again and they somehow managed to reverse the process.

I have two problems with this. Firstly, who in their right mind would choose to age about 30 years. And personally I think the opportunity to relive my childhood with all the experiences I've built up as an adult would be too good to miss.

Secondly, this would be hailed as a major scientific breakthrough that could lead to humans becoming essentially immortal. But after that episode it was forgotten about and not mentioned again.

One final thing that really irritates me about Star Trek, why oh why did they ditch the mini skirts after about episodes two of TNG? That was the main reason why I used to watch the original series.

7 of 9, bigger rack.

I didn't like the episode with the giant cloud that kept on the planet with the guy who invented the warp drive.

Way to eden did suck.

The worst Next Gen was in the first season.  Remember the little parasites that lived in the Admiral? What ever happened to those guys?  It was weak.

I detested DS9.  It got nuts in the last season so bad I couldn't watch it.  I liked the ship, but the plot sucked.

I liked "enterprise".  I didn't like the crusade stuff they did, but it was okay.

Voyager had lots of bad episodes, too many to mention.  I never got over the hologram being a sentient being.

All of the worst episodes in the new ones were those Holodeck episodes. GAG.

My favorite episodes in The original series were the ones where they guys contaminated the planets by violating the Prime Directive.  I liked those the best.  I think there were 3 of them.

My Fav is the one where bones got laid in that ship the size of an asteroid.

My Fav episode in the Next Gen was the last one, "all good things".

I detest Star Trek.

That being said, I've seen a hell of a lot of episodes from all the series.

And I always said that in NG, if they took away the holodeck - they would have half as many episodes.   ::)

With TOS, I haven't seen many, and don't know them by name. The one with the rock creatures in the mine was kind of stupid.

IN TNG, even though it is my favorite series, had the worst ever episode. Shades of Grey, a second season episode. The one and only Star Trek Clip Show. Worst episode ever.

In DS9, I generally don't like episodes that center around the Ferengi, like when the Nagus visits.

Haven't really seen any Voyager

I like Enterprise, and haven't seen any episodes I'm that disgusted with

Oh right, the one with the standard scifi robot trying to figure out how to be more human.  That's such an original concept.

"Lost in Space" Robot - Few Sci-Fi fans could forget the roller-coaster relationship between the hulking "Lost in Space" robot and the extravagant-yet-cowardly Dr. Smith. This robot was a true pioneer, defying many gay robot stereotypes. To this day, he is the only gay character in history without a personality. And while many other gay robots would've went after the handsome pilot (or even the ship's blender), this macho-machine preferred a more submissive partner. Make no mistake, it was clear that Dr. Smith was the "bltch" in the relationship. Fans of the show can remember him moaning, "Oh, the pain!!!"

He was based on a science fiction cliche that derives from the Asimov idea.  By the time this show came along it had already been done multiple times on TV and hundreds of times in literature.

Actually I've always considered Data to be a very nice tribute to Asimov's humaniform robot, R. Daneel Olivaw who was one of the main characters in four (?) of his books. IMO, Data, though not an original concept by a long shot, still made for one of the more interesting characters in any Trek series.

That opinion can be used as an argument against the quality of the series... that they couldn't come up with anything more intriguing than a tired scifi cliche.

What I always thought didn't make sense was that Data was supposed to be a totally unique experiment in artificial human-like intelligence. But all of the holodeck characters seemed to be just as intelligent as human-like as he was.

Hrm... I saw half of the one with the whales... I saw Wrath of Khan a few times, because I had a broken leg and it was on HBO that month... I think I saw that one where the bald guy and Kirk were on the same planet as Le Petit Prince and fought a rainbow...

...wait, was that last one the month I found that stash at the basketball court?

I know most of us are video game addicts who don't have outside lives, but please, we don't have to advertise it by letting a Star Trek thread go over 2 pages.

...

All original Star Treks are equally bad
All NG were the ensign solves everything are equally bad
All DS that refer to the captain as a worm hole god are equally bad
All Vgers that revolve around the holo-deck  are equally bad
I have no complaints about the latest series

TNG had the best writing. I didn't like Wesley Crusher. But IMO, it was the best series. Favorite movie, I'm split between The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country

The undiscoverd Country? OMG.
I guess kirk getting the green chick (who we don't really know was a chick) was okay.

I did like the blood floating in the air, nice touch.

The best movie was Generations. Except the stupid way they killed Kirk. Shot in the back? He battles aliens from every direction in a 100 episodes and some old guy shoots him in the back? What is up with that?

Generations is the Best TNG movie. He was only shot in the back in the alternate ending that wasn't seen until the Special Edition DVD, but his death in the movie was pretty stupid as well..

I couldn't stand The Voyage Home

My favorite episode of all Star Trek is the last one in "all good things" where Riker comes in with the suped up version of the enterprise and lays waste.

I guess Rodenberry didn't like that kinda crap, he wanted the Kirk that talks through problems.

Personally, I like the photon torpedo's to do the talking.

I just rewatched "Spock's Brain".

The premise isn't all that bad, but it seems to have the single worst script (and possibly direction) of any of the classic episodes. With a competent writer that could have been a good episode.

Sure, someone stealing Spock's brain might not be all that plausible, but it is a whole lot more plausible than the 5 EXACT REPLICA's of earth they encountered that apparently had identical history to earth up until something happened differently.

I think we've had enough Trek for a good while...  we've had at least one series in constant run since TNG started in the mid 80's...  time to give it a rest for a few years... let some time go by to develop new ideas and hopefully new producers who won't run the franchise into the ground.

Or perhaps is it time to just quit with Trek altogether?  With Roddenberry long gone, some of the TOS actor's gone and the franchise gone stale, should we finally just let it go and hope for something else that's fun and enjoyable to come along?

I don't know, I found Enterprise to be a very, very good series. I was hugely bummed when it got cancelled. What needs to happen with Trek is Paramount needs to sell it to someone who gives a crap about producing Sci-Fi. UPN is the worst network on Amerian TV, unless I suppose you're a teenage girl, that seems to be their target demogaphic these days. I wish the Sci-Fi channel could get their hands on Trek. I used to hate Sci-Fi original productions, but their new Battlestar Galactica has totally changed my mind about that. Since it came out I decided to give the two Stargate series a shot too, and they're both also very good shows.

The worst STNG episode was the one where the first Security Officer gets killed the the alien that looks like a tar pit.

I did like how Worf became the security chief. He's much more intimidating than that dike.

As for DS9... I can't recall a bad episode. I would have to say every episode that didn't have Chief O'Brian in it was a not good episode.

The best STNG episode was the one with Wesley and that girl (Ashley Judd) when everyonw gets addicted to playing that game. I was only the best becuse of Ashley Judd was sooo hot in it (I was in high school when I first saw the episode).

Was Spock's final death ever established? If not the fact that Vulcan's live twice as long as humans, and the fact that Leonard Nimoy is pretty old (but still healthy last I heard), opens the door for a TNG era show staring Spock.

Yes, last time we saw Spock, he was on Romulus as a double agent.

His dad Seraek died.  Pickard delivered his "essense" or whatever and the episode was filled with touchy feely vulcan emotion.

That would be a good one, maybe he wouldn't get shot in the freaking back.  Spock kept in pretty good shape too, Kirk got fat as a horse.

I'd like to see Spock fight Q in some episode.

Poor Robby became one of those studio props that basicly got pimped out to anything remotely sci-fi that needed a robot for an episode. He also appeared in a few episodes of Lost in Space, The Twilight Zone, The Addams Family, and a ton of b-movies. However he was built for Forbidden Planet. Everything else he was in was just the studio being too cheap to build a dedicated prop for those other shows.

Interesting, I never made that connection. Apparantly a guest appearance by Robby the Robot is the Pinball seal of quality.

Was he ever on ST: TNG?
Proper capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse, and helping your uncle jack off a horse.

Unless there's a TNG ep. that I have not seen (unlikely), I'll go with no.
