Robocop $175, Is it a good buy?
« on: December 30, 2002, 01:54:45 pm »
Quick question,  I have a chance to buy a Robocop machine for $175,  the  sound works, but the monitor has no picture.  Is this worth the money?  Can it be fixed easily?

Thanks!

No... for that price it should be perfect.  $50 bucks max for a non-working cab unless its a true classic (pacman/mspacman/tron ect).

If the cabinet is in PERFECT physical condition, then ask if they can prove everything works with another board... then it might be worth it.

Unless you know exactly what is wrong with the monitor, and how to fix it, then that is neither easy, nor a good buy.  Sorry but you can do a lot better for $175.

Games regularly go for less than $100, often a lot less.  Frequently as little as $10 or $20, especially if there is something wrong with the game.  Apparently you've never been to an auction.

visit http://www.basementarcade.com/ and review the auction results reports at http://www.basementarcade.com/arcade/auction/index.html and you'll have a better idea what I am talking about.

Snake, I've noticed that a few folks around here seem to be irritated by you, lately.  If I could give you some advice, try to sound less like you know it all, and maybe people will give you credit for what you do know.

Maybe I should start writing fortune cookies, but that's my .02

WOw,  looks like for $ 175 I could have gotten a Tekken 2 machine!  Went to the Super Auction http://superauctions.com/
in San Jose about a year ago, but unfortunately I wasn't  able to stay long enough for the bidding to start.  Dang!  now I know !

NO !...
i dont know it all but think...if the guy asked $175,the best you can offer is $100..i dont know about other places but over here locally, you cant really get any kind of arcade machine under $100.
And you are right..never been to any auctions(there isnt any around me ever so...).
I converted 3 classic sf2 machines(last summer) to mame/sale and I couldn't bring myself offering only like $10...$20(i dont wanna sound like an --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- to the arcade dealer guy,he is cool and always cuts me good deal).

It all depends on the auction and the market your in. The reports i've seen on some of the auctions wouldn't encourage me to go. Heres a report from the mid december auction in Detroit- http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=3dfe132f%240%241400%24272ea4a1%40news.execpc.com&rnum=1

Price aside, a robocop game is a good game to preserve, but NOT to mame.  First off the robocop dataeast cabinet was only usd on a select few games (robocop,robocop2 and the "parent" game bad dudes.)  It's unique shape and curved marquee make it a collector's item.  If the cabinet you are looking at does not have a curved marquee then it's not a robocop cabinet and is pretty much worthless without a working monitor. (robocop pcb's are a dime a dozen)  If it is then it's worthless for mame anyway.  Why?  Well for one thing it has a heavy gauge steel cp.  This cp is also very narrow, meaning that it would be quite difficult to put more than 3 buttons on it a piece and not be right against the monitor when you are playing, not to mention actually cutting through the thick metal cp.  It can be done, as the original sf2 had a similar cp, but it's not reccomended. (Even capcom quickly changed to a larger cp in later revisions of the sf2 series)  It doesn't sound like your are going to mame it, but I just wanted to warn you.

It is a rather collectable cabinet and to a robocop or dataeast fan it's worth it, but if you are just wanting it to mame then it's probably not worth your time.

Hope that helps
