Need Help with my NBA Jam Coin Op

I am having problems with my NBA JAM coin op. When I turn it on and start to play it the following message shows up on the screen and the game resets

           USING CMOS COINAGE

Does anyone know why this is or how I can fix it?

Any help is appreciated

Sounds like a dip switch setting is stuck on or off. Flip a few of them till it comes on then reset.

*bad* advice.  Get the manual, check and see if the dips are correct, first of all.  You don't want to just go flipping the dips willy-nilly.

Actually FIRST of all, make sure that the board is getting the correct voltage.  Take a multimeter, and measure @ the JAMMA harness (on the board, if possible) to make sure the board is getting enough juice.  You want to see ~5.18 volts DC.  If you don't have a multimeter, beg, borrow or buy one.  You can get one for ~$20, depending where you go. 

If it's off, there should be a knob on your power supply to adjust to the correct level.  There is some level of fuzz factor, so if it's reading 4.89 volts, likely that's not enough, turn it up.  If it's reading 5.09 volts, and is still not coming up, there may be other issues.

After you verify your voltage, and if it's correct, let us know.

Yes get the manual. Otherwise if your not into searching (witch could be since he is posting on a forum looking for help) No harm can come from flipping them. I own the Board also...i haven't seen any explosions from flipping to date.

Explosions?  Doubtful.  But if they're already where they're supposed to be, flipping them can screw things up.

At the very least, note their positions before flipping them around.

CMOS Coinage means that the game is using the coin settings from the test mode, not the dipswitches...

I have had the game for about a year now, I bought it from a guy in Rochester, NY and I played it there and it worked fine. I had to load it in my truck and drive about 3 1/2 hours so I am thinking something may have been screwed up on the trip home

I have played a game or 2 in a row before it starts resetting but once it resets it continues every 10 seconds or so, about a month ago I played about 20 games with NO problems, I THINK THAT IS VERY ODD



I am going to try and pick up a multimeter this weekend and go home and test it!


I have played with the test mode and tried a bunch of other things with no luck, I am very unknowledgable with arcade machines though...

When I test it with a multimeter where do I stick the multimeter at to get an accurate reading?

At the JAMMA harness.  On the red and black power cables, red being +5v and black being ground.  If possible, you want to test it right on the PCB, being careful (of course) not to touch the other components.

If it's reading this way after a move, try reseating the JAMMA edge connector, it may have loosened up some.  I rather doubt it's the DIP switches, unless some debris inside happened to smack one of the tiny, itty bitty switches (read: quite doubtful).

Is it possible you have a pinched/abraded wire on either the control panel or coin door? Sometimes wires get nicked near the coin door hinge and short to ground.

Check for loose or slightly askew connectors throughout the cabinet wiring harnesses. Check interboard cable that goes between the gameboard and the sound board.

Is the "test" switch flipped all the way in the game mode?

Ken, I checked the cords and a couple were loose and I tightened them back up and the test mode switch is all the way over


I really think it MUST be the power so I need to pick me up a multimeter

Perhaps the Battery that maintains menu and admin data has died?

Like was said probably a 5v issue. I would push on the ROMs (chips in sockets) and make sure they are seated. I had the same thing with a Mortal Kombat II. The power was good, I pulled all the chips in sockets and cleaned the pins, and it has been going for years without a problem.
