Name your first favorite
« on: June 19, 2005, 03:44:52 am »
However unoriginal this may seem, Pacman was my first favorite.  We had one in our local arcade and I would play it for hours at a time (now play it on my MAME) to me it was awesome.  I loved the graphics, gameplay, and the suspension of what intermision was going to come next (although there are only three, when you are young this is exciting.)  My personal favorite... Whats yours??
Over my window they'd written my name,
Saying so long and see you again.

Street fighter 2 WW was what i mostly played in the arcades and fondly remember beating all the competition that walked up to player number two.

Omega Race sitdown.

I would park myself on that one for hours.

(Now if I could only afford to get a dedicated one up and running, %#$% batteries!)

Super Spy for Neo Geo. General consensus says this game sucks, but for some reason I would dump quarter after quarter in to the machine. I simply loved the game but now it annoys me.

Tron. I loved the step inside cabinet thing they had going on.  Stepping into it felt cool. Especially since the arcade was always very dark for some reason and the blue hue of the controls made everything very sureal.

The first video game I remember was at a Marie Callendars I worked at.  They had a B&W Breakout cocktail table in the waiting area.  I'd have to say it was my first favorite.

Atari Super Sprint. My buddy Bruce and I would spend HOURS playing on one or two quarters each. Missed a lot of classes due to that game.

Space Invaders, I was 6 years old. Who couldnt walk by and be mesmerized and sucked in by the THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP?

Followed by a close second would be Galaxian. The ones at the arcade I played at were always cranked to the max, and ALWAYS drowned out Pac-Man!  ;)

(incidentally, i dont remember galaga back in the day. and i admit it plays better. just doesnt evoke memories)

Beat me to it.  Jungle king was the very best chuck E. cheese had to offer.  And my first arcade love.

But SF2 world warrior is my all time favorite.

The game I can remember quite well is Road Blasters.  When I was on holidays I played the upright version of this and got hooked.  I didn't enjoy the sit down version as much due to the way the screen tried to create a 3-d type image.

I also loved playing NARC.  Had to really hunt around to find an arcade that had that game.

I second Roadblasters.

Had it at the local grocery store.
Every week I got a 1$ allowance(WHOO! BIG MONEY!).
Every week we went to buy groceries.
Every week I dumped a dollar into Roadblasters.
Untill one dark day they replaced their arcade machines with COKE MACHINES!

First favorite?   Probably Donkey Kong when it first came out.

I played Space Invaders when it was first out, and that that point I guess it was my "favorite" of all available games, but jeeze, what were my options?

I remember seeing Galaxian at Castle Golf and Games when it first came out and I was blown away by the looks of it.  I mean, dude, there were COLORS on that screen... and not the kind that come from translucent 'tape' on the glass!    But the gameplay bored me after a while, just like Space Invaders did.

But when Donkey Kong came out, I was hooked!  But man, 1981 was a good year for arcade games.  There were a bunch of good ones that came out that year.

Space Invaders.

Before Space Invaders video games were just something that was interesting and new to play, then Space Invaders came along and it created an addiction. Arcades had huge banks of Space Invaders and would hold tournaments, I can't ever recall a Pong tournament.

When I was 7 is about when i started to play... and wasnt that good.   I know I spent more time on Segas Turbo than anything else at that time.. but loved them all really.

Later I got Hooked into Spy Hunter.   And Sill love the game.  Bought the real machine.

Out Run is also a huge fav.  Fast, instense, and beautiful gfx.

RoboTron 2084   was one that I couldnt get into as a kid - too hard, and gfx seemed too primitive, yet now, its a my top favorite game.   Nothing gives you such an all out primal adrenalin rush as that game!

The first game I really remember being hooked on was Rip Off. It was the first vector game I had seen, and it was at the local Bar/Restaurant my parents went to every other week. Shame of it is, I never could play it well. But the losing was very cool. Huge vector starbursts that seemd bright enough to blind you.

My honorable mention would be Crazy Climber, stuck in a laundramat near my house. Probably played it every day for 3 months, and pretty regularly after that, till they got rid of it almost a year later. What college fund?  :P

in the mid/late 70's, i spent many friday/saturday nights at the local shaky's pizza with the family. i specifically remember playing games like sprint 2, stunt cycle, 2 player fire truck, but the game that got the most of my(parents)quarters was sea wolf. whenever i could find one, i continued to play that game all through the arcade days.

We didnt really have a dedicated arcade near us. The only chance I relly got to play on an arcade game was when I went to our local swimming pool as they usually had a couple upstairs on the viewing gallery. My favourites from there were probably Street Fighter 2 and Bucky O Hare. The one I probably spent the most money on though was at a holiday camp, called Caddilacs and Dinosaurs, the best scrolling beat-em-up ever IMHO, if you like this type of game and havent played it you have to give it a go!

Oh my goodness, where to start.  Like everyone else, my firsts were not my fav's because they came out with bigger, better, brighter... faster than you could turn around in the early 80's.  We had a TV Pong (you know, the one with 2 paddles on the same small console) so I never played that at the arcade.  My first was Space Invaders at the local c-store.  My all time fav was Galaga.  Some of the most frequented were Robotron, Defender, Stargate, Kangaroo, and Moon Patrol.

Man, the parental cash I stole and pumped into vid's.  What a bad kid I was.

Lord help me!

Lunar Landar - I was in a bowling league in grammar school and I think I looked forward to the small arcade at the bowling alley more than bowling.  Lunar Landar was different from any other game.  I also remember Atari football and how we would pound that thing.

The first game I remember absolutely loving is Golden Axe.  My brother had indoor soccer games every week, and I loved to go since I got to play this for 2 hours straight.  Man, the joy of a 9 year old winning his first arcade game is immeasurable.

First I don't know about, but thinking back, Robotron is the one.

Some time in the mid-ninetys some friends and I did a fairly extended road trip to visit a working Robotron machine at a truck stop in the middle of nowhere.

my first favorite was pheonix.  I played alot of games at the time, but I constantly went back to put more quarters in that one than any other.

Berzerk

there was something about the artwork that I thought was cool.  I still love this game and it is so simple.

My other favorite that I played later was

Blaster (or blaster master) or something like that

I played it once in another towns pizza joint and dreamt about it for years until finally

....MAME(tm) and I re-discovered it

Thank you MAMEdev!

First favorite?   Probably Donkey Kong when it first came out.

Donkey Kong for me too.  DK jr just didn't cut it.

I remember the first time I got to the "pie factory" level.  I thought I had really done something.

Later on, I got hooked on Dragons Lair.  Wow, people would gather all around and watch me play it.  It was like, for just a few seconds, I was cool.

Ahh, back to reality.  ;)

My father owned a video shop in the early 80's and had space invaders in a corner,it took fortunes with the local kids.I was a bit young at the time but remember being mesmerised by the screen.
My first fave was Pacland, controlling what was like a cartoon character at 8 was just surreal also loved Nemisis and track and field.

Ahhhh  them were the days!!

Tempest
Donkey Kong
Centipede

I remember playing centipede at the Straw Hat Pizza near my house.  I didn't have any quarters so I just spun the trackball as fast and hard as I could.  I thought I had done it so fast that it started to smoke!

Alas, I turned around and saw a guy with a cigarette in his mouth (source of said smoke) standing over my shoulder saying "You gonna play kid?"  I sheepishly walked away and ate my pizza.  :P

That's tough... I was very young. But a number of games stick out clearly in my memory, and I still enjoy all of these today.

Joust
Tempest
Galaga
Missile Command
Gyruss
Ms Pacman
Tailgunner (actually this sucks majorly without the arcade cockpit/controls)
Tron
Robotron
Track & Field (I would love to see an expanded version with more events, but keeping the exact same graphics/play... the game is such a blast while it lasts)
Crossbow
Millipede

Getting a bit later now...
Strikeforce (brilliant, one of my top ten favorites of all time, gets heavy play with me and my pal)
Galaga 88 (I used to play the TG16 version of this 'Galaga 90' constantly)
Cabal (one of the best 2-player games ever. Trackball games rule)
Strider (always loved the unique graphic style and killer soundtrack)
VS Excitebike
1943

Geeze, I'm way off topic from this thread now. ANd I haven't even gotten warmed up! Heh.

I remember receiving 10 dollars for my 9th birthday from my grandmother.  I immediately took it to the arcade...  and wasted ALL of it on Rush'n'Attack.  I don't think I got off the first level.

When I got home... boy was I in trouble.  "ALL THAT MONEY?  On video games?"     Imagine what they'd say now if they knew how much I was spending on the SAME video game today.  Sheesh.

The first video game that I got to play was at Round Table Pizza in Livermore, CA.  They had an Armor Attack that my dad let me play while waiting for our order.  Asteroids was the first game I had to own though.  Still love it after all these years.

I think I fell in Love with Ms Pacman.  when I got older I wasted PLENTY Of money on RoadBlasters and Spy Hunter.

No doubt though...having my dad watch me play Ms. Pacman and constantly saying "man in trouble" and then being all excited for me when I'd get out of the trouble.  It's one of those things where the praise I received from that game is probably why I still can't pass one up.  I'm just waiting for someone to come up and go ..man..you're good!

man I'm a loser.  :)

I was in a bowling league when I was a kid, too... My dad would give me a quarter when I was done bowling, and I'd always throw it into 1942.

To this day, that game is very near my all time fave, just because of the weeks and weeks of playing it at the bowling alley.

Eventually I was able to play for about 20 mins on the same quarter... Did that ever tick my dad off. :)

Other notables are APB, Star Wars, and Tron.

I also enjoyed fighters until they just got too crazy.  The original SF2, and the first couple of MKs were great.  Then it got to the point that you couldn't consider yourself remotely good at the new ones unless you memorized a million moves each consisting of an epilepsy-inducing series of button presses and joystick twirls.  Anyway, you catch my drift... :)

Space Invaders was the first video game I can ever remember playing. The bass thump, the relentless neverending rows of invaders, the ever diminishing shields. It will always hold a special place in my heart. I own an original Space Invaders machine and still to this day get a big charge out of playing it.

star wars was my first...

my favorites are track n field (obviously :P, I was the first guy out of my friends who passed the high jump event), karate champ vs., street fighter 2 (the original one only, didn't care much for the sequels), T2, the metal slug series (actually, I'm a big fan of most of the neogeo games), and ms pacman.

I can play anyone of those games for hours on end

Hmmm, that's tough one, I can remember playing a game called "Venture" a lot, but I think that was more of a lack of options at the mall it was in...I think Dig Dug, Galaga, and Ponpoko are some of my more favourite games, but I could never say what my first love was...I guess "Space Invaders", but again what other options were there?

My first passion was Crazy Climber.  I remember a contest the local gameroom had when I was 11ish.  1st prize was a CC t-shirt.  I tried & tried to get the high score that day but the college kids spanked me.  Man was I pissed!  I wanted that T so bad!

I still love playin CC on my cab now.  Big fun!  But I just wish I was wearin' that damn t-shirt!  Anyone seen a CC t-shirt around?

But then Robotron came out and all bets were off!  I've made my own Robotron t-shirt on my PC - stinkin' decal keeps peelin' off in the wash!  >:(

I never grew up playing the arcades, we lived in the bush and never really had the money to spend.  Still my first and favorite would have to be Bubble Bobble which i played on a friends IBM compatible 286.

It's funny to go through this forum and actually play the games listed, minds were entertained so easily back then...

Asteroids was the first game I got addicted to at the bowling alley. It also helped that we were able to rack up credits with the quarter on a thread trick. For my cab, I even bought an Asteroids coin door. Still have to see if I have that quarter stringing touch.

Battlezone had to be my very first favorite, followed closely by Phoenix...although if I really sit down and think about it, depending on my age, I probably could come up with a "first" favorite for every era..elementary school, jr. high, high school...etc.  :)

Great topic!

Like so many here, I played 'em all until I saw Defender.
That was where I found out this is serious business!!:)
I remember making my first million!
Then one day I saw a Stargate and was even more addicted!!!

I now own both as an adult and just looking at them brings sooo many memories!

Tough trying to remember the FIRST favorite.

Talking arcade games, my guess is that it was either Ms Pac-Man or 1942.

Both games that I recall spending lots of time playing in my youth, but heck if i can remember which of the 2 would have been first.

My first video game loves would have been Pitfall & Kaboom on the Atari 2600.

My first Favorite was Tempest.  I played a lot of Road Blasters too when it came out, so much so, I played it while I was on my honeymoon.  When my wife went to sleep each night, I would go down to the lobby in my robe and slippers and play for a while.  ::)

Heh,

I found a Gyruss in the hotel on the second night of my honeymoon. My wife was less than pleased.

First arcade love =  Phoenix cocktail. I put the very first credit on that machine.

No sense letting a thread like this die...

First game I remember getting addicted to is Arkanoid.  We were at a skate place or an arcade or something when I stumbled on this game.  I just sat and played that game for an hour.  Then ever time after that I'd just keep going.  Always wanted to see what the next cool level woudl look like.

We had a weird little convenience store a few blocks from my house called "Skankies" when I was younger.  They had a Bubble Bobble and a Return of the Jedi arcade in there.  Bubble Bobble was my favorite of the 2, but I still played my fair share of RotJ.

Nothing makes me wax nostagic like booting up my mame cab to Bubble Bobble and eating some sour patch kids and swedish fish (Skankies used to sell them for a penny each).

Skankies? Really?

My first favorite is Galaga followed closely by Mario Bros. These were games that I were actually good at and didn't just pump quarters into.

My first favorite Pinball game is Firepower. Awesome Pin. I remember how surprised I was when I saw Multi-ball.

I spent alot of time at my mom's pizza hut, and they had a nintendo vs. tent machine, so the games that hooked me were excitebike, Super Mario Bros, amd Mach Rider. Other than that, I was pretty much in total awe of ANY arcade game I came across that was new. It is funny, because I have these awesome memories of games like Robocop, and Superman, etc. but when I play them in MAME, I wonder what I was thinking.  ;D

This is a hard one.  I have found memories of playing Space Invaders, Asteroids, Galaxians, and Crazy Climber.  But I'd have to say my all time favorite game is Toobin.  I played the living hell out of that game while in college in between classes at the arcade next to campus (Fun Factory).  I used to play for at least 30 minutes and get into the 5 million range (can barely break 3 million now, DOH).  I always thought that game had the best music and most original gameplay.  It also has hands down the best marquee EVER (toobin marquee).  My only regret in life is not getting that contest t-shirt before the 1988 expiration.  :laugh2:

Battlezone was the first one I remember playing at the local pizza shop. I tried to make one out of cardboard but it just wasn't quite the same. I graduated on to Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and finally Dragon's Lair which I became pretty good at. I never beat the whole thing but being able to play for 10 minutes or so could usually get a good crowd going.
I've got a fever...

It has been like 18 months since dude started this poll...

Do I need to really even answer the question for you ALL to know the answer??
<<Hint<< ok

I was like 7 and I would beg my mom for quarters to go up to PARK ARCADE and play the sickest game out. Sometimes she would write me checks for like 50c or 75c to PARK ARCADE! (DAMN thats funny, poor ma) I think I was pretty good for being 7 years old. I remember big kids watching me play and saying how lucky I would be getting...Surely it WAS dumb luck most of the time. Barrels rolling just over head and not coming down the ladder...jumping fireballs succesfully. Next thing I know the game is gone...I probably only played the game a few dozen times and never seen it again for another 20 years...However, I believe Super Pacman came around that time or shortly therafter to PARK ARCADE. They would give 4 quarters eveyday to the high score from the previous day for EVERY machine. I usually mopped up on Super Pacman for my freebie quarters unless some teenager had no pity, would see my high chicken scratched onto the taped up piece of paper on the marquee and proceed to demolish my score while I was home sleeping.

Fast forward to about 3 months ago...Never thought that these games would be a part of my life ever again except for the FOND memories and modern day spin-offs...and along CAME MAME!! Now I'am friggin' swimming in classic arcade bliss and loving every minute of it! It is almost the same as it was back then...Thank you MAME creators. I owe you BIG!!

Double dragon fits that for me.  I still play a bit cause I remember loving it, but it really is one of the more repetative and boring games out there.

Thats the thing... it brings you back to a time when things were more simple for you. Sometimes I feel kind of silly explaining to the "normies" (a.k.a. people who aren't in the arcade scene) my hobby, and to escape my embarassment I quickly play some Ms. Pacman.

I agree, there are quite a few games I remember with fondness from my childhood, but when I re-play them now, don't remember why I liked them, but there are some classics that really hold up (like bubble bobble!)

Yeah, it's real name was Skankies (that wasn't a nickname, but if it were, it would have fit).

It's been gone for a long time now, it's an apartment complex now, but every time I pass by I get a hankering for some penny candy, bubble bobble, and some of that stale gum from Garbage Pail Kids.

Skankies? Really?

I suggest you purchase a pack of first series on e-bay for 30 bucks and tell us if the gum still tastes the same.  I bet it does.

Hmm. . . I think the very first game I ever "needed" to play when I was little was "Invaders from Outerspace"

http://www.arcade-classics.com/gameroom_pix/invaders/

That and "Sea Devil"

http://www.marvin3m.com/arcade/sseadev.htm

Both electromechanical games.  :)

SPACE INVADERS just happened to be the first video I had ever saw when I was seven. :applaud:
They treated me like an animal and that's what I became.

My FIRST favorites were the electro-mechanical shooting games.
The two I remember most were one with all different animals on it, and another that was set in a graveyard.

Played lots of others before this one, but my first true love was Gyruss, played on a cocktail at a pizza place.  I was the only guy around that could make it to Earth regularly.   Really had to be in the zone for that one.

Twenty years later and I can't even make it to Mars.    But I'm still tryin', thanks to MAME.

                                                                  Any Pinball Machine

I love playing pinball, any pinball. I can have as much fun playing a 50s model as a brand new machine.
Arcades were full of pinballs when I was a kid, now your lucky to find one. But the screen machines slowly took over. I didn't care to spend my money on the first ones because the tended to be the same ones I played on my Atari, the favorite at my house was Dragster.

My first favorite video arcade machine was

                                                                  Star Castle

It was at the pool hall I hung out at when I was a kid. I got to the point where I  put a quarter in and played until I got tired and either let someone else take over or just abandon the game.  I haven't seen or played on since  :'(.

The first one Omega Race, but there were others I loved to play:  Missile Command, Juno First, Moon Patrol, Galaga, Scramble, Pole Position, Rampart.  I've seen Pong at a local coffee shop as a kid and that was really something, followed by Space Invaders at a local beer joint  :o.

The ones that I was really good at were Omega Race and Rampart, man there was noone who could beat me on these then.  I played Rampart at my University and there were many challengers, including some Taiwanese students, but I was unbeatable.  Good ole days.
