Mame and Arcade Monitor Old PC.
« on: July 20, 2005, 05:29:00 pm »
I have a 200 mhz pc with 1 PCI slot and 2 ISA slots 96mb ram. I have a 19" arcade monitor currently running on this same PC with Vantage. I want to swtich to mame 0.36 running all the classics. (or as many as i can). My question is what cheapy video card woudl work best for this? currently am using an old trident card. I think i woudl probably need to be using Advancemame but i cannot find an 0.36 version so i can actually run some of these classics without slowing down. I am very happy with how Vantage runs currently but not saving high scores and the game list is short. Any suggestions comments?  I am aware of the ease of use using an ArcadeVGA card i do not have an AGP port and could not find the old PCI version anywhere.

I did find the archived versions of Advancemame on sourceforge. So i now have advancemame 0.55. So i think i might be all set unless someone has any better solutions. Will advancemame 0.55 run the classics on a 200 mhz pc? I would think it should be fine but i have not had time to try it out yet. Also what is my best bet for an old video card i hear the ATI Rage 128? Thanks All!

Well you'll be running dos mame obviously and lucky you, you are using an old rage 128 card.

You don't need advance mame at all.   Since adv mame is such a pain in the butt to setup, I would suggest skipping it all-together.

You can use any dos fe that supports arcade resolutions and any old version of dos mame (considering how crappy the pc is, the older the better).  For mame, sending the -monitor arcade switch should do it.  For the fe, you'll have to consult it's individual docs.

OK thats great news. Advancemame does look like its going to be a chore. Next question a bit OT but.... I am using clrMamePro and trying to rolllback my .95 romset to .55 or .36, i do get the romset rebuilt using the .36 dat file and for .55 dat file but both versions i rolled back have missing roms. Where can i get a fixdat file for .55 and .36 from .95 Romset?

I'd like to piggyback on this thread:

1.  How do I rollback my roms to a really old romset, like .69 or .37?  I need a dat file from then, right?
2.  What was the last dos version of mame?  Where can I find it?  (mame.net goes back to .69 only)

Specifically, galaga is not working with my .69 dmame and mame sets, but of course it's from the .101 romset.  I have a .89 set but don't know if there's a dos mame version from then I could use.  help! --Erich

PS see, sometimes we do use the search function!

You can use ClrMame to roll back your sets.  You'll have to find 'missing' roms on your own.

Read the documentation on creating your own dat files.
